This looks like a great read

DS loved both the Boy called Christmas last year and now the Girl who saved Christmas: its pitched just right for a 7-8year old with some great vocabulary and puns/jokes/mild peril,
Personally I like the Truth Pixie, the chocolate coin bank where all the elves never save and from the first book - the incomprehensible mouse with a deep certainty about the existence of cheese

But this year DS had been reading it before bed on Christmas eve, and left his copy out on the table with Santa's mince pie and sherry
and Santa wrote in the flyleaf and left some sooty fingerprints on it (need to have a word with Santa about that bit.... possibly too much sherry)

really enjoyable for all

Marg2k8 · 29/12/2016 10:14

Sounds a great book, although I have not read it.

I haven't read the book yet :( but would welcome the chance as any book that catches a child imagination and encourages adults to read with them is an excellent choice :)

phillie1 · 29/12/2016 11:43

nice read

A great bedtime read. Children loved it and wanted me to keep reading more.

My 7yr old didn't like it. He found it upsetting. Aimed at the wrong age group. OK for older kids, but a bit scary for younger ones.

Crunchybadger · 30/12/2016 09:45

I read this as I planned to give my free review copy to DD (6). Unfortunately, it's not for her: a slowing dying mother and grinding poverty is much more distressing than, say, Dahl's swift dispatch of various parents, partly because the humour is not quite right. The trolls chasing the Elves also disturbed me: not sure I'll forget that drawing in a hurry!

Finally, I'm afraid I'm not keen on placing the onus on kids to give them responsibility to believe or the magic dies .... So not for us.

I saw this book in my local independent bookshop and purchased it as a last Xmas minute present for my 7 year old. We started Christmas day and have been reading a few chapters every evening. We are half way through now. Due to the mumsnet chat about the sadness of death of her mum, I made sure I read this chapter to my daughter and skipped through this a bit quick. However, so far, my 7 year old girl loves this book. My dd loves the magical world and believes in Father Christmas. This reenforces all the magic at Christmas for young children. She doesn't like the trolls and wants to see if they mad news for the second year in Elfhelm. I think this is a book that my daughter will cherish this christmas and is patiently waiting for me to take turns in reading with her every bedtime. The language is suitable for my 7 year old, who is a very good reader and will often devour a whole book in an evening. She is a bit of a bookworm!!. I love that this book is keeping the magical aspect going to children. I can't wait until the ending!!!

It's a great christmassy book

molly57 · 30/12/2016 20:44

I haven't read this book yet but its sound very topical.

MrsKCastle · 30/12/2016 21:08

My 8 year old DD found a copy of this in her stocking. We have been reading it together since, so we haven't finished it but have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. I wasn't sure how DD would cope with the mother dying, but she was ok. I like how the action moves between Father Christmas in Elfhelm and Amelia. It keeps you reading on with lots of cliffhangers and short chapters. Both DD and I enjoyed the humour in the book. We also love Chris Mould's illustrations, having previously enjoyed the Something Wickedly Weird series.

Definite thumbs up from DD and I, I have already downloaded The Boy Called Christmas onto my kindle.

my daughter would love this :)

amanda08 · 30/12/2016 21:41

My son read this book after recently losing his grandma and it actually helpt him with his emotions

cwalliss82 · 31/12/2016 06:56

A great bedtime read at Christmas time with all the family

Celama · 31/12/2016 09:31

This book was greatly enjoyed by the children as we read it together. An emotive but exciting storyline with lovely illustrations throughout and I will purchase A boy called Christmas for next year. One of my children particularly enjoys books set in different times so this was a winner with her anyway.

maria08k · 31/12/2016 09:34

My niece loved this book! It was a giggle a minute!

wef1984 · 31/12/2016 10:42

My 9 year old loves this book, we read it together and she was engrossed right from the start

jazzitup · 31/12/2016 13:06

An enjoyable read, Happy New Year everyone.

VickyRsuperstar · 31/12/2016 17:30

It's a lovely enchanting well written book. My kids don't believe in Santa, but they loved to use their imagination. Some of the topics were very sad and the kids were a little upset in places, but they still really enjoyed it and we plan on buying another book by the same author.

starryskies78 · 31/12/2016 21:56

Thank you for our copy. It's strikingly gorgeous and I couldn't wait to dive in! I read it with my 9 year old niece and we really enjoyed it. I think that's about the right age, think it would have been a bit old for my 4 year old boy probably just because of Mr Creeper! It's a bit scary for little ones. Will look forward to reading it to him in a few years though.

clarabella12 · 31/12/2016 23:10

my children loved it.

todormirchev · 01/01/2017 11:00

My daughter is young (5) so I read it to her every night before bed. So far she likes the story very much. As a parent I found the story charming and heartwarming, with strong messages about hope, empathy and seeking for magic in every situatuion we face. I think that with time, when my daugher grow and is able to read it herself, she will understand and appreciate the main ideas of the book more deeply. I will definitely recommend this wonderful book :)
