What we're reading

A year of no book buying. Anyone care to join me?

I've had a dummy run, starting at the beginning of the school year in September, just so it didn't seem too daunting! But so far I'm embracing it. I buy a lot of books generally and just thought we'd got so many in the house. I do read the vast majority of what I buy, but I do have books I haven't read, and my husband and teenage kids have some great books I would love to read.
So over the past 3 months I have definitely decreased my bedside pile. I am currently reading A Christmas Carol which dh reads every December but I never have. It's quite a joy to browse our book cases and spot things I haven't read and think this is the year I'll get round to it! Or to reread old favourites.
And I've just been made redundant so tightening the book buying belt is even more important.

Anyone fancy giving it a go?

Regular, but serial name-changer here. Happy New Year everyone :) I began this morning by unsubscribing from the Kindle Daily Deal newsletter and the Audible one too. Feeling brave at the moment. I won't give up using the library, though, as it needs our village's support to keep going, but will be focusing mainly on reading my book back log.

Happy new year all!
So thought I'd kick off the new year no book buying by telling you what I'm currently reading. Finishing off two books I've dipped in and out of, both non fiction. First is The Year of Reading Dangerously by Andy Miller. He's a lifelong book addict, book editor, writer, blogger, and decides to spend a year reading books he thinks he should have done, e.g. Moby Dick, and writes about them, along with some autobiographical stuff.
The second is Sex Lives of English Women by Wendy Jones. I've been reading the chapters in order of how interesting they sound from the title!
Both should be finished in a day or 2 so I need to start thinking what next.

So what are you lot reading?

My reading list just got more interesting as my friend offered me a book to borrow! It's a non fiction so I won't start it just yet (reading Delusions of Gender ATM)

My current actual reading is the above, a crappy novel called the Book of You, and I'm also reading the manga version of one of my favourite anime films

Cagliostro I have Delusions of Gender on my to be read pile (another book I have had far too long)

I'd love to join please as it's an idea I've loved since reading Howard's End is on the Landing. Currently reading The Dust that Falls from Dreams by Louis de Berniers - after that I have shelves to get through. Up for the challenge as I have a serous book buying habit.

My first book is a library one I had had on order for a while - Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Not wildly enthralled with it but it is quite a quick read.

Also, reading The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig, with my DC. We are loving this.

And also The Midnight Gang by David Walliams. We've read nearly all of his books so far. As good as always.

Happy New Year everyone - I am reading Remember Me by Derek Hansen, which is a good read so far. I am off to unsubscribe from the Amazon Kindle Daily Deal and remove some of the temptation.

I'd like to join too. Have lots of books at home that either need to be read or be got rid of.

Will still need to purchase books for my bookclub though.

Happy new year all. I got the third book in Elly Griffith's crime series about the magician Max Mephisto called the Blood Card. Is a nice easy read. Have resisted going into any bookshops for two whole days. Both of which have been Bank Holidays.....

I'll not make a complete ban on book buying (monthly book club selections can be tough otherwise) but I will be working hard to get through my already owned mountain, so I hope this thread will help me to keep that goal!

First book read this year. Library book - Punishment by Anne Holt. First in series, Norwegian crime. Had seen fourth in series Modus dramatised on ITV Collections recently which inspired me to read the series. Pretty good. Have the second ready to read but have started Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty as there's only 11 days to go before it's deleted off my overdrive account. Did look at Daily Deal but was easy to resist. Nothing I fancied anyway.

Still can't find my kindle! Put the app on my phone so I can continue what I'm reading.

I told my mum about the no book buying, she looked terribly confused as if such an idea could not possibly exist 😂

I have finished my first two - the library ebook Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (not sure what to make of this) and The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig, which we really enjoyed.

I was tempted today in Waterstone's to buy a diet book that looks interesting but thought of this thread and the hundreds of pounds I spent on books last year and realised the library will have it.

From my TBR pile of 34 I've got two of them on the go - the recent Bruce Springsteen book and Even Dogs in the Wild, by Ian Rankin.

I just reserved three books with my local library on their website: This Thing of Darkness by Harry Wilson (inspired by the 50 book thread) , Nutshell by Ian McEwan and Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier: starting as I mean to go on!
I got quite a few books for Christmas presents and have 33 unread on my kindle so in between those, my Christmas presents (one was Jerusalem by Alan Moore which is a huge book, will probably take me months!), using the library, and unread books on my shelves, I might actually manage this!

I'm in! I sort of did this last year (1 book bought) and still have dozens left on my shelf to read.
I got five more books for Christmas so will begin with them. Started the year with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child which was fun, if a complete travesty!

I wanted to try and read a book a week (or maybe fortnight is more realistic!) but as I'm on statutory maternity pay I think I might join you in this!!!

Having my resolve sorely tempted today. Visiting in-laws at the moment and they have so many brilliant books and always tell us to borrow what we want. But doesn't help me get through my tbr pile at home! So resolutely ignoring their book cases for now..
Not getting much of a start to the year's reading either as we're sharing a room with do and I forgot to bring my book light with me so no bed time reading. Mind you very late to bed so probably just as well.

paris. I would nt exclude borrowing from family? But I guess it's not going to reduce your TBR.

Cag I mentioned this concept to a friend today who screamed in horror!
I have read about three pages of my book this year so won't be making any inroads on my TBR pile for some time! I used to spend 2 hours a day commuting by train which gave me plenty of reading time. Now I commute 2 hours by car which isn't really compatible with reading!

Well how is everyone doing? I nearly twitched at my Amazon kindle deal but did nt 😀

I haven't bought anything so far, though I was very tempted by a Book people offer this week: might need to unsubscribe from their emails! I borrowed two books from the library today: Our Endless Numbered Days and the latest Karin Slaughter novel.

I bought two books at the very end of 2016 as I had a voucher. I read one of them but my tbr list is now one book longer than when I first posted.

I have been studiously avoiding Amazon and the book people. Have been too ill to venture to bookshops and practically closed my eyes to return books to the library. Two and a half books into my TBR pile!
