Lemony Snickett encouraged reluctant reader to read. Is now enthusiastically working way through M Morpurgo, and aforesaid Alex Rider.

Glad you think Alex Rider ok for 8yo NAO - think my DS will enjoy it in a year or 2, just not sure he will know much about drugs by then (or am I completely naive?)

NotAnOtter · 30/01/2007 16:41

My kids had fisticuffs over Snickett books and i would bribe them with them - MUCH easier than HP and with more humour...quick and easy read i REALLY recommend them

Bink · 30/01/2007 16:42

I do think Lemony Snickett a bit off (but of course you're meant to, it's the USP, no?). I'm maybe precious though.

Mark Haddon's Agent Z books are nice.

Have just got bargain batch of Alex Rider to try ds (8 in April) with. Prof Branestawm is current favourite.

I am unsure what the problem is with Lemony - could soeone please explain....

Harry Potter got my 3 bigs reading...REALLY reading - they would carry them around etc ds2 read them at 6 but he was desperate to be like his siblings.
Its funny when they talk about it and totally mispronounce long words!!!!!

Ds loved grk thanks to your recommendation cod! Were you also responsible for Varjak Paw or was that Scummy?
Artemis Fowl is honestly much less fey than that rather idiotic blurb suggests.
We are currently enjoying very un-PC vintage Willard Price!

Ds (10) is obsessed by Alex Rider to the extent of being an obsessive fan of Anthony Horowitz now reading all his other stuff to late at night with a torch.

Young Bond books he found boring and couldn't be doing with it.

Go with Storm Breaker first. you need to read them in order.

marthamoo · 30/01/2007 19:37

Ds1 raced through Stormbreaker on holiday a couple of years ago - he would have been the same age then as your ds is, cod. He also read the next two (didn't enjoy them as much) but hasn't read any more. I felt they were a bit old for him then, tbh - I remember reading a bit of one to him and it was about Alex Rider and some girl - and they are being ballboys/girls at Wimbledon and he says something like "Alex hoped she was keeping her eye on the right balls" because she fancies one of the players. And I was a bit Which I know is stupid because I know he hears far worse at school

I got him a boxed set of Michael Morpurgo for Christmas and we are both loving them - I thought of you when I was trying to read (out loud) the last bit of Kensuke's Kingdom. You'll need a big box of tissues for Adolphus Tips - be warned.

The only MM one we've not liked thus far is My Friend Walter.

marthamoo · 30/01/2007 19:38

Oh and Young Bond - we read the first one (with eels) and I thought it was a bit gory, really. Also rather slow to get going.

All ds' friends loved the Alex Rider books - well before the film came out. I've never actually heard of a kid that liked Young Bond

marthamoo · 30/01/2007 20:24

No, he cried too. He's a big softie.

marthamoo · 30/01/2007 20:37

OK, I have asked the big softie himself which he prefers - Alex Rider or Young Bond:

"Alex Rider. Because Alex Rider is a proper spy for the Government and he has gadgets and real missions to go on and Young Bond is just an ordinary kid who has adventures."

So there you go
