The Ice Twins - anyone read it? (spoilers)

Is it me or is the explanation totally ludicrous? What mother would invite someone over for casual sex while in charge of 6 year old twins?

I didn't like it at all. As you say, ludicrous premise.

ggirl · 03/01/2016 20:29

it was ok
but yes ridiculous
as is the ending

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/01/2016 02:14

I had to Google it to remind myself if I had read it. I had - it was rubbish.

LastAnni · 04/01/2016 02:22

Oh god I read that! What a load of crap. Overwrought and unbelievable. Similar ridiculous ending to Daughter.

3point14159265359 · 04/01/2016 02:27

I quite enjoyed the read but the ending was awful and pissed me right off - it was a bit like 'look here wimmin, if you dare to want to have/enjoy sex, your children will die and it will all be because you're a whore', which didn't sit well really.

fitforflighting · 04/01/2016 02:30

I read if after a recommendation from someone here a while ago and was a bit meh about it.

Mmbop · 04/01/2016 03:01

I read it last week. Kind of cringey-badly written but parts of it did creep me out and that kept me going back to it. Although the explanation was ridiculous, the last chapter saved it for me as I saw the reveal that it was the husband speaking as a saving plot twist because I assumed he died and it was the woman speaking.

CheerfulYank · 04/01/2016 03:08

Will someone spoil the crap out of this book for me?! I want to know what happens! :o

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/01/2016 03:26

I can't remember much of it

  • she was shagging someone she should not have been shagging and the children saw them (?) One of the twins fell out a window but it couldn't have been the window which she supposedly fell from but one on the storey above. I can't remember now why the mistaken identity arose but it had something to do with the windows being wrong.

Believe me that garbled synopsis makes it sound far more interesting than it is.

Quogwinkle · 04/01/2016 07:14

I have a copy of The Ice Twins (second hand) waiting for me to read it. MIL read it, said she couldn't understand it (?), gave it to DH who read it and said it was ok-ish. Not feeling encouraged to rush to read it :o

TotalConfucius · 04/01/2016 07:51

Some of the worst character development I've ever come across. Personality transplants every 10 pages.
I have a policy never to give up on a book. So I kept going to bed early with my Kindle just to be rid of this one.

CheerfulYank · 04/01/2016 08:17

So...were the twins switched or not?

theconstantvacuumer · 04/01/2016 08:40

Utter dross.

timeforabrewnow · 04/01/2016 08:47

CheerfulYank - the twins were switched - possibly twice. And yes, the book is as crap as others have said.

Although I did read it to the end which I wouldn't do if it was really Total Crap.

CheerfulYank · 04/01/2016 11:17

Possibly twice? Tell me more.

This is like when I see trailers for horror movies that look vaguely intriguing...I know I don't really want to see them, but I DO want to know what happens. :o

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 04/01/2016 14:49

I enjoyed it but I hated the ending.
I felt like it was one of those 'cop-out' endings. Just to make sure you knew you'd read a 'creepy' book.

Apart from that, it was atmospheric and I did feel anguish at some of things going on, like the daughter being unable to make friends at school and losing the perfect life you had. Well as much as anyone can through a book.

thunderbird69 · 04/01/2016 14:57

I agree it was ludicrous. There was one scene I felt was very real - where the little girl went up to another child in the playground ( I think pushed by her mother) and tried to talk to them and got ignored.

The writing was bizarre at times - I think she describes someone's hair as 'Jewish' !

NadiaWadia · 04/01/2016 15:23

It started off really well, really chilling, so it kept me grippped, but the ending was disappointing, just daft, as pps said. I'm not even really clear on the identity of the twins at the end (not sure the author was either!)

Clawdy · 04/01/2016 15:45

It wasn't just the bit where she has sex with the kids running around, that was ridiculous,I agree, but even more improbable was parents not knowing the difference between their twins. We have identical twins in my family, and there is always a difference, a little mole or freckle or difference in teeth. Totally silly idea.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 04/01/2016 17:52

It was gripping in a sense but the ending was totally ridiculous.

That said, it could potentially make a bit of an eerie film if done right.

I think the change in character personality was intentional. I don't think you are really meant to 'get' them, I think that's a huge part of the story. It keeps you wondering what is going on and just who is at fault

Hygge · 04/01/2016 20:53

I hated the explanation for the girl's death.

It felt to me just as 3point has described it, this is what you get if you dare to misbehave.

And I really couldn't see how she forgot all about it either.

CheerfulYank · 05/01/2016 00:24

That is strange Clawdy. I used to nanny for a set of identical twins. I haven't seen them in person in a decade but I can still tell them apart in photos with a glance.

CheerfulYank · 05/01/2016 00:24

In *new photos, I mean, that their mother posts on FB.

3point14159265359 · 05/01/2016 00:39

There was some kind of scientific (or 'scientific' perhaps) explanation for the identicalness of the twins that went beyond the norm, wasn't there? No clue what, and a quick google hasn't turned up anything either.
