I am reading Semidetatched by Griff Rhys Jones.

Very funny memoir. He is sopt on in his descriptions of all those ghastly teenage parties that I remember from my 'yoof'

A very funny book and I'd recoend it to all mumsnetters in their late 30s/40s. Or for younger MN to rad about what their parents got up to in the 60s and 70s!

An excellent read.

And you?

I've been trying to persevere with "we need to talk about Kevin" but i'm finding it tough going.

PoppiesMum · 08/02/2007 12:28

plummymummy - me too! Am trying to stick with it as I've been told it's a good read, but it is tough to get into.

emmatomATO · 08/02/2007 12:32

Yes, We do need to talk about Kevin!!! Blooming Henry. I got bored reading all the ins and outs of her letters and nearly gave up but I persevered and I've skimmed through the whole book ( I found the bits about her co-workers at the travelshop and her neighbours very tedious)and just picked up on her early years with Kevin.

I've skimmed all the way along to practically the last chapter where I'm about to find out the actual days events.

Very disappointed in it.

EnidLloydFoxe, I loved An Ice Cream War. It is better than most of William Boyd's later books imo. I read it when it was first published. Also enjoyed The Accidental.

On the way to the station this morning I realised I would probably finish my current book (Emergence, Syeve Johnson) before getting to work, because of the snow, so I picked up Terry Pratchett's Pyramids. Sure enough, I have made a good start on it already!

The undomesticated goddes by sohpe kinsella

Definitley recommend it

also rise and fall of yummy mummy!

christie1 · 08/02/2007 21:22

Just finished we need to talk about kevin because it is mentioned so often on mn. It was disturbing, not sure if I am better for having read it or not. I am reading ian rankins, "the naming of the dead" I am a big fan and it doesn't disappoint. ggirl, my friend recommended the lady in white by wilkie collins and I really like it. She bought me another of his as a gift, The lady and the law and it was even better.

Just finished Laura Blundy by Julie Myerson.
Loved it, but didn't understand the end. If anyone out there can enlighten me, please do (on another thread with spoiler alert?) Thanks.

Have just started Headlong, by Michael Frayn. It's intriguing, but I'm not keen on the protagonist (not sure if I'm supposed to be or not).

(Time traveler's wife is wonderful......)

newandimproved · 12/02/2007 13:06

I love Jodi Picoult. A very talented writer. All her books are exceptional!

Just finished A Million Little Pieces by James Frey. An astounding book that every adult should read I think. Extremely well written and a brilliant yet horrific insight into the world of drug rehab.

I normally go straight from one book to another but I had to have a breather after that one.

Somebody mentioned Insomnia by Stephen King. I'm also one that doesn't like all his books but I LOVED that one. As a person that easily loses sleep, that book felt altogether not entirely beyond the realms of possibility. Great book. Hope you enjoy it.

Music and Silence by Rose Tremain. I so loved The Way I Found Her and Restoration and this one is very good also, although it does skip around too much to make a good bedtime read.

just finished 'Keeping Faith' by Jodi Picoult and it was gripping. I couldn't put it down. Definitely read it.

taylormama · 12/02/2007 13:26

just finished eden close by Anita Shreeve - brilliant! And started Brightness Falls by Jay McInerney - very compulsive so far.

bluesky · 23/02/2007 13:18

Shantaram, it is FANTASTIC.

My book clubs favourite book so far.

Thick, but worth reading. Fantastic story

Fenella1 · 23/02/2007 13:22

The Egg Race by Polly Williams (her next book after The Rise and Fall of A Yummy Mummy). Very enjoyable

sandcastles · 23/02/2007 13:32

Miaou, The Dark Half is great. The film not so good, tho.

Insomnia was slow & a bit hard to get into for me. It beat me tho, which I never let a book do normally.

Reading Sushi for beginners, Marian Keyes. Only a few pages in, but OK.

Marscentio · 23/02/2007 13:35

Katherine Mansfield - Selected Stories.

I'm reading it for my course. Wonderful stories. Some make quite uncomfortable reading. All about pockets of time, so they are really rather timeless stories.

Would definitely recommend. Just finished reading Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Never read it before. It was amazing. Really loved it.

Supposed to be reading Unfortunate Son by Walter Mosely for my bookgroup. It's still waiting for me in the bookshop.

nikkie · 23/02/2007 15:09

The Adventure of English, The Biography of a Language by Melvyn Bragg. Tis most excellent!

midnightexpress · 23/02/2007 19:14

AntEater · 24/02/2007 18:36

Just finished May Contain Nuts.. surely a MUST for every parent??

roseylea · 24/02/2007 18:41

I'm reading the autobiography of Joy Carroll, one of the first female CofE vicars to be ordained in the UK, and the person on whom Dawn French's character in 'THe Vicar of Dibley' was closely modelled.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to all of MN - certainly some of my friends on the christian prayer thread (except perhaps those who don't agree with women priests!). Ore anyone interested in such things. It is interesting and inspiring, both from a religious and a feminist perspective.

doormat · 24/02/2007 18:42

true crime by colin wilson

it is about mass murderers
