I want proper escapism - a fantastical world with a romantic relationship as part of it too.

Anyone recommend anything?

Between Two Thorns/ Split Worlds series by Emma Newman

I was offered a free kindle book from Amazon. I picked the Robin Hobb book because I liked the cover Grin. It took me ages to get around to reading it and now I am hooked

LiveLifeWithPassion · 04/07/2016 07:48

Robin Hobb is going to be the first one I read because of so many raving in about it here Smile
I can't wait.

I'd recommend most/all of Patricia McKillip books, such as Winter Rose or The Changeling Sea. They are bit airy-fairy but they are also very beautifully written.

The Night Circus

Juliet marillier

Would recommended the Throne of Glass series as well, the author Sarah J Maas has another series called A Court of Thorns and Roses, the 2nd one has just come out.

Also Trudi Canavan and Robin Hobb and the Mortal Instruments series.

Robin Hobb's books are amazing, my absolutely favourite writer. Romantic does not come near to the emotions you will feel, she has nearly broken my heart a few times.
Then there are moments of pure joy.

I am so jealous of all of you discovering her work now, you have such treats in store.

(Can you tell that part of me thinks these books aren't fiction but reports from another universe?) 😉😊

And Jacqueline Carey, start at beginning with Kushiels dart. If you can get past the sex scenes these are an amazing series and have a love story at the heart of each one

VestalVirgin · 11/07/2016 20:37

I second the Patricia Briggs recommendation. Don't limit yourself on the Mercy Thompson series, though; she has also written some more traditional fantasy. I loved the Hurog duology.

If you really want to escape from the real world, I recommend:

A Brother's Price by Wen Spencer. A very traditional romance novel plot, but in a setting that is so unlike the real world that it doesn't matter one bit that the plot is predictable.

Ooh if you don't mind older books, then Sunrunners Fire by Melanie Rawn is fab, as are the follow ups to it.

HopefulHamster · 17/07/2016 00:16

Poison Study by Maria V Snyder is pretty good.

MaQueen · 17/07/2016 17:57

Terry Goodkind has written an excellent fantasy series (with romance) starting with 'Wizard's First Rule'. I've only read the first 4 but thoroughly enjoyed them all.

Melanie Rawn's Sunrunner books are also pretty good, though perhaps more aimed at teens?

TaraCarter · 17/07/2016 18:57

Be warned, Terry Goodkind's series seriously drops in quality later on- it's practically logarithmic.

Formulaic anti-commie prosetylising, gratuitous description of rape, ooh, the lovers are reunited, wasp-waistedly thin politics, someone gets raped, plot twist, cliff-hanger ending.

Congratulations, that's books 5-16 read for you!

TaraCarter · 17/07/2016 18:59

No's that's unfair of me. That's books 7 to 16 done for you.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 17/07/2016 19:01

Uprooted by Naomi Mobile is great - just finished it

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 17/07/2016 19:01

Ack autocorrect! Novik!

MaQueen · 17/07/2016 19:46

Ah, probably best I stopped at number 4 then Grin

LiveLifeWithPassion · 17/07/2016 22:48

Thank you for keeping this going. I've got my copy of the assassins apprentice now so I'll be starting that as soon as I finish what I'm currently reading.
Looking forward to checking out some more recommendations...

YY goldenapples uprooted is excellent. I wanted to read it again straight away. Really enjoyed it.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/07/2016 14:08

Another fan of Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Patrick Rothfuss and Kelley Armstrong here!

I have read some Robin Hobb, but only the ones about dragons in the mud. I loved the first couple and then felt they dipped in quality. But I shall try the Assassin ones on payday!

Melanie Rawn wrote the start of a great feminist series (the Exiles series) in about 1990 and I absolutely loved the first 2 books and devoured them. But she never finished it. I don't think she ever will now. It is really sad when that happens!

winniemcgoogan · 20/07/2016 14:13

I love kelley Armstrong books the werewolf ones are my fave but I also loved savannahs trilogy
