Was absorbed by this book and couldn't put it down

mo3733 · 15/07/2016 15:35

this was gripping and i managed to read it in three days flat out. couldnt put it down.

jacqui5366 · 15/07/2016 16:56

Was completely hooked from the start.
The story is told from many viewpoints, and tells of Lily's escape from her hostile captor, and tense events following.
I stayed up until the wee small hoursbecause i kept reading "just one more chapter"! An amazing story and page turning until the end
I love reading psychological thrillers, as they take me to the part of my mind I dont use enough - my imagination, and quickly became absorbed in this gritty, intense story.
The story which explores abuse and complicated and often all too real relationships within families, was a real page turner which I couldn't put down.

This book is not not for all readers you have to have the mindset for tension and be in the mood for this, I would definitely recommend this book, and can't wait for the next releasefrom Hollie Overton.

Daphne01 · 15/07/2016 19:32

It kept me hooked to the very last page

sosotalk · 15/07/2016 21:54

Really gripping and eerie. I couldn't put it down.

Tean1 · 15/07/2016 23:13

This reminded me of the TV program Thirteen but was a bit more sinister. It was a good read.

emmafifema78 · 16/07/2016 12:41

I found "Baby Doll" a very intense read and gripping until the end! Although, it did have some similarities to Emma Donoghues "Room" which I also enjoyed reading, "Baby Doll" actually had more of toe curling, thrilling edge to it!

I liked the authors different views/perspectives from the individual characters, I think this makes it a stand out book and makes it more of an intriguing read. It gives you the feeling that you actually know the characters as people.

I love psychological thrillers and found this a gripping read from start to finish, but if this isn't your usual genre then you may need to be in the right frame of mind to get your head into it.

I give this book a solid 4/5

Marg2k8 · 16/07/2016 16:12

I don't think I would want to read this at bedtime.

tiddles12 · 16/07/2016 20:56

Totally gripping thriller- unable to put it down

GERTA · 16/07/2016 22:07

What a powerful read! One of the best psychological books I have ever read. Full of emotions and I have almost cried at every page! I liked the fact that the story was concentrated on the aftermaths of the abduction and the feelings and emotions of the victim and her family deaing with the story. I would strongly recommend it!

RACHELSMITH45 · 16/07/2016 22:28

This was a great read, I couldn't put it down!

sweetsomethings · 16/07/2016 23:25

Cailin7 · 18/07/2016 14:07

A gripping read throughout, however more unnerving than enjoyable.

shydaylily · 18/07/2016 15:16

looks a good read, will get it soon

JoCar72 · 18/07/2016 19:36

I was lucky enough to recieve a free copy so was really eager to get stuck into it straight away and give my review. The plot seemed to echo a lot with Brie Larson's Oscar winning 'Room' which was one of my fave films last year, but unfortunately 'Baby Doll' didn't really live up to those heady expectations. I was disappointed at just how long the plot took to get going and it felt slow and turgid at times - although on the positive side the ending was pretty satisfying and it had a fair share of twists and turns. A decent read but not one of my favourite thrillers. 6/10

LinForr · 18/07/2016 19:46

Very disappointing read. The characterisation is poor with everyone being the same person! It tackles a sensitive issue and examines in depth the aftermath of the kidnap and the effect on a range of characters, done well this would have been interesting. However this book reads more like a report with no clear protagonist. The authors knowledge of pts seems sketchy and there is a great deal of time spent on trivia. Not one I would recommend.

Misty9 · 19/07/2016 20:34

I too was a bit disappointed by this. I found the language unnecessarily flamboyant and the very short chapters made it quite difficult to get any rhythm going for me. I've given up about a third of the way through but having read some of the other reviews maybe I'll give it another go.

Room was a much better written book in my opinion.

buckley1983 · 20/07/2016 21:57

I wasn't lucky enough to win a copy - but desperate to read this one! Good review Libra101 :)

loubymain · 21/07/2016 13:44

Sounds great. Will have to get a copy

slev · 22/07/2016 08:48

Agree that the plot sounds like Room, but really it's a very different sort of book, just happens top start from a similar premise. This is much more about life after the escape, and more from an adult's viewpoint (to the extent that the child is pretty much ignored).

I did enjoy it, i thought it was a book which kept you engaged and was written in a way that made it relatively easy to read. The plot moved at a decent pace and from my perspective, pleasingly unpredictable so that you wanted to keep reading and find out what happened next.

I thought the different viewpoints were only semi-successful - writing it all in the third person meant that it was more a way of shifting the focus than actually hearing the different characters speak.

But overall, I would definitely recommend it - thanks for my copy!

alialiath · 22/07/2016 14:40

I thoroughly enjoyed Baby Doll which I found to be a thoroughly enthralling psychological thriller.

Lily Riser was abducted, mentally and physically tortured, until her escape with her daughter Sky three thousand one hundred and ten days later.
The narrative examines the impact the abduction had on not only Lily, but her twin sister Abby, her mother Eve, Sky and friends and family, and the consequences of Lily's return.
The story also explores the manipulative, charismatic character of the abductor Rick Hanson, and how he still tried to control people after he'd been arrested and was in jail.

A fantastic debut thriller, and I can hardly wait to see what Hollie Overton's got for us next.

daisyduke66 · 22/07/2016 16:15

I do enjoy a psychological thriller. This one is well written with plenty of gripping moments. Quite intense and well worth picking up.

cookie09 · 23/07/2016 14:17

Lily has been held captive and abused since she was 16. After 8 years she escapes with Sky, her daughter, who has never known freedom.

This book certainly hit the ground running! By the end of the first chapter my heart was racing.
Baby Doll explores how a crime affects not only the person involved but also their family and their friends.
I went through a range of emotions while reading this and finished it with tears in my eyes.
It also has one of the best and totally unexpected endings.
Fab read!
