Ahd how ridiculously excited am I? Here on Amazon, but I just happened to spot it in my local independent bookshop and grabbed it. DD said 'Can I start reading it' and I've had to tell her no, that I want to read it first.

Thank you I loved it.

JackieNo · 10/03/2007 15:48

Me too[grin} (as if you couldn't tell that from the OP)

why does sarah greene pop into my head?
I'm hoping it was something to do with a televised version?

shonaspurtle · 10/03/2007 15:58

Sarah Greene pops into your head because she was in the televised version...and that's how they introduced her when she became a BP presenter.

(she popped into my head when I saw this thread title - begone woman!)

theheadgirl · 10/03/2007 16:00

Ooh yes I remember SG being on this, and then being introduced as a blue peter presenter - ahh the days of Simon Groome and Peter Duncan! I used to love BP although the cooler kids were into Magpie.

Oh, lovely news! I think this is one to buy for dd and put aside (she's only 3 )
Thanks JackieNo

KTeePee · 10/03/2007 16:06

I've never heard of this book before but I think my DD would love it!

franch · 10/03/2007 16:10

Oh my goodness I am an actress because of that book ... Think I still have my original copy though!

Batters, you and dd are in for a scrumptious retro treat!

JackieNo · 10/03/2007 16:13

It actually now has a bit of a guide for modern readers in the front, explaining about pre-decimalisation currency, what the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate were, and what prep and 'order marks' were.

Oh, that's shaming some of us are living history then!

Tamum · 10/03/2007 16:31

Oh fab I bought a copy from Abebooks so I could read it to dd and ds. They were not as enthralled as I'd hoped but I think I'll try dd with it again now she's a bit older. When we've finished A Little Princess, which is even better than I remembered....

JackieNo · 10/03/2007 16:57

I'm only on page 52, and I want to go and do a play now.

franch · 11/03/2007 11:28

DD1 is 3 .... how long till I can read it to her then ..... ???

Lilymaid · 11/03/2007 11:35

I loved A Swish of the Curtain when I was about 10. Wasn't there another book in the series? There was a programme on Radio 4 recently about Pamela Brown and the books. I think modern children will love the idea of doing something for themselves without parental involvement!

Tamum · 11/03/2007 13:13

I think the next one was called The Blue Door, or something? Hang on will go and look.... I also think there were another couple, possibly one mainly about Maddy?

Tamum · 11/03/2007 13:16

Here we are . These are the four, I think:
1941 The Swish of the Curtain
1945 Maddy Alone
1947 Golden Pavements
1949 Blue Door Venture

Actually, the Golden Pavements one is coming back to me. Wasn't it about Lyn going to RADA?

MadamePlatypus · 11/03/2007 13:18

Didn't one of them have to do a backward flick-flack or something of the back of a caravan? can anybody remember what it was?

FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2007 13:20

I run my groups in the hall which the author used to put on her amateur dramatics as a girl, so, in a way, the original Blue Door Theatre

They are repainting the door blue to tie in with the recent reissue of the book

Tamum · 11/03/2007 13:21
FrannyandZooey · 11/03/2007 13:26

My hall is nothing like the Blue Door hall in the books but it is a nice link to have

I haven't had anyone to show off to about this before, I don't know anyone else who has read the books!

CODalmighty · 11/03/2007 13:27
