I received my copy yesterday, made me laugh as it was before I'd had the email and it came with no paperwork. The front cover just says "DO NOT TRUST THIS BOOK" I thought it was some weird cult thing, till I saw the title on the spine of course :)

Started it last night and am enjoying it so far, will post back later.

traceofinsanity · 22/11/2016 19:38

Thrilled to get the book - thank you - getting stuck in this evening. P.s love the intriguing cover!

alienforce · 28/11/2016 15:30

So i finished Behind her eyes in 2 days, it is a very gripping story and I liked the main character Louise, but disliked Adele, The main male character - I feel that we could have learnt a little bit more about him as for most of the book, he was unlikeable but that's the whole point of the book. I hadn't expected the ending and not sure if it spoiled the book a little for me, as it was so unbelievable. however the book as a whole was enjoyable and engaging. would deff recommend to my bookclub. Cannot say much more as it would spoil the entire book.

diamantegal · 28/11/2016 15:39

Thanks for the book - I enjoyed it all the way through until the end which I thought was a bit meh.

But in answer to your questions...

What did I think of the characters? They were interesting - not necessarily people is want to be friends with, but with enough intrigue about them to want to keep reading and find out more. My view of them changed as I learnt more about them and was a lot of the reason why I enjoyed the book.

My reaction to the ending and what I thought of it - it was definitely unexpected and not in a good way. Difficult to say much without giving it away, but it just all got a bit bizarre - I was expecting a clever psychological thriller and this just felt a bit flat. If you like that sort of thing then it was probably a good twist - but I was hoping for something a bit more "real".

Overall though I liked the book and the style of writing, and would try something by this author again. Thanks for the copy!

MarriedinMaui · 01/12/2016 19:24

I've just started it. I find it quite distracting to be told so repeatedly on the cover that there is some twisty ending. I think I'd rather discover that for myself. I just keep thinking of theories as to what it could be.

Also the psychiatrist stuff is all a bit silly. Consultant psychiatrists in London work for the NHS and maybe do a few sessions a week private practice. They don't tend to work full time in a private clinic. And "outreach work" is an American concept. We have the NHS instead.

diamantegal · 01/12/2016 23:28

I'm assuming the cover will be different when it's a sale copy and this was just a proof copy? If not, agreed - way too much of an effort to play on the ending (including the # suggestion) - I just hadn't seen that as a final cover.

asuwere · 02/12/2016 16:29

I finished the book last night, really enjoyed it, thanks again!

What did you think of the characters?
I quite liked them, they were all quite different to each other which was good and they developed well as you're reading. David doesn't have much detail but then that's the point, I think.

-What was your reaction to the ending?
-Did you expect the ending?
I liked the ending, I wasn't expecting it at all. I do read a lot of books with twists and I enjoy trying to work out what the twist will be. I definitely didn't work this one out in advance. In the last few pages, I could see where it was going but up to that point, I just couldn't quite get it. It's hard without giving anything away. Yes, it may not be totally believable but then part of the fun of reading books. And, who knows, it could be true!

Would recommend it!

Can I ask, as it's a proof copy and it says it can't be sold, can it be donated to a charity shop or would they not be allowed to sell it?

cathisherwood · 03/12/2016 17:19

Wow - that was a great read. To start with its hard to work out who are the victims in this story - the cheating husband, the beautiful wife, the single mum? In the end you wonder who isn't a victim? I liked the way each character wrote their chapters to keep the narrative going and although I don't usually like books that go back and forward in time this technique was essential in the unfolding of this tale. Interesting characters - the woman in this story were the more believable, great twists at the end. I got a hint of one twist a chapter or two before it unfolded but the final twist was a surprise - a great read. Thanks mumsnet. It cheered up some grey winter days

MarriedinMaui · 07/12/2016 20:33

Finished it now.

I thought the character of Louise was well done. She was likeable and believable and her relationship with her son was very realistic. Some of her descision making was frustratingly unbelievable though when needed to push the plot forwards. Adele was delightfully creepy.

I found the ending really disappointing. This is the sort of light frothy type of book that I would read for fun, and it made me miserable. I felt like my emotions had been manipulated just for the sake of a clever twist...I would have much preferred if the plan had been foiled at the last minute or something. Because of that I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

It's very hard to discuss this book without spoilers. There is more I could say but not without giving too much away.

littlesallyracket · 07/12/2016 23:23

Behind Her Eyes is primarily a psychological thriller, with all the hallmarks of that genre - flawed characters, a somewhat troubled female protagonist, unreliable narrators, sharp plot twists and intense relationships. However, there is also a plot strand that takes it beyond this. Louise suffers from night terrors, which leads her to practise 'lucid dreaming', a method by which nightmare sufferers learn to retain just enough consciousness to control their dreams and steer them in a less distressing direction. It soon becomes apparent that what she's doing is far more than that, weaving a mildly supernatural element into the story.

Unfortunately, I don't think this quite works. The 'lucid dreaming' part of the story is essential to the plot, yet also somehow feels very minor and develops very slowly. I don't mind books that subvert or combine genres, but when I'd finished the book I felt dissatisfied with the way the paranormal part of the book felt like a cursory add-on for most of hte story, rather than being deftly woven into the action. I think people who are expecting a straightforward psychological thriller grounded in realism might be irritated with the lucid dreaming part of the storyline (which incidentally, I actually found quite dull for the most part) and people who enjoy supernatural fiction will probably feel that the scant treatment that part of the story gets doesn't really do it justice. I would have liked to see more commitment to the mix of genres and more equal time allocated to them. This doesn't feel like a combination of psychological and supernatural fiction - instead it feels like a psychological thriller with a jarring addition. Sarah Pinborough is best known as an author who writes fiction with a supernatural slant and I think Behind Her Eyes would be more satisfying if her expertise in this area was put to better use.

Aside from this, I think it's fair to say that the characters are not groundbreaking - they're all very much recognisable types, including the supporting players - but they;re certainly not unrealistic and do come to life on the page. It's possible to root for Louise even when she's making extremely questionable decisions, of which there are many. The author also succeeds in making the reader hate Adele and/or David one moment and then feel sorry for them the next, which is very effective. This is very much a book in which you feel that you can't quite trust your own judgement.

The promotional hype in advance of Behind Her Eyes being released has already put a strong emphasis on it having a shocking twist at the end, so I feel that I can mention this in the review without revealing anything that won't already have been talked about. I do agree that it's a belter of an ending, and although I was thinking in the vaguely the right direction, I didn't fully see it coming. I also think it was quite a brave choice by the author - it's impossible to say why without giving away spoilers, but all I will say is that it will leave a lot of readers feeling very uncomfortable.

purplemonstermum · 09/12/2016 16:01

Thank you for my copy of this book. It took me about a week to read.

What did you think of the characters? I am afraid that all 3 of them (4 if you count Rob) annoyed me. Although there were elements that I could relate to in all of them, there was much more that I found unrealistic about them. E.g. I am not sure people form such intense relationships/friendships so quickly, especially when they come from such different backgrounds. I did not feel David's behaviour/work conditions were very typical of a consultant psychiatrist.

What was your reaction to the ending? I must admit, I read the ending more quickly than the rest of the book because I wanted to find out what was going to happen. So I was gripped by it. I found it surprisingly satisfying and I think it will stay with me longer than the endings of some other supposed psychological thrillers with twists!

Did you expect the ending? I had an inclination of what might be going to be revealed and I would say that I was about half right, but I had not worked out the details of how it would happen. So that was a surprise.

I think the ending lifted the book slightly in my estimation, actually. Prior to that I had mostly felt irritated by it!

Louise is a single mum who has night terrors. On a rare night out she meets a man. They share a connection which they both feel and they also share a kiss. When Louise goes into work she discovers that ‘connection man’ is her new (married) boss, David.
Her ex-husband drops a bombshell in that wants to take her little boy away to France with him and his new girlfriend who is newly pregnant. Louise doesn’t cope with this news very well and combined with ‘connection man’ her ordinary world starts to lose its rosy tinge. Little does she know how much it will change…
Inadvertently Louise makes friends with David’s wife Adele. Years ago Adele use to suffer with bad dreams and being unable to sleep so they too have a connection.
Louise has a hard time being friends with Adele and also wanting, and ultimately, sleeping with David. She wants to tell David about Adele and feels guilty about sleeping with David. She wants to tell Adele about David but doesn’t want to hurt her. She is in turmoil, but is easily led and always finds an excuse not to tell either one the truth today and puts it off. She gets sucked into their marriage and their lives and can’t seem to extricate herself.
I thought that Adele was out to ruin Louise’s life but the truth was stranger…
I thought the characters were great because they seem ordinary but they all have flaws, as we all do.
It is an absolutely fantastic book. You really won’t get the ending until you are almost there and then the truth hits hard and shocks to the core. Oh My God!
I couldn’t write this review straight away as my head was spinning so I left it a couple of days. I keep thinking about it! It’s a really messes with your head.

Thanks to Mumsnet for the free copy of this book, I’m so pleased to have had the opportunity to read it. It has made me look at people in a new light….

RainbowHash · 16/12/2016 17:12

Thank you again for sending me this book - was very uplifting to 'win' something in the post like that!

Overall, I enjoyed the book. Definitely a thriller with a supernatural aspect - which is a new concept for me, having not read anything like it before. I found the writing to be quite simplistic, but it also ended up being a real page turner for me and I struggled to put it down when I got into it. I would recommend to my friends as good entertainment, although I was also a little disturbed by it!

What did you think of the characters? I found the characters a bit too obvious and I did struggle identifying with any of them. It was interesting though how sympathy for each character came and went at different points throughout the story.

What was your reaction to the ending? I felt quite disturbed to be honest. And sad!

Did you expect the ending? No, I didn’t register at all and it was quite a shock!

Thanks again for the book – wasn’t particularly challenging but I did get sucked into it and enjoyed it.

Tigerlily13 · 20/12/2016 21:45

Wow! Just finished this last night - what an ending! Not what I expected AT ALL as it crossed the line from a general fiction to fantasy in a few short chapters.
I liked the characters, they were believable and well written, but some of their decision making was awful - especially Louise.
Great book, though the ending did leave me heartbroken for one minor character, I'm sure other readers will feel the same!

traceofinsanity · 22/12/2016 21:43

Thanks again for the book mumsnet. I found it to be a real page turner, very gripping. I do like a good thriller, although have not read anything with a supernatural element to it before. All the hype around the ending slightly ruined it for me though as I was constantly trying to second guess the characters to figure out what the twist was going to be (I was nowhere close with my guesses), but I would have preferred to have just taken it for what it was all the way.
I liked the characters, yes Louise made some pretty ropey decisions, but I could kind of see how it could happen, maybe (!). I would have liked to have got to know David better, although I guess it was the point of the story not to.
I found the ending a bit of a let down actually. Can't go into detail without giving elements away, but I think, as previously mentioned, the hype around the ending meant my expectations were sky high so it was unlikely ever to live up to that.
Overall quite a good read that I may recommend, although not wholeheartedly.

TracyKNixon · 26/12/2016 07:24

Very impressed with this novel, the first Pinborough I have read, and I will be looking for her earlier works. Pinborough delivers a fantastic thriller with Behind Her Eyes. Characters and plotlines are not always what you think they are (or want them to be), and that is what makes this such a great story; consistent quality writing. Hands down, this should be the big talked about thriller come January.

glenka · 26/12/2016 07:29

I don't normally read this type of book but I think I might do after reading about this one.

jacqui5366 · 26/12/2016 08:01

the character could be just an ordinary person which you see on the bus, at the school gates every day. who meets some one, falls under a spell and her life changes and you follow her page turning story with suspense and excitement and a 'please don't do that; thoughts. Well done author.

mumpetuk1 · 26/12/2016 08:11

I have heard it is a great read. I will be buying it today so I can read on my holiday.

janeyf1 · 26/12/2016 09:03

I love thrillers and think this book looks great, I want to read it

It seems that I missed my chance to enter to win a copy - pity as it seems good. Will have to look out for it in the shops or library.
