50 Book Challenge 2016 Part One

southeastdweller · 01/01/2016 08:45

Thread one of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2016, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

Happy New year, everybody.

I'd like to have a go at this. I've just set my goal on Goodreads, 50 books for this year. It should be achievable if I don't waste time watching rubbish on telly and/or aimlessly messing about online.

I'm quite excited about it, actually.

onemouseplace · 01/01/2016 10:36

Happy New Reading Year! I'm going to aim for 50, I really want to get into reading again.

I'm currently reading Rilla of Ingleside on my kindle, and Lamentation by CJ Sansom - the latter is my Mum's hardback copy so is too heavy to read anywhere other than home!

minsmum · 01/01/2016 10:39

I'm in again this year and hoping to be a bit more consistent this year. I tend to read in bursts and then plough through the free books on the kindle,a bit like binge eating, but I don't count them for the challenge. I am trying to read a place called winter for book club it's okay but not really gripping me

TheCrowFromBelow · 01/01/2016 10:42

I'm in! I sort of joined last year but didn't really post.
Got to 41 books.
Currently reading State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.

CoteDAzur · 01/01/2016 10:52

Checking in Smile I read 62 books in 2015, many of which were recommendations from others on these threads. Happy new year to all Flowers

Quogwinkle · 01/01/2016 10:57

If anyone else is on Goodreads, I'm searchable by my MN nn, for general nosing around in my booklists or being Goodreads friends :) I've just signed up for the 2016 Goodreads Reading Challenge (aiming for 100 books but might reduce that if I fall behind).

LookingForMe · 01/01/2016 11:06

Happy New Year everyone. I lurked on this thread most of last year and would love to join in properly this year. Really enjoyed some of the recommendations.

I hit 50 last year and am hoping to do the same this year, but have 3 big books I want to get into the total this year.

Currently a quarter of the way through Big Book 1: War and Peace ahead of the BBC adaptation. Am enjoying it so far but it's definitely epic.... Am also reading The Ice Twins for light relief when Tolstoy gets too much.

Fauchelevent · 01/01/2016 11:13

In! I just counted how many I got to last year - 41, I read so slowly at the start of the year then like thunder in the last 6 months. Hopefully if I keep at pace I can read 60 - Dracula at the moment then some Russian lit, or Tender is the Night.

BumgrapesofWrath · 01/01/2016 11:15

I'd like to join this year. I read quite a lot, but in recent months I've struggled to get absorbed in anything so hopefully this will give me the kickstart I need.

I am starting the year with Do No Harm by Henry Marsh - really interesting so far, I can see me finishing it quite soon.

NatashaBolkonskaya · 01/01/2016 11:16

Currently a quarter of the way through Big Book 1: War and Peace ahead of the BBC adaptation.

I'm reading W&P, too. (I've also mentally rewritten some of it - hence the user name).

Which translation are you reading, out of interest? Mine is Pevear and Volokhonsky and I must say I find it very clunky in places. I'm about a third of the way through - I was hoping to finish before the new series started but Christmas got in the way somewhat

BugritAndTidyup · 01/01/2016 11:18

I'm in. I dropped off the thread last year, but kept my own record. Made it to 90ish. I'm aiming for 100 this year, but more importantly have set myself the goal of clearing my bookshelves and working through my MASSIVE TBR pile.

DamsenBerry · 01/01/2016 11:19

I'm in. I haven't read much since I finished my English Literature degree, where the material was that hard going you had to read a novel a week/ fortnight on top of three or for 40+ page academic articles, and massive chunk of poetry plus other mandatory reading... It kind of killed my reading for pleasure and became forced reading for four years!
Id like to get back into reading though, I find it so relaxing.

Sadik · 01/01/2016 11:19

Also joining at the start now :) I don't have a target, but will be interested to see how many books I read, I'm not sure that I have any real idea. A lot of my reading is comfort re-reading of old favourites, so I'm just going to 'count' new (to me) books.

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 01/01/2016 11:21

May I join too? I'm currently trying to read 'Search Inside Yourself' by Chade-Meng Tan. I'm hoping I can put it into practice and optimise my entire life!! So no massive expectations there then... Hmm

Smellyrose · 01/01/2016 11:22

Count me in - I've been waiting for the 2016 thread to start as I didn't want to join the 2015 thread late (hadn't kept track of the books I read early 2015).

I'm currently reading Authority by Jeff Vandermeer. It's the second in a trilogy so might read the third book next or the new Robert Galbraith, both of which I'll have to buy even though I'm supposed to be on a no spend January and I have a big pile of unread books (I should have bought them both yesterday!)

Matilda2013 · 01/01/2016 11:23

I'd love to join in. Got to around 53 books last year with 96 the previous year so i would like to get closer to 100 again! Starting with Retribution by Jilliane Hoffman which was recommended by a work colleague Smile

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2016 11:24

I'm in, dropped off the thread halfway through. Made 20 (30 including children's) but actually didn't read anything for about 5 months Confused so hoping to maintain a steady rate and hit 50. I've made a folder of 15 to be read to work through on the kindle before I add more otherwise I look at how many I have and find it hard to choose. I'm also going to try and give myself 30 mins reading time at bed time so I can get through a couple of Hardbacks that have been taunting me for a while.

Want to read more Classics this year, too, fill in some gaps. I have a beautiful but massive hardback copy of War and Peace and it might be the year to chip away at it. I have it on the Kindle, but really want to read it properly.

Book one is Behind the Scenes at the Museum, Kate Atkinson. She writes so well, enjoying it so far.

Equiem89 · 01/01/2016 11:25

I'm in. I'm also on good reads. Didn't do very well in 2015, only managed 39 although I did read the game of thrones books which took forever

OnGoldenPond · 01/01/2016 11:27

Will give it a try. Love reading but work often gets in the way!

One of my resolutions this year is to stop getting sucked into so much unpaid overtime and do more things for me. One of those things is to get through the enormous pile of unread books on my bookcase - and maybe write one myself! Grin

OnGoldenPond · 01/01/2016 11:30

Starting with Tender Is The Night, F. Scott Fitzgerald

SatsukiKusakabe · 01/01/2016 11:30

That's the translation I have Natasha. I got it deliberately as I loved their translation of Anna Karenina (not that I know the original Russian, but found it fluid and witty) so will be interested to read it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2016 11:32

Morning all, and Happy New Year! Thanks for starting this, South.

Book One - finished this morning:
'The Victorian Detective' - a Shire history book
I love this little series of slim history books, so had asked dp to get me some for Christmas. This one was a disappointment though, sadly. The writing was poor - it was really disjointed and undeveloped. Also, I'd read about nearly everything in there before, so it didn't really add anything to my knowledge. :(

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 01/01/2016 11:32

I'm in, fell off the thread last year.

Currently reading The Screwtape Letters - C.S Lewis

JeepersMcoy · 01/01/2016 11:33

Glad to see you can carry over books as I am part way through Ada's Algorithm by James Essinger. It's a non-fiction about Ada Lovelace and super interesting. I would really like to try reading more nonfiction this year as I usually stick to fiction.

I've never been on good reads. Might go and check it out.

OnGoldenPond · 01/01/2016 11:36

Quog, loved A Suitable Boy, got completely immersed in it. Hope to re-read it this year
