I really fucking love books

I do. They are the one constant in my life, they've never let me down. It doesn't matter what happens during the day, 7.30pm, DC in bed,out comes the pile (or the Kindle).

I don't have money for holidays - doesn't matter because after 7.30 I can travel to any country I like, and some that don't even exist. When there's no happy endings in real life, open a book and you're swimming in them.

I love them. They're the best things ever. My life would be a barren, lonely wasteland without them. Books have given me so much. Wonderful, clever people out there have written them just to enrich my life, to give me pleasure, or knowledge, to help me relax, mostly for free as their book costs me nothing from the library (or £2.81 from Amazon at the most)

Fabulous bloody things.

I love books too - I shipped hundreds to NZ 14 years ago, shipped them back to UK three years ago and now they are just about to land again in NZ. I also love my Kindle, perfect for reading fat books in bed and for travelling, but nothing beats the bookshelves full to overflowing Grin

bigkidsdidit · 29/04/2017 21:00

Cockadoodle it took me about three years after my youngest was born to get back into reading. My brain was just too scattered before that. It will come back!

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2017 21:01

'Would The Woman in White be any good? He might find it a bit stodgy and Victorian....I loved it but I'm a boring fucker. They're doing a film of it at the minute!'

👍

I did not know this. One of my favourite books! About time they made a decent screen adaptation of it.

FreeNiki · 29/04/2017 21:04

Meh. I used to be a reader.

Now I'd rather experience something myself and go somewhere myself rather than read what someone else thinks.

You havent been all these places. You really havent.

WeeWillyWinkieFromEccles · 29/04/2017 21:04

I love reading, I always have. I often feel like I need three heads and three pairs of arms, so I can crochet and knit and read every evening at the same time.
My daughter has just started school and I am loving seeing her learn to read. It's fascinating. She is loving it too, which makes me all fuzzy inside. I want her to love books as much as I do.
I have been neglecting my books recently as I've got a few important crochet projects I'm trying to get finished to a deadline, but this thread has actually inspired me to try to make sure I head off to bed half an hour earlier than I have been doing to read a few pages of my current book.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/04/2017 21:06

Couldn't face an English degree after A level despite being book worm although it would be nice to have one now so I could apply for English teacher secondary jobs.

DS has liked the A level poetry and plays thus far, just not the novels. Hence the ask for suggestions...

PepeLePew · 29/04/2017 21:09

OCSock he might like Patrick Hamilton. Vastly under-rated British writer.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/04/2017 21:11

No Niki, I haven't and being a romantic, I am not sure that I don't want to retain my illusions! Obfuscating, in the extreme....

OCSockOrphanage · 29/04/2017 21:13

Thank you Pepe. Will propose it. Why is it suitable? I don't know the author at all, which is not to dismiss his work.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2017 21:13

I love Hamilton Pepe. Hangover Square is one of the best British books of the 20th century.

Witchend · 29/04/2017 21:18

We're all readers in this house. Currently:
Dh is reading a computer magazine.
Dd1 is reading a fan fiction site on her kindle.
Dd2 is re-reading I think a Chalet School, but it might be a Gwendoline Courtney.
Ds (whose light should have been out half an hour ago and I'm ignoring) is reading a Cherub book. he'll probably be asleep on it shortly though.
I've got a new (to me) Violet Needham which I'm looking forward to reading tonight when I go up.

I've collected children's books for years and the bookshelves show that.

We have over 6000 books. We don't have enough bookshelves. Sad

Runny · 29/04/2017 21:21

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed that Kindle books are suddenly really expensive. Especially the newer titles. I wonder why that is?

The third book in a series I love is coming out on Wednesday and Ive pre ordered it so it will automatically download onto my kindle. I can't wait.

bigkidsdidit · 29/04/2017 21:22

I hope my DC continue to love reading as they grow up. It seems random to me. I know many avid readers whose children don't ever pick up books.

Somerville · 29/04/2017 21:26

Ah, me too OP. Reading is the best. I wouldn't say reading replaces travel for me, but I do sometimes spend a lot of time and money getting somewhere, then spend a lot of the time there reading. Grin

SanFranBear · 29/04/2017 21:36

All Kindle owners should absolutely subscribe to BookBub. It's a free email service which sends you cheap and free books in whichever genres or authors take your fancy. I have to delete them at the moment as my Kindle is about to explode but it is fucking awesome!

I am also incredibly Envy for all those with their own libraries. I have boxes and boxes of books in my loft, waiting for that day. The thought of unpacking them and seeing the treasures I've forgotten were there makes me so excited.

Books are honestly the best thing ever. Fact!

Heidi82 · 29/04/2017 21:37

I absolutely love a good book

AngryPrincess · 29/04/2017 21:44

It's so good when you go in the charity shop, and find a book you have on your wish List!

welshgirlwannabe · 29/04/2017 21:48

Me too. Books fill something in my life that nothing else does. The best thing that I have is my kobo plus a subscription to my library which gives me access to tens of thousands of e books. On a Sunday night I can browse through all of these books and load up my ereader without having to spend money or leave my house. It's a joy Smile

confuzzled42 · 29/04/2017 21:52

One of the most joyous, peaceful aspects of my parenting occurred tonight when both DC (6 and 8) said "can we all sit down and read our own books in the living room?" Yes, yes we can. Reading, surrounded by the people you love, what's not to like?

magimedi · 29/04/2017 22:06

I love books. I love reading.

I am lucky to be old & retired & have a lot of time to read.

I usually have a couple of books on the go at once - one that demands an hour or so of solid reading & one that I can pick up & put down whenever I want - works for bedtime reading.

I have a kindle that I love for going away but my deepest joy is:

THE LIBRARY

I urge all of you readers to join & use your local library.

I currently have 12 books out, I can have them for 3 weeks, renew them on line & if I hear about a book I want to read I can reserve it for the grand sum of 60p - SIXTY PENCE!! Amazing.

Please use your library - if you don't they will vanish & that would be very sad.

Passmethecrisps · 29/04/2017 22:16

Oh confuzzled that is something i dream of!

I have rediscovered reading after a major lull after the birth of dd1. It took me 4 years to get my reading mojo back and am now expecting dd2 so I really hope it doesn't take as long second time around.

I joined the 50 book challenge on here and it has been a revelation. So many fantastic recommendations, updates on the deals and some brilliant debates.

My mum was a voracious reader when I was growing up and it had a huge influence on me. I genuinely believe that it gives so many benefits that it gives me huge joy and not a little relief that dd is very into books as well. Her discovery of chapter books recently has been fab and sharing stories like Fantastic Mr Fox is wonderful.

I learned recently that libraries no longer charge for overdue children's books. I think this is wonderful as I vividly remember not being able to use the library as the worry of fines being too great. We lived in the country and a trip into town wasn't always easy. One forgotten date led to a week or two worth of fines

AlwaysTheWinner · 29/04/2017 22:18

I have found my people! I love books (in all forms, it doesn't make any difference to me whether I read from a page or a screen, I just enjoy the story) and reading and especially libraries. My library is brilliant and it saves me a fortune.
For all the YA lovers, I'd recommend The Hate U Give.
And now I'm off to bed with the new book I bought today. Happy reading everyone!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/04/2017 22:42

Thanks for the recommendations!

Who said Americanah? Loved that one

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/04/2017 22:45

I second the plea to support your local library. Although I buy a lot of books, I borrow just as many and my kids are encouraged to borrow from library first and foremost. We have lost too many libraries already Sad

MusicToMyEars800 · 29/04/2017 22:48

me too, absolutely nothing better than getting comfy with a really good book!
