HHas anyone read this? I stayed awake to read it, it was so gripping! I literally didn't put it down! It's 99p on Google play books I think, not sure about elsewhere and I definitely recommend it.

It's about a couple who's friends and family think are perfect, he's a lawyer who helps abused women, she's the perfect cook and homemaker. They're always together....... they're ALWAYS together. It's disturbing and chilling but it's the best book I've read in a while.

Any recommendations for anything based on my love of this are welcome!

I got the impression at the end that the helpful friend had seen them?

Sallystyle · 19/02/2016 13:23

I think that was after he died?

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 19/02/2016 13:47

Feenie, the kind worth killing is excellent!

The paintings were explained away as he went down to that room before appearing in court to sort of psyche himself up to win seeking the damage that the men he's fighting against have caused.

Seeing not seeking!

I think the police thought the door handle was taken away specifically so he could commit suicide in there nit that bit never had a handle.

Not that it never had a handle! Sorry for all the typos!

Was just in Waterstones looking at The Widow, which looked promising. Anyone read it?

Panicmode1 · 19/02/2016 16:39

I read it last night - I thought it was ok but there were lots of holes. I agree with the poster upthread who found her giving up her job and agreeing to live somewhere she'd never seen very odd.....but for a debut novel and something to read during the small hours whilst suffering from insomnia, it was good!

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 19/02/2016 17:00

I enjoyed the widow, I haven't read anything that's similar but the ending was weird from what I remember, it didn't make me regret reading it though.

I've just started How to be a good wife, I'm not finding it so easy to get into.

Feenie · 19/02/2016 23:41

Long.time since I read it so don't remember if it was like that for me.

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 20/02/2016 00:14

I haven't started that yet LuckyDuck. Let us know if it gets any better!

I've just finished it. It's worth reading. I'd be interested to see what you think of the ending if you read it.

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 20/02/2016 13:16

I've downloaded it so I'll give it a go and let you know what I think.

Just finished it and I really liked it. Glad there was no really shocking twist as normally you can see those a mile off (other than in I Let You Go, which genuinely made me go Shock).

Only thing I was left wondering about is what he was getting up to in Thailand? He said you can pay for things their that you can't get here? At that point I either thought he was gay (which was addressed in the book) or a paedophile and that's why he wanted Millie so much. But then that doesn't fit with the rest of the book?

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 21/02/2016 13:11

He was paying prostitutes money to be 'allowed' to beat/torture them rather than sex.

I'll add I let you go to my list!

Thanks for the recommendations in your link OP. I just finished Before We Met and enjoyed it.

LunaLovebad · 21/02/2016 19:20

I read The Widow a few weeks ago. I liked it, though it was one of those books where I didn't really like any of the characters.

On the basis of recommendations above I've just finished In The Darkest Corner, which was absolutely brilliant. Totalling chilling, and kept me gripped right to the end. I didn't want it to finish.

I also wondered why we never got an answer about what he'd been doing in Thailand. the author made so much of it, then never explained it. Annoying.

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 21/02/2016 21:17

I've read before we met but I can't remember much about it so I might re read!

I agree Luna, I didn't like any of the characters either! Into the darkest corner is great!

Give Philippa Gregory's Little House a go.

Sallystyle · 21/02/2016 22:29

Sorry.. The Little House

AndYourBirdCanSing · 22/02/2016 00:04

Love the little house and the poison tree.

Try 'Cuckoo' by Julia Crouch. Also look at Paula Daly and 'Magpies' by Mark Edwards is good

Cheesymonster · 22/02/2016 15:16

I was going to suggest Magpies, loved that.

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 22/02/2016 16:11

I love little house and magpies! Magpies actually really stuck with me because I live in a flat Grin

I'll have a look for cuckoo and paula daily books though her name rings a bell so I'm sure I've read some!

Just finished this and it is one of throes books I shouldn't have enjoyed but really did, and I galloped through it! Would recommend for a quick, easy, gripping read. Loved how the story flowed and past and present joined up at the end and how the author managed to explain something so implausible from a victims point of view.
