I know this has probably been done before but dd is about to turn 2. She has loads of books but I'd like to get her 1 or more for her birthday (amongst other things) but need inspiration.

Thanks (might not be back to check this thread till later but I will !)

DS loves Oh Dear by Rod Campbell (who also wrote Dear Zoo).

He would have that book every night before bed given half a chance. I even hid it amongst the other books on his shelves but it took him all of 10 seconds to find it!

Altogether now....No eggs here...Oh Dear!

Wheelybug · 07/01/2007 10:43

thanks Betty - will have a look at that DD has loved Dear Zoo since she was tiny....

know what you mean about hiding books though - dd's favourite recently has been a Noah's Ark book illustrated by Lucy Cousins (of Maisy fame) and it takes ages to read as she has to name/point to all the animals so we often try and hide it () but she always finds it or demands it until we get it out.

the gruffalo, we have to read it to him every night, we even tried hiding it, but he hunted it down. he follows the rhyme with us too. his 2nd fav is peepo

BettySpaghetti · 07/01/2007 10:46

Oh,forgot to say that Each Peach Pear Plum is another favourite here. DS likes looking for the characters.

Wheelybug · 07/01/2007 10:48

Lissie/Betty - thanks, we already have those 3 - great books though.... I love the Ahlberg books - will have a look at some of the others.

the gruffalos child? not as good as the 1st but still nice with all the same characters

arfishy · 07/01/2007 11:01

The Bing Bunny series. My 2 year old loved these. You can get them on Amazon and some of the bigger chains.

JARM · 07/01/2007 11:01

each peach pear plum was a firm favourite, as was The Very Hungry Catterpillar (sp?)

Now it is I want my Potty and I want my Dummy - both little princess books.... she is driving me mad lol!

franch · 07/01/2007 11:05

Anything by Trish Cooke (I also love reading these, which helps!). So Much is brilliant; also Full Full Full of Love, and Zoom!.

Wheelybug · 07/01/2007 17:02

Thanks everyone I shall have a look at Amazon at all of these !

DD's is currently The Tiger Who Came to Tea but she does go through phases.

RosaLuxembourg · 07/01/2007 17:31

Any of Helen Cooper's Baby who wouldn't go to bed was a big fave with all of mine as was Tatty Ratty and her more recent ones like Pumpkin Soup are great too.
Lucy Cousins is great for that age too obviously for the lovely clear bright illustrations.
Look for Sandra Boynton she is American but you can get her books here - Snoozers is excellent and there is one about hippos that is really good too.
Also on the American theme, Goodnight Moon has been a classic there for 50 years and should be more well-known here too and The Runaway Bunny - will go and check author's name in a minute.
You probably have Helen Oxenbury and Shirley Hughes stuff already but if not then check them out.

My ds's favourites are:
The Gruffalo
The Very Hungry Caterpilla
Each Peach Pear Plum
Oh Dear

He likes ones with a few lines on each page and a bit of a story - though he doesn't always have the concentration span for them. He is also really getting into the Thomas the Tank Engine books, but the Old Bear books (that we keep getting given ) are still to long for him.

Wheelybug · 07/01/2007 20:02

ooh the tiger who came to tea - had forgotten about that one. Will also take a look at all the others, as haven't heard of some of them ! Thanks to everyone.

Shosha - the book people are fab, use them quite a lot too.

DS loves Daddy on the Moon by Cressida Cowell, particularly good as dh often doesn't get home until after bedtime. Also there's one at my parents house called Someone Bigger that he likes to read over and over.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 07/01/2007 20:09

Any of the Katie Morag books - both mine loved these from an early age because there was so much to look at in the beautiful illustrations. DD still likes them because she listens to the story now too.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 07/01/2007 20:10

Oh and Hairy Maclary/Slinki Malinki - love those myself

clayre · 07/01/2007 20:14

'we're going on a bear hunt' is a great book my dd was only 2 when she got it and is nearly 4 and can read it to us now

I reall shouldn't have started this thread - I want to buy all the books NOW !!

Like the idea of Daddy on the moon - dh is never home before bed and it might be more exciting for her to think he's on the moon than stuck in an office in the city .

Margaret Wise Brown wrote Goodnight Moon
here it is do check it out, all my DDs loved it at age 2.

Aloha · 07/01/2007 23:26

My dd is not quite two yet, and her favourites are still Maisy and Poppy Cat. She also loves 'reading' her brother's Mr Men books (usually upside down).
