What we're reading

A year of no book buying. Anyone care to join me?

I've had a dummy run, starting at the beginning of the school year in September, just so it didn't seem too daunting! But so far I'm embracing it. I buy a lot of books generally and just thought we'd got so many in the house. I do read the vast majority of what I buy, but I do have books I haven't read, and my husband and teenage kids have some great books I would love to read.
So over the past 3 months I have definitely decreased my bedside pile. I am currently reading A Christmas Carol which dh reads every December but I never have. It's quite a joy to browse our book cases and spot things I haven't read and think this is the year I'll get round to it! Or to reread old favourites.
And I've just been made redundant so tightening the book buying belt is even more important.

Anyone fancy giving it a go?

Ooh I'm really pleased some of you are up for this! Nearly 4 months done for me which included a very peculiar visit to Hay on Wye where I didn't buy a single book Shock though I think dh may have done so and they will probably find their way into my Christmas presents! But I never asked for them so it doesn't count right?! And for the first time in as long as I can remember I haven't asked pil for a book token for Christmas...

So I propose I start a thread in the new year and we can chat about the finds from our bookshelves, the cold sweats, the withdrawal symptoms, the redundant Waterstones loyalty cards, and offer support Grin

Earlier this year a friend organised a book swap. We all bought along books we'd finished with and swapped, great way to get new books without spending money and found a few things I wouldn't have bought myself

I have so many books, actual paper ones and on my Kindle, that I will have to live until I am 157 before I actually need to buy any more books. I am trying to read the paper ones to reduce the amount of stuff I have so would love to join you in a year of no book buying.

I really need to do this, all those Kindle daily deals are getting expensive.

I love this idea, but frankly the thought terrifies me. I can imagine it would be like being told "no tea for a year". Brought me out in a cold sweat just reading the OP 😂

I have done this for the past 6 months. Its easy if you have a kindle. just register with the library website and get them all that way. Loads of books are available in ebook format which means you get them just as quickly as downloading from amazon or if not then you can order from the library. ours gets ordered books in within 2 days.

I was buying a book every weekish and so Ive saved a small fortune.

But Oxfam bookshops are irresistible.....

I really need to do this but , oh the pain.....

And I'm waiting for another Amazon Christmas book to arrive.

Right, right. I WILL do this.

I was feeling slightly ill at the thought of not buying any books, but then someone suggested alternating new/old so I will do that instead. (Blood pressure starts to come down... Grin)

I've already cut down my book buying a lot. I don't buy new fiction at all except for new Stephen Kings, and only buy new non-fiction if I have a book token or am on/going on holiday. I do buy from charity shops and on Kindle (but only cheap ones!). I don't think I could go completely 'no buy' as I've read most of the free stuff on Kindle that I'd be interested in.

No book buying?!?!

Eek. I do need to do this though. I have a full shelf of unread books plus some of DH's and DS's I'd like to read and far too many on my Kindle.

I did the Good Reads Book Challenge this year and am almost at my 50 books. Will repeat it this year but with books I already own. Am in a book club so might have to buy those though.

Is it cheating to quickly buy a few on kindle that I've been wanting to read but haven't got yet? There are three I can think of. Blush

I also need to tighten my belt in 2017 and had been thinking of not buying books for a while. After reading this thread I counted 38 unread books on my shelf and on my Kindle and I'm hoping that seeing that amount posted will give me the motivation not to buy any. I'm such a sucker for charity shop finds, the three paperbacks for £10 on Amazon, and the buy one get one half price books at Waterstones.

Agree with the OP that a thread next year would be useful.

Two words: independent bookshops...

No chance. I buy books to read, read them, then look for something new. I think I can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of unread books I have in the house.

I think it depends what type of reader you are, some people do hoard and buy as soon as they're recommended stuff. I never seem to have enough books 'lined up' Sad

I know I won't be able to resist a kindle deal in the Christmas sale. But once that's done, I'm doing my very best to resist temptation and read the books I already own.

LB Me too. Any books in our house that I haven't read are dp's or dd1's, and most of them I've at least attempted to read and decided I didn't like. If I buy books, I read them immediately.

I couldn't not read for 12 months? Is a book swap classed as paying for a book we post books between us?

Report
CiderwithBuda · 20/12/2016 11:30

thegoodname - it's not not reading! Just not buying books IF like some of us you have a big stash of unread books already.

Although Nickelbabe has made me feel guilty! I do really want to keep actual bookshops on our high streets. I know it's not independent bu we have a really good Waterstones and I have had some great recommendations from one of the guys in there and I want them to stay open! We do have an independent book shop but I never think to use it as it's a bit out of the way.

Hmm. I have a massive unread list on my Kindle (171 - even at 99p each and some freebies that's a heck of a lot of money).

I don't think I could do a year w/o any book buying - but I like the ideas on the thread of one old, one new, or one wildcard for each library visit. I would also feel better about supporting local (even if chain) bookshops than Amazon.

Hmm. So I might have a think about what to do. Maybe a different thing each month: TBR pile January, library only February, library + local bookshop March, then repeat. Or maybe throw in a month of every other book a reread.

I like your ideas there, glitter. I fear that I'm setting myself up to failure if I have a self imposed complete ban on book buying for a year. I do need to make serious inroads into my the pile but also want the flexibility of introducing new books perhaps via the library more.

I do use the library often anyway, but find I have to order in books because it's so small and the stock isn't great there. And it costs only a few pence less to order a book in from the library than it would to buy it if it came up on 99p kindle deal. That's a tough call - support the library or own your own copy forever?

I think I will begin by making a list of what I want to start reading, from my own shelves and Kindle, and see where that journey takes me. I did sort of do that last year but with added purchases Blush.

I haven't actually got a library card at all currently Blush - partly because the nearest libraries either involve going through muggers' paradise creepy subways or past exceedingly dodgy pubs, and I couldn't figure out which I would be most likely to be able to reach in daylight hours. I should join one though.

But ebooks from the library are completely free

I don't think most library ebooks offer a kindle compatible format, do they?

Report
nickelbabeinamanger · 20/12/2016 20:45

No. Libraries use epub mainly, not kindle.
But you can download free readers on a tablet
