A year of no book buying. Anyone care to join me?

I've had a dummy run, starting at the beginning of the school year in September, just so it didn't seem too daunting! But so far I'm embracing it. I buy a lot of books generally and just thought we'd got so many in the house. I do read the vast majority of what I buy, but I do have books I haven't read, and my husband and teenage kids have some great books I would love to read.
So over the past 3 months I have definitely decreased my bedside pile. I am currently reading A Christmas Carol which dh reads every December but I never have. It's quite a joy to browse our book cases and spot things I haven't read and think this is the year I'll get round to it! Or to reread old favourites.
And I've just been made redundant so tightening the book buying belt is even more important.

Anyone fancy giving it a go?

echt do kindle books cost a fortune there too? I can't imagine books costing so much! Must be a nightmare!

Parisbanana · 16/01/2017 18:44

Now on number 3 from the tbr pile, and no new books have entered the house!
Am now reading The Versions of Us. Not grabbed me yet, I'm finding the sliding doors thing a bit confusing, but that may be because I've been tired when I've read it. Will see how it progresses.

I'm on number 3 as well. I read the Graham Norton book and Humboldt's Gift. I'm reading On Beauty by Zadie Smith at the moment. I read The Versions of Us last year, Parisbana, and I know what you mean. It's pleasant and well-written but not very compelling.

Parisbanana · 16/01/2017 20:13

mmack I'll finish it I reckon. I generally do unless the book is very long and far too dull or confusing to waste my time on! I need to spend a little while reading it when I'm not tired to get going properly.

Finished book four of the year Girls on Fire - Robin Wasserman. Was quite interesting although I didn't like the ending. I wanted more of a twist!

No books bought so far and now onto book 5 The Heat of Betrayal - Douglas Kennedy which is a library book so hoping to get my last two library books out the way and returned so I can concentrate on the books I own!

bootygirl · 18/01/2017 08:15

This is really showing me what a habit buying books without thinking has become.
I ve only read one book from my pile but I am reading 3 more at once!

anonymice · 18/01/2017 08:19

It is a habit isn't it ! An expensive one....
Have nearly finished book number two.

CiderwithBuda · 18/01/2017 15:03

I bought a book today. In my defence it was not for me! DS is 15 and a reluctant reader but read a book - Orphan X - over new year that he really liked and the second was out this week. He texted me this morning to ask me to get for him and as I'm always wanting him to read more I couldn't say no. However I resisted buying anything else!

Matilda2013 · 18/01/2017 15:57

I don't think that counts cider. I'm also terrible for buying people books they mention as I just love to try encourage a love of reading Blush. However books for dsd are included in my ban as she has way too many to be read already also Grin

5. The Heat of Betrayal - Douglas Kennedy

Recommended by a colleague and picked up at the library as it wasn't something I'd normally buy myself. Robin and her artistic impulsive husband visit Morocco with her hoping to have a baby and him working in new art. When he goes missing she is, as always, prime suspect. This follows her journey through the twists and turns of being a suspect whilst also discovering a foreign country and culture.

Very good read that I'm glad I was encouraged to read.

And still no books bought this year grin

Nearly bought a book today. I had to make myself put it back on the shelf. I have nearly finished my third book from the pile. Am sure I have saved some money already. Its quite difficult to resist temptation !

Parisbanana · 21/01/2017 18:44

Well done matilda2013 and anonymice
I still haven't succumbed to any purchases. That said, have purposely avoided that bit of my town (it is very slightly away from the main shopping bit so I don't find myself wandering in without meaning to)
I am still getting lots of bookish emails though, which I read, note down any interesting sounding books, and move on!
I am really enjoying looking at our many bookshelves and cases, I mean really looking. Picking books up, reading the blurb, sometimes knowing I've read them but having not a bit of recognition Grin
Have been a bit slower over the past few days and am still on number 3.

Still no purchases. I am very proud of myself - three whole weeks, what an achievement😀

Matilda2013 · 21/01/2017 20:47

Three weeks.. wonder if we will survive the other 49!

Parisbanana · 21/01/2017 22:16

I think the summer might be trickier, especially if we have a lazy holiday. I love bookbuying for holidays....
But just think, come Christmas when we're repeatedly asked what we'd like, we'll have a long list of books to ask for, or a book token or 2 Smile

OP posts:
Matilda2013 · 21/01/2017 22:43

Yeah I think it will be harder too if any favourite authors bring out books! But you're right Christmas will be sorted Grin

bootygirl · 22/01/2017 13:43

I just spent €6:30 magazine. I think its transference 😳 I really want an audible subscription 😳😔😳

I should nt should I? My library does nt really have any audio books.

Izzy24 · 22/01/2017 23:05

Well I've read three books from the tbr list but there's a book I've heard about that I really want.

It's Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.

Someone tell me it's not as epic as I think it would be?

(Almost clicked without remembering that I'm not buying.)

bootygirl · 23/01/2017 08:20

Can you preorder in your library izzy? You know some let you order a couple of books per member?.

I ve read 3 of my TBR.

Izzy24 · 23/01/2017 08:57

Yes I could - may even be there already.

But I'm really trying to get through all my TBRs! On my fourth now ...

bootygirl · 24/01/2017 08:29

Oh no I twitched & clicked. €2 on ebook. 😔 Back on the no buying again. I guess. If I get to the end with only a few € spent & less of a TBR it ll still be a win.

If I can still stay? 🤔

Izzy24 · 24/01/2017 08:43

Well I live in a glass house so.......

Matilda2013 · 24/01/2017 09:38

I'm actually surprised I've lasted this long. Did enter the book giveaway this month though... really shouldn't have with all the TBR books!

anonymice · 24/01/2017 11:03

i have nearly finished my fourth book. I depressed myself though looking at all the books a good colleague of mine gave me when she retired last year. They are all academic books. I was wondering if I should spend 2018 reading all of those....I think I nearly drove myself over the edge. The prospect is just too depressing Smile

bootygirl · 24/01/2017 11:24

I know my down fall is that I read & watch book reviews and that's the slippery slope for me.
