I want proper escapism - a fantastical world with a romantic relationship as part of it too.

Anyone recommend anything?

OP posts:

Robin Hobb The trader trilogy bit of romance bit of swashbuckling and the curious live ships

Caught11 · 03/07/2016 15:08

the "Night Circus" one of my favourite books.

The Imp series by Debra Dunbar is really good.

Ilona Andrew's Hidden Legacy is good too, although there's only one in the series so far (but Magic Bites, the Edge and the Innkeeper series should keep you going).

I love a good fantasy romance :) If you don't mind YA, then I'd recommend the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare (the first Mortal Instruments isn't great, but zip through it and they really improve).

If you like steampunk, then the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger is comedy/romance and has lots of bodice ripping and naked werewolves (in human form!)

DetestableHerytike · 03/07/2016 19:13

Outlander series.

Time travel romance rather than fantasy but the historic part is somewhat embellished and there's a bit of magic thrown in.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 03/07/2016 19:27

I'd second the Black Magician series and also Outlander.

The Harshini books by Jennifer Fallon are good too, there is an entertaining romance between two characters and also a more unexpected relationship which develops. Both are great fun to read. She also wrote the Lion of Senet series which has less romance but is a brilliant fantasy.

As mentioned above if you would also read YA, The Darkangel trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce is a stunning fantasy romance. I have read it over and over since I was twelve and the ending still makes me cry.

Robin Hobb The trader trilogy bit of romance bit of swashbuckling and the curious live ships
Do the assassin trilogy first and live ship traders is doubly romantic Smile

The Bllod Ties trilogy by Pamela Freeman is a good yarn,

TinklyLittleLaugh · 03/07/2016 21:32

Blood Ties

Badders123 · 03/07/2016 21:33

Outlander books?

doleritedinosaur · 03/07/2016 21:34

Definitely Robin Hobb, I love those books.

Raymond E Feist's Daughter of the Empire, first of 3 really good fantasy books with romance too.

David Edding's Belgariad & Malloreon features romance & if you get through them all Polgara the Sorceress is a good romantic fantasy book.

Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon which is King Arthur but I still rate a bit of fantasy.

Trudi Canavan, Jennifer Fallon, have quite a few series each.

Garth Nix' Abhorsen trilogy is a good read too.

Muskey · 03/07/2016 22:02

Felascloak I have only just discovered Robin Hobb does it matter which way round I read them will I still enjoy the assassin trilology.

PetraDelphiki · 03/07/2016 22:05

Janny Wurts Curse of the Mistwraith etc
Mercedes Lackey Magics Pawn/promise/price
Louise cooper initiate/outcast/master

TroysMammy · 03/07/2016 22:12

Downtime by Tamara Allen. Also second Jody Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's.

Rockelburger · 03/07/2016 22:25

The true blood books are great by charlaine Harris

ExitPursuedByABear · 03/07/2016 22:28

I am waiting patiently for the next Robin Hobb.

strawberrypenguin · 03/07/2016 22:37

I love David Eddings dinosaur he's my favourite author but I wouldn't say Belgariad fell under the 'fantasy romance' category. Fantasy yes, romance no. Yes there are relationships that develop over time but id say it was a coming of age series not a romantic one. Still recommend though Smile

Exit, the upside to this painful anticipation of book 3 is that at least we can assure ourselves that something good will happen in 2017, no matter what happens with the EU!

TaraCarter · 04/07/2016 00:06

Muskey, yes you will still enjoy the assassin trilogy if you read the liveships first. That's the way round I did it. But if you go assassin first, there is an extra level of appreciation.

Felascloak · 04/07/2016 00:12

Yes it'll be fine. There's just a particular scene in Live ship Traders which is very poignant when you've read Assassin. Might work the other way round if you keep your wits about you :)

BuggersMuddle · 04/07/2016 00:40

Loads of good ones mentioned on here already. Kim Harrison books are great (although romance isn't central) & love Ilona Andrews. I like Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniel & Innkeeper books best, but 'The Edge' is more romance focussed. Debra Dunbar probably not as well written IMO, but very funny.

I'd add:

Jeaniene Frost - Cat & Bones novels or Night Prince
Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
Karen Chance novels
Seanan McGuire - all good but InCryptid more romance focussed
Kevin Hearne - Iron Druid
Keri Arthur novels

If it's particularly romance you're after, the following are a bit Mills & Boon with supernaturals, but might be worth a look:

Nalini Singh - Archangel series
Thea Harrison - Elder Races

Very jealous of Muskey just starting out on Robin Hobb. I found her from a recommendation on here not that long ago and devoured them.
