I've just read this book on holiday, it's an easy read. You really feel that you get to know the characters and I loved the depiction of the close family ties. However, it is a bit predictable but I still wanted to finish reading it.

ccp · 06/08/2016 12:45

Oh wow. Just finished my mumsnet copy of Black Rabbit Hall. Absolutely wonderful. Made me cry on several occasions and I got utterly lost in the story and, more importantly, the Alton children's personalities and lives. Beautiful writing too - love Eve's unusual use of words to add colour and depth to description. Will definitely be reading her next book and off to lend my copy out. Thank you!

kimmie67 · 07/08/2016 08:10

Thank you for my copy, I thought it started really well although I wasn't as interested in the present day/Lorna side of the story I enjoyed learning about the Alton family and thought it was well written and flowed well keeping my interest. However it seemed to go off a bit towards the end and I found myself losing interest a little, it seemed too contrived and although I appreciated the happy ending I didn't share any real affinity with Lorna so I didn't really care what happened to her! Overall though I found it well written, a good holiday read.

susanterblanche · 08/08/2016 09:21

Thank you so much for my copy, I really enjoyed it! It reminded me a bit of Kate Morten. It was a very easy read, even though it was quite sad.

Sabra · 08/08/2016 20:51

I'm really enjoying this book, not quite finished it but it has me hooked. What I particularly love is the depiction of Cornwall, having been on holidays to Cornwall before (but not this year), it's really transporting me there! I'll certainly be looking out for more by Eve Chase based on this book.

FoxInABox · 09/08/2016 08:09

Half way through and really enjoying it so far. I am a huge fan of Kate Morton and this is very similar, so it's right up my street. I started off not caring too much about Lorna but this has definitely improved, it's fascinating to imagine rifling through an old house. If you love old big houses and family histories then this is the book for you.

PodeTheBogeySlayer · 09/08/2016 08:24

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it had just the perfect mix of predictability and twists, making you question yourself to keep you hanging. I enjoyed finding out about the historical characters and the present day characters were engaging enough that you weren't skipping those pages to get to the others! Parts of the ending were a bit twee but who doesn't love a happy ending? Have now passed on to my mother-in-law and have a friend lined up once she's finished!

Teresainwirral · 09/08/2016 15:47

I loved this book and read through it in a couple of days on holiday. The ending had me in tears. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the setting, and it made me wonder about my boy/girl twins whether they have any 'knowing' thoughts about the other.

1inamillion · 09/08/2016 20:15

Thrilled to win a copy of the book. Took it away with me on a short break. Agree that it was rather dark and Daphne du Maurier- ish but I rather like that. Not keen on the time changes but they were well handled. The characters were interesting especially the children, Amber and Toby in particular. Lorna however was shallow and superficial. Hard to believe this was a debut novel.

Penygirl · 10/08/2016 11:24

I'm only half way through and I'm enjoying the story so far. I tend to like the chapters about the sixties more than the modern ones but it is intriguing to make the connections between the two. I'm at the point where Lorna has gone to Black Rabbit Hall for the weekend and she has asked Mrs Alton about the family. It leaves me wondering where are all the 'children' now?

buddles · 10/08/2016 13:30

Having just finished 'The Lake House' by Kate Morton, I went straight into 'Black Rabbit Hall' be Eve Chase - I have only read the first few chapters so far, and found it a little slow to get into at first but the action soon kicked off, and now I'm hooked! I love books set in Cornwall and to me this is reminiscent of Kate Morton and Daphne DuMaurier. I don't get a lot of time to kick back and relax with a book but this one has got me gagging for my next bit of 'me' time to see where the story goes! Thanks again to Mumsnet books for my copy x

melanieb32 · 11/08/2016 09:57

I finished this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it, the story flows, you can't help but love the characters and I constantly had to keep page turning as I needed to know what was going to happen next, would happily read something by else by the Sam author.

imacmum · 11/08/2016 14:23

Was lucky enough to win a copy of this book and saved it to read on my holiday. So glad I did, couldn't put it down, went from villa to beach to car to villa reading it all the way. Enjoyed the entwined stories through the different time periods aand how the obvious great love between the siblings was shown, which enabled them to get through the tragedies (just!) and the twist of the ending which I hadn't foreseen. Look forward to more stories from this author. A perfect holiday read!

FoxTeaParty · 11/08/2016 16:47

I received a copy of this book and I was looking forward to getting started. Unfortunately I have really struggled to get into it and haven't got further than the 1st quarter. If a book pulls me in i usually finish it very quickly.

I did like the way the story was going but I can't put my finger on it. I will try again and hope like a previous review, I will start to enjoy it.

Jouls · 12/08/2016 10:08

I received a copy of the book. Not the usual book I would pick up off the shelf but have really enjoyed it. The characters were more complex than I thought they would be but a nice easy read although I found it rather emotional!

llewejk · 12/08/2016 21:15

I finished the book last night. I really enjoyed this book and thought it was very well written. I often don't like books that skip back and forth from the past and present day, but was able to keep up! I was certainly hooked in from about halfway, and couldn't wait to start the next chapter. Each chapter I was left wanting more. Romance and tragedy but a great read. I did predict the ending, but wasn't disappointed.

Penygirl · 13/08/2016 22:50

Had time to finish the book today. Really enjoyed it and although I had suspected the ending at one point, I had been thrown off the scent earlier on in the book.

like7 · 14/08/2016 15:09

I'm not an avid reader but am trying to read more. Well this book left me wondering why I don't read more! I really enjoyed it and kept wanting more time to go off and read the next bit. The end of chapters left me in suspense and wanting to carry on reading more. I loved the characters, so enthralled by them from the beginning. The setting of the hall was brought alive so well. I predicted several things but felt the author was often teasing you with guessing the outcome - from the very first page in fact. There was one part that I would have liked to have understood more (3rd child near the end) I look forward to the author's next book. Thank you so much for the free book - I loved it!

Andrews55 · 14/08/2016 16:57

I absolutely loved this book. I couldn't put it down, and I didn't want it to end! It is a very atmospheric first novel, which is extremely well written. There are two storylines - one set in the past (Amber's story), where the reader gets to know the children, the old house, the parents; and the second, set some 30 years later (Lorna's story), when a young woman is seeking a wedding venue and is drawn to Black Rabbit Hall......
I love books with parallel storylines, especially when there is a mystery, so I was hooked from the start. It is a wonderful saga of family life, tragedy and love. Everything unfolds as the plot goes back and forth, leaving the reader breathless at times. I would recommend this book to all my friends.

over40andmumtoone · 15/08/2016 19:36

I haven't finished this book yet, but I'm loving it and have no idea how it will finish. Love books that flick from one time period to another and focus on different characters and their stories. A great read

Charlene1 · 15/08/2016 21:30

Thank you for sending me this book - I haven't finished it yet, but I am finding it "gripping" and like the way that it is set in two time periods - I can't wait to find out how it comes together at the end! :)

janeyf1 · 17/08/2016 15:46

A wonderful book, I enjoyed reading it in the sun last weekend. It kept me busy! A darker story than I would normally choose to read but I was impressed although slightly disappointed at the end.

tigerdog · 17/08/2016 16:59

I did enjoy this, good holiday reading and not too taxing. Loved the Cornish setting, thought it was very atmospheric. The ending was all rather neat and tidy but I quite liked that given the tragic events of earlier in the book. Like others have said, the parallel story lines work well to build the story from different perspectives and time periods to the present day conculsion.

All in all a decent story and a good read.

hv35 · 21/08/2016 16:25

Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. An interesting read, which I found hard to get into to begin with, although the suggestive plot did keep me reading! I was reminded of Miss Haversham when faced with Mrs Alton (the second) which I thought was good. The latter half of the novel was more enjoyable for me as the stories started to link together, although I was slightly disappointed that I guessed the ending way before it was revealed! I agree with a previous comment on here about a Gothic atmosphere and would recommend this book to anyone.

FoxInABox · 27/08/2016 15:01

Absolutely loved this book, very happy to have found a new author to follow- can't wait for more
