I've only just discovered these threads - sad person that I am. Now I'm getting a little sleep at night, I'm rediscovering reading.
I picked this book up and put it down twice before finally buying it and I'm so glad I did. It was just fabulous.... I loved it.

I really liked it, mind you I loved the quantum leap series as a teen, and this seems to be a more complex variant on it.

madamechocolat · 04/02/2007 19:32

I surprised myself in that I don't do sci-fi, historical novels generally - they just don't hit the spot. There was something quite charming about this I thought!
So Califrau and Mummytosteven - any recommendations as I'm on the lookout for a good read?

Not that this was sci-fi or historical - meant to say that I do not generally have the capacity to suspend my belief!

I absolutely loved this book, had tears streaming down my face in parts. One of themost moving love stories ever. I really enjoyed the Ukranian tractor Drivers one too, which I read straight after, very different but so funny. Am a real book worm ( apart from when on here)

Sheraz · 04/02/2007 19:37

Love Margaret Atwood Dior, have yet to reaf that one, not sure if to science fictiony for me.

I loved this book. One of the best books I have read in years.

Dinosaur · 05/02/2007 11:27

Read it but it left me cold. Characters oddly lifeless. Very unsexy sex.

VioletBaudelaire · 05/02/2007 11:28

Same as Califrau - plodded through it, but wasn't a thrill.

StrangeTown · 06/02/2007 21:43

I loved it TTW. My DH caught me sobbing over it and when he asked me what was wrong all I could do was bleat 'Henry's dead'. He still laughs about it.
Love Margaret Atwood too.

thewoodlandfairy · 06/02/2007 21:48

finished TTW last night and am now in that horrid limbo, what can i read next stage. Enjoyed the book but wouldn't rate it as highly as some have on here. What should i read next?

Bucketsofdynomite · 06/02/2007 22:03

Loved it, thought it was so romantic and that the scifi was actually secondary to that, a McGuffin to use a film studies phrase. Although the scifi was extremely well-thought out (but haven't re-read it yet, too scared I'll find a flaw.)
Cried at several bits throughout especially the poor timetravelling babies, really heartbreaking.

StrangeTown · 06/02/2007 22:19

I've re-read it saddo that I am. Only issue I have is once Henry and Alba are offical as CDP there is no mention of what happens about all that Stock Market stock market and lottery fiddling?
Still loved it though...

Monkeybar · 06/02/2007 22:28

I was recommended 'The five people you meet in heaven' and loved that. Same person recommended TTW, which I half loved and half didn't

thewoodlandfairy · 07/02/2007 19:29

the five people you meet in heaven - fab. what next?

pianist · 07/02/2007 19:31

DH enjoyed this book, which in my view is good enough reason for not bothering with it!

Clarinet60 · 09/02/2007 09:55

I am intrigued that some people found the characters lifeless and others didn't. I absolutely 'got' Clare & Henry with no trouble and relished the light hand, but I'm fascinated by readers reactions to different techniques.

Cloudhopper · 09/02/2007 10:02

I thought it was very moving about loss and love. In the milieu of the many mediocre books I have read, this one stands out as worth a read.

At least it was a different twist on love, and it offered an interesting insight into mortality and the concept of time.

Rhubarb · 09/02/2007 10:03

Yeah it was ok but could have been much much shorter. The domesticity got boring and I reckon it was just being padded out.

fishie · 09/02/2007 10:07

i thought it was very dull. if you ignore time travelling plot device it was totally boring and i could not have given a stuff what happened to either of them. have not got past first third of ukranian tractors either it is going back to library later.

i think sometimes publishers overplug mediocre books and people who wouldn't usually read books fall for the hype. sort of sundayreviewsupplementitis.
