Loved Pride & Prejudice ever since I read it for my English Literature GCSE (TOOO many years ago now!). I loved the language, the romance & the humour in it. Was gripped & have been ever since. I have also watched every film & TV series since!

It's hard to imagine the literary landscape without 'Pride and Prejudice': Austen developed a perfect plot form. It's so good that people have been compelled to write it again, and again, and again.

Love, money, and acute social analysis, all delivered in brilliant prose. And it's funny.

I've read it several times now and love how easy it is to immerse yourself in it. I particularly love the fact that, each time I read it, I notice more, whether at the level of language construction or detail/nuance in the content. Somehow, it seems to mature with me. Or perhaps, I grow into it.

I am rather excited by the sound of Curtis Sittenfield's book. Hope I win a copy. Smile

Givemecoffeeplease · 18/04/2016 18:55

Because you are gunning for an unlikeable character - much like in Emma. But she's also funny. And naughty. (And not as annoying as Emma). And Lydia is fab. And Darcy is hot n haughty.

Basically because it's a beautiful love story and under my hard and bitter shell, I'm a softy!

Iwillnotbekeptdown · 18/04/2016 19:01

I love p&p because lizzie is strong and witty and someone to embrace, Darcy sees her spirit and admires her for it even there are a few push me pull me arguments. You can cheer for her as a modern lady but you can enjoy him as a gentleman without the dish rag soppiness. Any story that can successfully emulate the same passion, humour and vitality gets a place on my bookshelf.

riverwell · 18/04/2016 19:09

I love that although P&P is written in a different era, today's reader can totally relate to many of the issues and dilemas still occuring to lives now. Amazing really.

forkhandles4candles · 18/04/2016 19:15

I love the satire and irony, as well as the window onto a world's now gone but recognisable in parts.

thecatfromjapan · 18/04/2016 19:17

I'm going to be honest. I've thought about it, and I realise that I wasn't entirely truthful in that last post.

One of the reasons I love P and P is that I know that it will all end well - so I can really enjoy the narrative/journey on the way. I think that's one of the things I really like about P and P - and all the books/films that follow the same plot device.

It's an odd thing but I find that with some books, I have to race through the story - not really getting a chance to really enjoy the journey - because my heart is in my mouth worrying that it's all going to be awful at the end. With P and P - and others like it - I love the fact that I can really take my time and enjoy all the twists and turns and humour and commentary. It's like the difference between having grab a sandwich and being able to sit down and enjoy a meal. Smile

CountessOfStrathearn · 18/04/2016 19:38

thecat, I know what you mean, so I've started reading the last few chapters of a book or reading the recaps of a tv programme online before. I actually find myself enjoying reading/watching it much more as a result!

I love Lizzie but I was recently asked which character I'd like to have a cup of tea with and it actually occurred to me that I have a great fondness for Charlotte Lucas. She's very perceptive and thoughtful and, while I couldn't have married Mr Collins, she goes into with her eyes open and for (at the time) very sensible reasons. I think I would enjoy being her friend and getting her opinion on things!

alialiath · 18/04/2016 19:38

I love Pride and Prejudice because it gives insight into how the landed gentry thought and acted in the the early 19th century, and how they dealt with issues like society marriage, education, upbringing, and morality, all the issues we still face today.

We can't forget Elizabeth and Darcy's relationship. Elizabeth with her jealousy, and Darcy with his pride, and how they both overcame them when they fell in love.

StDogolphin · 18/04/2016 19:48

I love P&P because its subtle and witty and so very very clever!

LucyInTheSkyWithDonuts · 18/04/2016 19:53

I love P&P because it is a wonderfully written timeless story. So many other novels owe it an enormous debt (sometimes acknowledged, sometimes not!) It's one of the novels I cannot wait to introduce to my daughter when she is a little older :)

asuwere · 18/04/2016 19:54

I love the satire, the mystery and the love; it really pulls you in and you really hope to find out more and as you do, hope that it will all resolve so they live happily ever after. Even if you kinda know it will be a happy ending, there is still the anticipation that there might not be! (Even on my 4th/5th read, I still worry, they might not figure it out this time Blush)
Although it is a different era, some of it is still relevant nowadays which is why it is still enjoyed now.

jammy388 · 18/04/2016 19:55

Elizabeth Bennett is such an attractive heroine - brave, loving and funny - I really want her to live happily ever after.

vic1981 · 18/04/2016 19:58

My favourite book. Love many things about the book but particularly the light verbal sparring between Darcy and Elizabeth, and the odious Lady Catherine de Burgh.

LIZS · 18/04/2016 20:04

Studied for O level and degree. It is so carefully constructed and the moment of the first proposal gives me goose pimples every time I read it. Lizzie seems so normal, her spiritedness transcends time to make her character still relevant and familiar.

MrsDallowaySaid · 18/04/2016 20:05

I love P&P because it taught teenage me to speak disparagingly of people without them quite knowing I am. It taught me fabulous words like insufferable and odious and esteem. I also love Curtis Sittenfeld, American Wife is one of my favourite books. I'd love to win!

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 18/04/2016 20:22

I've loved P&P since I studied it for A level English many years ago. I have fond memories of reading the part of Lady Catherine aloud in class and having great fun! We were given homework to read up to a certain point over the Easter holiday but I was enjoying it so much that I finished it. The whole book is sparkling with wit and great characters and many many quotable lines.

(Of course the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth and the later film have added to it's appeal. We are holidaying in Derbyshire this year (like Lizzie!) and I'm hoping to visit several of the places which have appeared (Belton House, Lyme Park, Chatsworth!) )

ShatnersBassoon · 18/04/2016 20:28

I like Pride and Prejudice because I studied it for A level, so it reminds me of very happy times.

Mr Collins is my favourite character. I'd love to see how he's portrayed in a modern retelling Grin

FeelingSmurfy · 18/04/2016 20:41

Because Mrs Bennett is such a fantastic character Smile

glenka · 18/04/2016 20:44

It is such a classic book but you can still learn from it today.

Cel982 · 18/04/2016 21:05

I have been looking forward to this book since I first heard about it last year! One of my favourite ever authors (if you haven't read Prep or American Wife, you're missing out) reimagines one of my favourite classic books - bliss.

foxessocks · 18/04/2016 21:08

I love it because it's funny and it's romantic and it's just so wonderfully readable.

Cantwait4summer · 18/04/2016 21:22

It's such a good old fashioned proper true romance that we all hope for in reality. Elizabeth is truly a good role model to aspire to - strong willed & stick to her beliefs and follows her heart at same time. And of course love love Darcy ..a girl.can dream.eh ! X

barricade · 18/04/2016 21:30

Absolute classic of a book. Strong female main character, a blueprint for the modern-day woman. The dashing Mr D'Arcy, many women agree a favourite out of many a male literary character. Turns and twists, the comic relief, the 'villain/s', great movie adaptation - brilliant.
