Can I ask for the best book you've read in 2016?

It doesn't matter what genre, whether it's YA or adult or what year it was originally written in or whether it's fiction or non-fiction. Tell me what made it "best"

I used to read a lot and I just burned out of it, I realise I really miss it and want to get back into it so I'm building an Amazon wishlist to work through

All Suggestions Welcome

Every & Perspicia The Hanging Tree has had its release delayed until next year. All fans are fuming.
Apparently not a publishing house problem as originally thought.
Mr Aaaranovitch prefers the comic book format now, apparently.
I loved Foxglove Summer.
Talks are still ongoing re. televising the series, I think.

Enb76 · 27/09/2016 15:50

'All the light we cannot see' by Anthony Duerr? has been my favourite this year.

EverySongbirdSays · 27/09/2016 15:58

Noooo susiella rage! You mean they'll be graphic novels now?? Whut?

Enb76 I've read the start twice this year, it feels like a book I would normally love but can't keep the momentum going whatsoever

'All the Light We Cannot See' by Anthony Doerr

DrawingaLine · 27/09/2016 16:04

X-post

Sorry

I'm reading Daphne Du Maurier's 'Rebecca' at the moment, which is fab

paperdreams16 · 27/09/2016 16:15

I've read a few books this year which have stuck in my mind - The Year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota, We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas, When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

Currently reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara which is fantastic but harrowing. It's a huge book, but I'm already wondering what I'm going to do with myself when it's over!

susiella · 27/09/2016 16:35

Yes Every that's what I was trying, & failing, to say. Graphic novels. There's 'something' due for release in 2017~The Furthest Station. Really, really hope it's not a comic.

Soubriquet · 27/09/2016 16:36

I find myself repeating this a lot but one of the best books I've read this year has to be Miss Peregines home for peculiar children

Soubriquet · 27/09/2016 16:38

Just seen you've read that one Grin

You do realise there are 3 books though don't you?

dogsdieinhotcars · 27/09/2016 16:38

My 10year old son begged me to read Harry Potter books as he'd read them all, one after the other! And I have read first 3 and was glad for his suggestion. I've loved them! My hubby, on the other hand, says I should read To Kill A Mockingbird. That's on my to do list.

SlinkyB · 27/09/2016 16:39

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Incredible real life story.

jaminthemiddle · 27/09/2016 17:07

EVery - it's jam packed and you can re-read it so worth the price! I think it's on offer in Waterstones at the mo.

Excusemyfrench · 27/09/2016 17:09

I am pilgrim!

KellyBoo800 · 27/09/2016 17:17

Ooh please try to go back to Elizabeth is Missing - such a good book, one of my favourites!

I've read so many good books this year but none seem to stick out as ones I would recommend, so I'm picking up a few from here to add to my wishlist. Thanks everyone!

awaynboilyurheid · 27/09/2016 17:22

Another vote for I am pilgrim

FreckledLeopard · 27/09/2016 17:35

I've just finished 'A Little Life' and am drained. It was definitely worth reading - it takes over your life - but I still have mixed feelings about its credibility.

I didn't particularly like 'When Breath Becomes Air' (sorry to those that loved it).

EverySongbirdSays · 27/09/2016 18:04

susiella Meh, not impressed

Sou I know.... but though I enjoyed it I didn't know if I enjoyed it enough to read two more...worth it or let down?

SlinkyB READ IT LOVED IT, IT'S BRILLIANT. Oprah is making the film did you know?

fluffywhitekittens · 27/09/2016 18:14

The Chaos walking trilogy by Patrick Ness.
I don't have much time to read but got through these in the summer holidays, and had to go straight to the next book each time.

BestIsWest · 27/09/2016 18:17

A classic - All Quiet On The Western Front bt Erich Maria Remarque. It is the story of four young school friends who enlist to fight for Germany at the start of the First World War. It is devastating but brilliant. I cried throughout.

EverySongbirdSays · 27/09/2016 18:19

High Five fluffy read all three met him twice, haven't read his latest yet but his adult book, The Crane Wife is wonderful. Huge fan. He has written the Doctor Who spin off Class

EverySongbirdSays · 27/09/2016 18:20

Cheers Best - I'll add that too.

Soubriquet · 27/09/2016 18:20

Definitely worth it

They get better and better

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 27/09/2016 18:21

The Chaos Walking trilogy are some of my favourite books ever. My dd has just read the hunger games trilogy and now I am nagging her to read them. They were far superior imho.

EverySongbirdSays · 27/09/2016 18:24

Read The Crane Wife Room101
