Funny laugh out loud books?

I'm in the process of splitting up with my partner and really need some funny books to make me laugh right now? Any suggestions for books that will make me weep with laughter? Fiction or non fiction fine.

THINGS MY FATHER SAID is very funny. I'm re-reading it for the third time and it never fails to make me laugh. It started life on Twitter - this guy telling people all the funny things his dad said as he grew up. Sequel equally funny. Hope things get better for you.

Getting Over It by Anna Maxted is a wonderful novel about love and loss which never fails to make me oink with unladylike laughter.

Also Animal Husbandry by Laura Zigman. Fab.

Both these sound like 'chick lit' but are far more.

I remember snorting with laughter at My Life on a Plate years ago by India Knight. It looked like total chick lit on the cover but was brilliant

Oh my goodness, I LOVED that book. I really miss India Knight's earlier writing, I've found the more recent releases a bit mean spirited and smug for my taste.

Lucky Jim is hilarious. I agree about Bill Bryson.

There was a jolly good film made of Animal Husbandry, with Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd. Recently enjoyed 'Love, Nina' by Nina Stibbs - letters home to her sister when she was a young Nanny. Very funny. Agree with others about Bill Bryson. Hope things look up for you soon OP & you find some books you love!

I really like audiobooks and have the entire series of cabin pressure on my audible app I can really recommend that!!

Things My Dad Says or whatever it is called is hilarious. A good present for blokes too - my DH cackled like a fishwife reading it.

I wholeheartedly recommend Steve Toltz and his debut 'A Fraction of the Whole'. It's insanely funny - the writing style, the ideas, the energy. Am pressed for time, so here's a review I've just cut and paste from Amazon by one reader:

I bought this on a whim (in fact I barely looked beyond the front cover) and wasn't particularly looking forward to reading it. I was UTTERLY wrong. This is probably the best book I've ever read. In fact take all the books I've ever read, add them all together and it probably just about matches how good this book is! One of the reviews says that "It gives off the unmistakeable whiff of a book that might just contain the secret of life.". I agree with this whole heartedly. Such is the authors expertise at observing the vagueries of human existence, the pointlessness of many of the things we try to achieve and just how funny it all is, that I was completely enthralled.
I cannot lend this to any friends becasue I'll probably want to read it again very soon and stop and think properly about some of the philosphical aspects.
It's a bit of a tome - some 700 pages - but I could have easily read more. It was hilarious in many parts and really laugh out loud stuff! Very original, fantastic and immense plot, funny and life enhancing - what more can we ask for?

Dom Joly's travel books; Dark Tourist and Scary monsters and Super Creeps are hilarious. I feel out of bed I was laughing so hard. Also love Caitlin Moran and Bill Bryson. Hope things pick up for you op.

Off the top of my head, I found Screen Burn by Charlie Brooker so funny I actually snorted with laughter at times. The were a good few passages in Expecting the Unexpected which made me howl as well.

I'd have to say the funniest book I've ever read though is Bill Bryson's Notes From a Small Island. It may be a little dated now, but it still makes me laugh like a drain the whole way through. Absolutely brilliant.

Reading 'Stalin ate my homework' at the mo by Alexei Sayle. It's brilliant!

Agree with VanillaLatteAndCake, Tina Fey's "Bossypants" is great. Anyone who likes Moran will love it. Amy Poehler's book "Yes Please" is similarly funny and empowering.

One of the best books I've read about dealing with a break-up though is Viv Albertine's memoir Clothes Clothes Clothes Music Music Music Boys Boys Boys. Absolutely brilliant writing and such an interesting woman.

@londonskylar thank you! Not on a funny tip but also read Kim Gordon's (sonic youth) autobiography about her split with Thurston Moore. It was helpful.

I forgot about the Molesworth books, they are hilarious. I haven't any books to swap I'm afraid! Only kindle books or ancient, battered favourites.

The tent the bucket and me by Emma Kennedy had me sniggering so much as I read it in bed that I woke DH up. And then when I was trying to explain a funny scene I was wheezing so much with laughter that I couldn't get any words out. Yes, it loses momentum a bit at the end but the laughs earlier on more than make up for it.

Another wildly funny book that I recommend to everyone is Confessions of a failed southern lady by Florence King. The author recounts growing up in the American South with very unconventional parents and a cast of outrageous relatives, all mixed with feminism and sex.

Pratchett. If you've read them, read them again. They will give you back your belief in the goodness of humanity.

Barbara Pym's novels. As a bonus, they are shortish and easy to carry around - you can snigger on the bus!
