Can I ask for the best book you've read in 2016?

It doesn't matter what genre, whether it's YA or adult or what year it was originally written in or whether it's fiction or non-fiction. Tell me what made it "best"

I used to read a lot and I just burned out of it, I realise I really miss it and want to get back into it so I'm building an Amazon wishlist to work through

All Suggestions Welcome

I used to read SO much, but it's fallen seriously by the wayside since DD2 came along. I made a concerted effort earlier this year though and bought a load of actual paperbacks as DH has stolen my kindle. Girl on a Train, was OK and an easy read so good one to kick off with. I loved We Were Liars, and read it in about 2 days flat. Think it's YA but immensely readable. Also enjoyed The Passenger, even though I didn't overly like the central character. Have The Light Between Oceans lined up next, so glad to see lots of good reviews here.

EverySongbirdSays · 28/09/2016 23:29

We were liars is on my list

As we're all recommending though I've really struggled to read this year the book I keep going back to is the collection of Letters Between Six Sisters, The Mitfords

My Name's Not Friday by Jon Walter- YA book about a boy sold into slavery

Best State Ever by Dave Barry- I grew up in Florida so had a good laugh reading this

Moogdroog · 28/09/2016 23:46

Another vote for A Little Life. I read all 700 odd pages in about 6 days and it left me in tatters. Brilliant book.

Also, a Brief History of Seven Killings, The Invention of Wings, Yellow Crocus, The Colour Purple, A Trail of Broken Wings, Life After Life.

Couldn't stand H is for Hawk.

boilingkettle · 28/09/2016 23:52

I've just noted down a load of these books and had to stop at 20 otherwise my bank account will be in tatters!
Thanks for all the recommends.
The book that has stayed with me most in recent years is The Night Circus. Really beautiful book if you've not read it already. Also Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane is great (and quite short).

EverySongbirdSays · 29/09/2016 00:12

Yeah kettle I've just recommended Night Circus upthread. Have read a few Gaimans so will put that down.

I am nervous of A Little Life moog based on what some have said about too depressing.

Read, Colour Purple, Invention of Wings, Life After Life, Killings is on the list, will note others.

kitty that sounds funny off the title

Elizabeth is Missing- beautifully written with a touching insight into dementia.
Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier- read this too and found it gripping
The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton- read it earlier this year and enjoyed the twists and turns
Currently reading Testament of Youth but would not rate it as my best read. I am not sure why I find it a bit heavy-going. This may sound mean and I am a fan of Shirley Williams but I just don't warm to Vera Brittain although I admire her dedication to study, nursing and seeking to end war.
Planning to read Girl on The Train next.

Charley50 · 29/09/2016 07:01

BoilingKettle - do you have libraries where you live? Saves the bank balance for sure.

mizu · 29/09/2016 07:15

We were liars

Lie with me - new Sabine Durrant, was great

girlsyearapart · 29/09/2016 07:58

Oh I forgot The miniaturist was really good

MermaidofZennor · 29/09/2016 12:08

If you're looking for something dark, a bit gothic, and Victorian as well, then I started reading The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge this week. It's shaping up quite well as creepy Autumn read. Has given me a shudder or two so far.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 29/09/2016 13:00

that sounds good Mermaid another on my list

have recently got back into reading, I love getting lost in a book

EverySongbirdSays · 29/09/2016 14:30

The Lie Tree is on my list.

Scarlett girls

I REALLY disliked The Miniaturist - I've literally just had a long conversation with my mate as to why we both disliked it.

Read Rebecca, didn't finish Elizabeth Is Missing.

Also planning on reading Girl On The Train.

Enthusiasm I have listened to "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" written and narrated by Maya Angelou, all 10+ hours of it. Very interesting auto biography of life for a black person in the Arkansas, in , I think the 1930s. I'm not sure if the book would have been as good as listening to the author herself.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 29/09/2016 19:48

MissMargie I love I Know Why The Cadged Bird Sings and the follow up books

I read it some time ago. She had a lovely soothing voice. I love listening to audio books so will defeintly give it a listen thank you

Sorry didn't mean to hijack thread

Just though of another great read this year How To Live Like A Victorian. It's a fascinating book on every aspect of Victorian life

Terrifiedandregretful · 06/10/2016 20:54

I've got back into reading this year as I don't have a TV. I've discovered Sarah Waters have loved Tipping the Velvet and The Paying Guests and I'm about to start Fingersmith.

EverySongbirdSays · 06/10/2016 23:49

Fingersmith is THE BEST - THE. BEST. I stayed up all night to read it.

Not read TPG or Affinity yet but Little stranger very good, odd. Night Watch was average. Tipping The Velvet bit of a silly end. I think I'm missing one? But it won't come to me.
