She is new to me but I bought 'The Girls' because it was offer for Kindle, and I'm quite hooked. (don't tell me the ending as I haven;t finished it yet !)

Which one of hers should I try next ?

And are there any similar authors I might like (I like Alex Marwood and have recently read The Darkest secret which I would say is a similar type of book) - mystery/hidden secrets, plot twists and turns etc.

Thank you all for more recommendations. Smile

I had a trip to the library today (small library so not a huge choice) and picked up 'About Last Night' by Adele Parks, 'The Making of Us' by Lisa Jewell and another book called 'Black Rabbit Hall' by Eve Chase which sounds like the same type of genre and has a recommendation by Lisa Jewell on the blurb.

I'm adding all the authors mentioned to my list to look out for.

I've just started reading it and I'm hooked. I read a lisa Jewel book on holiday last year and really liked it.

Thanks for the recommendation.

OnHold · 11/02/2017 19:01

The one I read was Vince and Joy.

BikeRunSki · 11/02/2017 19:16

Whenever I pick up a Lisa Jewell book I am surprised how much I enjoy it! I also downloaded The Girls a few days ago. I really enjoyed I Found You.

BikeRunSki · 11/02/2017 19:18

Lisa Jewell fans might also enjoy Jane Fallon.

formerbabe · 11/02/2017 19:21

I loved The House We Grew Up In and The Third Wife...I wasn't so keen on The Girls though.

Saucery · 11/02/2017 19:22

I loved Black Rabbit Hall. Quite sad in places though.

PanannyPanoo · 11/02/2017 19:29

you might like Dorothy Koomson or Freya North.

everythingsgoingsouth · 11/02/2017 19:36

I like most of above mentioned authors, so I'll recommend Danni Atkins to you all- especially her first- "fractured ". in fact, think I'll read it again- which I hardly ever do.

Clawdy · 11/02/2017 22:24

I loved Black Rabbit Hall, well written and poignant.

Papergirl1968 · 12/02/2017 12:14

Emily Barr is good too.

PabloFanquesFair · 12/02/2017 13:33

My favourite Lisa Jewell book is One Hit Wonder, about a girl trying to find out about the life of her ex pop star sister in London after her death. I loved it.

jcscot · 12/02/2017 22:10

Avoid Amanda Prowse! Her book "Poppy Day" was the most unrealistic, over-hyped, poorly-edited book I've ever wasted money on.

Utter shite (and she appears to have written a series of books based on that one).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/02/2017 22:18

My favourite Lisa Jewell is 'vince and joy'. I like all of hers really, they are well written and not all about cupcakes and affairs which most chick lit seems to be.

Have you tried Dorothy koomson? Her earlier ones are more 'chick lit' ish, but again not too girly, more like women's issues. Good night beautiful is the saddest book I have ever read. The ice cream girls was made into a tv series but the book is better. Her later stuff is quite gritty, but still easy to read, like 'the girl he loved before'- they have a sort of crime/mystery edge. I really love her books, excellently written.

Fell in love with Lisa's books when I arrived in London 17 yeras ago. My friend lived in Clapham where Ralphs Party was set and she recommended it. Another friend at the same time told me about Jane Green who I also love dearly now and was originally from West Hampstead right near me. More recently I fell on love with Dorothy Koomson who is great at tear jerkers but has branched out to the darker stuff on her last few. Lastly try Cecelia Ahern.....she brilliant and magical :)

Kindlethefourth · 13/02/2017 18:36

Liane Moriarty for sure.

purpleme12 · 25/02/2017 20:17

Lisa Jewell is one of my favourite authors 😊

Matilda2013 · 25/02/2017 20:50

I just recently read The Girls and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Frouby · 25/02/2017 21:00

I love Lisa Jewel and Adele Parks. Especially the early stuff by Adele Parks. Some of the characters appear again in later Parks books so read them in order.

I also love Jane Greens early stuff. Mr Maybe and Jemima J and Babyville were probably 3 of my all time favourite books at one point. However I found some of the later stuff a bit rubbish and too cliched. The stuff based in America gets progressively boring and I couldn't finish the last one.

Freya North is very similar to LJ stuff. Clever chiclit with fantastic writing. North writes beautifully IMO. Very vivid descriptions and all her characters have a likeability about them that has you wanting everything to be ok.

I enjoy a bit of Jojo Moyes when I am in the mood. But Jewel and North both write better 'stories' I think.

crapfatbanana · 25/02/2017 21:09

I've never read Lisa Jewell but heard The Girls being discussed on A Good Read on Radio 4. It really appealed to me.

I am also a big fan of Adele Parks so will certainly try Lisa Jewell now.

hookiewookie29 · 25/02/2017 22:42

I've read all of Lisa Jewells books, but I think her earlier books are better than her last 3. Was really disappointed with The Third Wife, and, although The Girls is good, her other books are better.

spidey66 · 27/02/2017 15:56

Another LJ fan here, never read one I didn't like.

MaQueen · 10/03/2017 19:06

I went through a stage of being hooked on chic-lit a few years ago, and Lisa Jewel was one of my favourites. Her books seem to have slightly more substance than the typical pretty but ditsy heroine moves to the country to follow her dream of running her own cake shop, and ends up falling for local wholesome, but still very hunky vet who has a cute dog.

I also enjoyed Jane Green's books, but eventually they all became very, very samey and saccharine and it felt like I was overdosing on candy floss when I read them.

But, my all time favourite good chic lit author is Lolly Winston. She has only written 3 books so far, but they're sooooooooooo excellent. My favourite is 'Sophie's Bakery For The Broken Hearted' which is a lot deeper, and richer than the title suggests (but yes, she does bake a few cakes, I confess).

purpleme12 · 11/03/2017 08:35

I thought Jane Green was standard chic lit really. Happy to read it , good but nothing special.

But i don't think Lisa Jewell is standard chic lit at all. Think she's one of the best authors.

Not heard of Lolly Winston that's interesting.

Dorothy Koomson - I love her! Re- reading goodnight beautiful at the moment
