I really wanrt to find a book I read as a young girl -it was a pony/horse book, maybe by one of the usual pony book authors but not sure - group of children go on holiday to remote house in Wales- very bleak and no food etc...any ideas -or failing that, any suggestions of authors I could trawl through- thanks !

I googled that! See the quote marks

KezzaG · 09/01/2007 15:57

Oh I missed that. Shame, I quite liked the idea of you being a Ruby expert.

binker · 09/01/2007 15:57

Does anyone actually own the Secret of Pony Pass ? thanks for sending the e-bay link quootiepie,it didn';t seem immediately familiar - I remember a lot of Welsh names and the children finding flour to make dampers, though I hadn't a clue what they were. Darrelrivers - are you a St Clares girl or Mallory Towers ?

I've read the books over and over and over... but it's been a few years now

Lucycat · 09/01/2007 15:58

No wonder we were all confused!!

How do you like this website? cool eh?

DarrellRivers · 09/01/2007 15:59

Mallory Towers, I think the twins were at St Clares

KezzaG · 09/01/2007 16:00

Oh Lucycat with this website you are really spoiling us (ferero roche style accent)

I am in pony heaven.

Does anyone else remember Black Boy being called Danny in the very first book? Maybe it was in the first edition before she became successful and the whole series developed? I spent hours puzzling over it.

Wasn't Rapide a more upmarket pony than Black boy?

Quootiepie · 09/01/2007 16:02

ah, excellent Lucy! Forgot about Pedro....

Which reminds me, I have one more book in the Jinny series to read, as I never found out how she got the pony called Easter.

binker · 09/01/2007 16:03

Lordy, what have I started ?! Do you think little girls these days are interested in horses in the way we were ? (I don't count My Little Pony)

Quootiepie · 09/01/2007 16:03

Was called Patchy ...

Danny does make me think of something though.... maybe another horse was called Danny?

KezzaG · 09/01/2007 16:09

right Im off to practice my rising trot on the arm of the sofa. I will use a tea towel for a saddle and a belt for the reigns. Must dig out my cycle helmet as a riding hat.

Blu · 09/01/2007 16:10

Oh, Patchy? yes, that rings a bell....did Jill change his name as part of the story, or was it just an unexplained editorial decision?

Quootiepie · 09/01/2007 16:10

list of pony books Binker - you might recognise one

Kezza _ I used to practise rising trot on the arm of the sofa!!!

Quootiepie · 09/01/2007 16:11

She changed his name. Can't remember why. Just think she didn't like it

Lakota · 09/01/2007 16:17

Wasn't Jill's second horse called Twoy? Pronounced 2-ie as he had two white socks or something?

JanH · 09/01/2007 16:37

Black Boy's name was changed in later editions for PC reasons

2nd pony was Rapide (he was a poser IIRC )

RustyBear · 09/01/2007 16:56

In the first copy of 'A pony for Jill' that I read (about 1964 iirc), the farmer who sold him to her called him Blackie, but she didn't like that & called him Black Boy. Later there was an edition where he was drawn as a piebald & the farmer called him Patchy, which she changed (I think again to Black Boy, but I'm not really sure because I only read that one in as charity shop while I was waiting for someone)
Later still they got all PC about it & he was called something I don't remember - I think Best Boy came even later- but I wouldn't be surprised if there was another edition somewhere (maybe one from another country) where he was Danny.

katelyle · 10/01/2007 06:53

Binker, I have a pony mad 11 year old who loves a lot of the old horsy books I loved. Some of them are too wordy and have too many descriptions for her to enjoy reading herself, byt we have them as bedtime stories. Monica Edwards is brilliant to read aloud, and it takes me right back! She adores Jill - and I'm always scouring the charity shops for more!

JanH · 10/01/2007 09:44

Black Boy was called Danny Boy before Best Boy kicked in - I definitely have a book with Danny Boy in, but it's one I got much more recently - no idea where it is though.

tenbygirl · 10/01/2007 12:45

Is it; We Met Our Cousins by Joanna Cannan
But its Scotland not Wales.

RustyBear · 10/01/2007 15:05

Thinking back, I think Danny Boy must have been the 'replacement name' for Patchy ie for the piebald version. I thought Best Boy didn't sound very familiar

binker · 10/01/2007 15:54

tenbygirl, it was definitely Wales because of the Welsh names - can't remember what they were, but they were intriguing to me !

turquoise · 10/01/2007 17:56

Was Joanna Cannan the Pullein-Thompson's mother? Definitely the mother of some pony author, but I can't remember who exactly.

nikkie · 11/01/2007 18:22

I've got loads of these put away for dds (prob will be dd2 , dd1 says its too cold and dirty to go riding!) I gave them to my cousin when I 'grew' out of them, she left home a few months ago and gave me them back
