I have just read the first two chapters and am intrigued to find out what has happened at Black Rabbit Hall! Thanks for the book!

jsf1959 · 23/07/2016 20:48

I received the book thank you. I started to read it last night. very easy to read and pick up the story right away. I will see how the story pans out as I only read the first 10 pages.

Larnipoo · 24/07/2016 00:29

This is a beautiful seductive and atmospheric read. Black Rabbit Hall is the imposing dilapidated home of the Alton children and their parents.

Told within two timelines, the first being of the four children, whose lives are changed when a tragic accident takes the life of their mother, and the second some thirty years later with Lorna trying to find the perfect venue for her wedding.

I love books with Cornwall as the setting. My childhood was set in Cornwall and reading about this beautiful and magical place always makes me feel like I am going home. Eve Chase has captured the place perfectly and her debut novel is one that is brilliantly written and stylishly plotted.

I didn't want to finish this tale, and while I usually read a book in one sitting, I deliberately took longer with this one and was sad to finish it. I really can't wait for Ms Chase's next offering.

Looby4 · 24/07/2016 09:04

I have received the book - many thanks. I am really enjoying it. I love Cornwall, and this novel depicts it beautifully. The two timelines are equally engaging and it is a very gripping read. It's a perfect summer read and a good Book Group novel if you're looking for something light. Thank you for the book.

lesley37 · 24/07/2016 10:12

I really love this book it stirs your soul, beautifully written with wonderful descriptions and interesting characters. The plot has some great twists I was truly hooked.
I will be recommending this book to all my friends, read it you wont be disappointed.

Mozarmstrong · 24/07/2016 16:57

Well to be honest not sure I found the first half ok then second half a bit strange I love my reading so will still tell my friends it's a good read then see what they say

MrsRedWhite214 · 24/07/2016 21:45

I'm not keen on Lorna's story by the Alton's tale is intriguing. Not sure if I would recommend it to anyone yet, but I still need to finish the book to decide properly. It seems like a standard summer read but probably not my usual choice.

MrsRedWhite214 · 26/07/2016 21:30

I kept reading but just couldn't get into the book. sorry, but this one just isn't for me

Lindsaym1983 · 27/07/2016 11:51

I have just finished this book and thought that it was the perfect holiday read. I was instantly drawn into the story and liked that the tale skipped between two different characters and generations. I loved the twists and turns although I kind of guessed the ending pretty early on. I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was well written and easy to read

Dizzybet74 · 27/07/2016 18:51

Loved this book. I generally enjoy similar types set in dual time and this one got the switching moments just right and I liked that the 2 timelines eventually joined. Almost all events I did find predictable but in a way that kept me reading as I wanted to know how these occurrences would come about. Great holiday read & I'll be passing it onto my mum as I know its the kind of genre she also enjoys.

4isplenty · 28/07/2016 20:06

I received this book to review, my views are my own :)
I was not sure when I began this story how much I was going to like it as I felt like it was a story similar to many I have read, however I was immediately drawn in, the two stories were engaging and filled with details to paint the picture in the minds eye. I had no problem in picking up the story where I left it as the flow of the writing was perfect.
I thoroughly recommend this to anyone who wants to add a new author to their shelves and I will personally be looking forward to the next book on release :)

Tigerlily13 · 30/07/2016 12:16

Thanks for the book! I loved it and couldn't put it down. The bittersweet ending left me in tears. Definitely one to recommend.

Londonmummy1972 · 31/07/2016 10:22

I haven't got very far with this book as I am finding it so dull...! I hope the pace speeds up, it's so slow...I am sure, judging by the reviews above, it will, I just need to stick with it.

princessgray · 01/08/2016 06:01

I really enjoyed this. I realise it has been compared to work by other writers, but I didn't really find this, and enjoyed the story and writing on it's own merits. I found it very easy to read and towards the end I was desperate to find out what was happening. A great read, thank you.

Anj123 · 01/08/2016 15:27

I have now finished this book and although I guessed what happened I still enjoyed it. A good easy read for the summer. Thanks for letting me be part of this!

MargoReadbetter · 02/08/2016 00:45

Thank you for the book. I'm sorry to say I struggled to finish it. It has some good characterisation, is well plotted and some of the descriptions are beautiful. The love story sounds credible and I hadn't read such a young perspective in a while. I would have loved the house though not so much as to sacrifice so much for it (as Hugo and Caroline did). Different times, different responsibilities.

It took much too long to really get something going. The Lorna/Jon sections were a bit 'filler'. For some reason I really disliked Jon. The ending a bit far fetched and too neat. I cried so must have been invested in the characters by then. I read it on holiday and it was just right for that.

Radley1 · 02/08/2016 13:11

I won this book on the giveaway. To be honest this isn't a book I'd have
picked up on the shelves but I was pleasantly surprised . The dark secrets
and sadness I felt were part of life sometimes and although slightly predictable at places still read well. Great first book and will look forward to more hopefully.

SammyF1976 · 03/08/2016 06:38

An easy read and one to take on holiday purely for that. I liked it but it isn't a book I would say I loved. Guessed the ending quite early on in the story so didn't grip me massively. But all in all a fairly enjoyable read.

areyoutheregoditsmemargaret · 03/08/2016 12:32

I really liked this book. I found it incredibly atmospheric, description in books usually bores me, but Chase built up such a convincing image of Cornwall I felt I was actually there, inhaling sea spray. The love story - no spoilers - was very sexy, tense and ultimately moving. Lorna's present-day story also had me gripped. There were many archetypal fairy tale tropes, like crumbling buildings and wicked stepmothers, but the overall sense was something quite modern and unusual. Really looking forward to the author's next offering.

Emmad1977 · 03/08/2016 16:06

Absolutely loved this...thank you for my copy. The prologue got me guessing right from the start and it certainly didn't disappoint. The plot was easy to follow and really drew me in, leaving me wondering why Lorna was so interested in Black Rabbit Hall. From half way through onwards, I couldn't put it down and was thankful it was the summer holidays so I was able to devour the second half in one sitting. I would love to find out what happened next....

If you haven't read Black Rabbit Hall already then you really must. Enjoy!

Belo · 03/08/2016 16:16

Thank you for my copy of this book mumsnet.

I read the prologue and the first two chapters this morning and I've put it on 'Save as a beach read' pile for later this summer. I think it's going to be an easy read, and fairly gripping. I am immediately intrigued as to what the connection is going to be between Lorna and Amber. And, what was seen in the prologue. In the meantime I'm going to go back to finishing Judy Blume ready for next week. But, that's a different thread Grin

kerryb1 · 04/08/2016 18:16

Just received my copy, having read all the other reviews can't wait to get started.

Newes · 04/08/2016 18:24

I read this last year on holiday and was fairly gripped by it, although some parts I did skim past to get back to the family's story.
Looked last week to see if the author had written any more since as would be interested to see how she develops as an author.

melanieb32 · 04/08/2016 20:23

Am loving Black Rabbit Hall, it had become my guilty pleasure, I look forward to picking it up in an evening for a couple of chapters. I love how it moves from past to present, I'm fond of the characters and the speed at which the story is told, each chapter leaves you wanting more, it is a definite page turner and will be a book that is passed around friends and family.

queenoftheschoolrun · 04/08/2016 22:25

Thanks for my free copy. I enjoyed the book and sped through it in just a few evenings. The present day characters were a little flat but the story of the original family at the Hall was intense and thrilling. The writing was reminiscent of Kate Morton who is a favourite of mine and I look forward to the author's next book.
