I just read a terrible book

Really, really bad.

Woman is married and has two rude daughters who I think we are supposed to be charmed by.

Husband leaves and starts a relationship with extremely rich beautiful glamorous woman. We are supposed to believe she would be interested in an ordinary bloke with kids.

Wife burns down the house she lives in. Husband comes back but she shags his brother instead.

Then there is a whole boring subplot about wife's mother having left when she was a kid but it goes nowhere.

I am annoyed with myself for reading it as I'd read another of this authors books and it was awful. But the blurb sounded good so I thought I'd give her another chance.

So I am asking you for a synopsis of a terrible book YOU have read!

I've got My Husbands Wife on my kindle waiting to be read. Is it really that bad? Can't wait to read it now in an odd kind of way!

Namechanger2015 · 11/10/2016 17:51

Argh, I just bought this book on a 99p deal as well! Not read it, but if it's as shite as Behind Closed Doors I won't bother, that was dire!

ChuckitintheBucket · 11/10/2016 17:54

Who is the author op?

flippinada · 11/10/2016 18:04

I recently read The Borgia Bride. The author manages to portray the Borgias (yes, those Borgias) in a way that manages to be both boring and offensive - I think some of it might actually be libellous. That's actually quite some going.

Oh, and the main character is the most transparent Mary Jane you ever read. You know the type, all men fall in love with her cos she's so amazingly gorgeous and brilliant compared to all the other women, who just don't match up to jet amazingly gorgeous brilliant-ness

mrsblackcat · 11/10/2016 18:08

Amanda Prowse :)

And yes it is that bad!

Ah the one on my kindle is by Jane Corry so it's a different one then. Hmm disappointed now!

ChuckitintheBucket · 11/10/2016 18:13

Looks like I've got the same one as veggie, sounds a bit grim.

mrsblackcat · 11/10/2016 18:14

I want to read that one! Grin let me know what you think!

I think the kids in MHW were most annoying. Why would we find rude kids funny and sweet?

I thought Casual Vacancy was awful :

In summary, a set of characters who are a set of stereotypes of "Daily Mail Reader Types" have prejudices against people "off the estate" - the characters off the estate live up to every prejudice they hold, the end.

The worst books I've read recent years :

Man's friend who is poet dies, mans friend writes lengthy commentary as to why his friends poems are about him. They aren't.

People start receiving phone calls from dead relatives. A criminal conspiracy ensues.

allthingsred · 11/10/2016 18:19

So glad I looked at this thread was gonna read this tonight. (My husband wife) won't be now x

mrsblackcat · 11/10/2016 18:21

Don't some books sound great from the synopsis? But then are dreadful.

I was really ConfusedHmmwhen I finished "The Woman who went to bed for a year". Loved reading it but left really disappointed by the way it ended...

pictish · 11/10/2016 18:26

I just finished The Loving Husband by Christobel Kent.
What a load of old shite. Slow, meandering, dull and featured characters with no personalities or charm. I hoped the 'reveal' would be worth it. It really wasn't.

I get so annoyed by having my time wasted by bad books.

flippinada · 11/10/2016 18:27

I've read that one gerty. Loved the start but it sort of petered out a bit towards the end. Such a change as I love Sue Townsend's writing.

flippinada · 11/10/2016 18:27

*shame, not change

The Mistake I Made

Physiotherapist and crashing bore (seriously she was the most boring character I've ever come across!) with precocious son and a lovely cottage in a tourist village that she can't afford the rent on so the bailiffs come.

She agrees to sleep with her boss for money who is creepy and ends up dead.

She agrees to sleep with rich man about town, on an ad-hoc paid sex basis, also ends up being creepy and blackmails her.

She starts dating a Nice Man.

It all comes out. Big drama at a party. The Rich Creepy Man goes to prison for blackmail or murder or maybe both. The Nice Man goes away for a bit but comes round in the end. She stays in the village and it all blows over and she finds a job with better hours and pay. Her son gets run over but then he's fine and he gets a dog.

Veggiesupremeextracheese · 11/10/2016 21:11

Ahh mine was the Jane Correy one! I really enjoyed it, despite it being rather far fetched!

TheEternalForever · 21/10/2016 13:07

I only enjoyed parts of Casual Vacancy - I found myself not caring about lots of the characters and having to skim whole chunks of the book to get back to the (few) characters I could stand. Her Cuckoo Calling series (all her books by her penname Robert Galbraith) are brilliant though, I love them. OP's My Husbands Wife sounds terrible but the one about the solicitor sounds good! (Although if I were ever tempted to read it I'll have to make sure I get the right one Wink )

TheEternalForever · 21/10/2016 13:08

MadHattersWineParty the dog sounds like the best character! Grin
