Can anyone recommend me some really funny books?

I was thinking today that it has been a while since I read anything that really made me laugh.

I love PG Wodehouse and also find some Bill Bryson books very funny.

Diary of a Nobody is probably one of my favourite funny books. I also love Evelyn Waugh Decline and Fall and Vile Bodies.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Thanks

The tent, the bucket and me - Emma Kennedy

GlumsTheWord · 23/12/2016 21:25

Starter for Ten by David Nicholls.

MissWillaCather · 23/12/2016 21:32

The Trials of Tiffany Trott by Isabel Wolfe

Falalalafffffffttt · 23/12/2016 21:34

Yes man by Danny Wallace. The movie is dire, the book is side splitting

Jojobythesea · 23/12/2016 21:43

Fat chance by Nick Spalding. And any others by him. Grin

JingleBellies · 23/12/2016 21:47

YYY to James Herriot, Adrian Mole and Blott on the landscape!

A confederacy of dunces is the funniest, weirdest book I've ever read. Properly laugh out loud. Everybody I've recommended it to starts out wondering why I've suggested such a strange book but all are converted by the repulsive anti hero Ignatious by the end.

You're welcome! Wink

More Evelyn Waugh? I particularly like The Sword of Honour Trilogy and Put Out More Flags.

If you like Diary of a Nobody, try 'Augustus Carp, Esq., By Himself: Being the Autobiography of a Really Good Man'. Long time since I read it but lovely send up of pomposity.

Confusednotcom · 06/01/2017 23:42

I'll get back to you ... (blatantly following thread)

Confusednotcom · 06/01/2017 23:45

Oooh got one! I capture the castle by dodie smith, a funny feisty heroine and also a really good read.

WrongTrouser · 06/01/2017 23:46

If you like history - 1066 and all that Smile

Harvestwidow · 06/01/2017 23:48

Stephen Fry the hippopotamus or anything by Ben Elton

JRoo · 06/01/2017 23:52

What a Carve Up! By Jonathan Coe - so brilliant

FinnegansCake · 06/01/2017 23:54

The Wrong Boy by Willy Russell - it had me laughing out loud.

Thegiantofillinois · 06/01/2017 23:57

English passengers- dark in places, but also funny.

Good omens

EstelleRoberts · 07/01/2017 00:02

'Therapy' by David Lodge is both laugh-out-loud funny, and poignantly moving.

MistyMeena · 07/01/2017 00:15

Yes to lots of these, The Wrong Boy, Clive James, Bill Bryson particularly

Also Michael Carson and all the Adrian Mole books.

RedastheRose · 07/01/2017 00:25

If you like fantasy fiction anything by Terry Prachett, they always have lol moments in them.

Also agree that Stephen Fry's books are very funny but don't read if you are easily shocked.

Frankie Boyle - again not for the faint hearted.

And Ben Elton too.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/01/2017 00:26

Not to mention Terry Pratchett...if you dont like the discworld, try Good Omens. (I need to read more Neil Gaiman too)

Re Stephen fry, I liked Making History but another of his, The stars tennis balls, turned out to be the book I have most disliked ever and binned.

The funniest thing I ever read was a chapter in the book Innishowen by Joseph O'Connor. It was the description of a character pretending to be Bill Clinton communicating with air traffic control in Ireland to try and land his plane illegally. I was literally weeping with laughter. I gave it to DH to read as obviously he was intrigued to find out what had made me laugh so much but he was left cold. I've never found anyone else who's read the book to see if it was just me.

bruffin · 07/01/2017 13:25

Derec Longden. His autobiographies are funny and sad.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 07/01/2017 13:33

Molesworth.

Any fule should kno that.

RedastheRose · 07/01/2017 13:38

Oh yes I forgot to add Jasper Fforde....

Big second vote for '1066 and all that' - I love that book so much and have based a disturbing amount of my historical knowledge on it. Just finished re-reading The Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett, marvellous. All my books are packed in storage so can't do a scan and remind myself of any more favourites Sad.
