I feel so bloody daft. Only just found out about free ebooks from the library.

It's like the library, but with ebooks. From my actual library.
How has this been going on for then?

I'm getting rid of the bloody kindle daily deal email for a start.

All these books. For free!

The first one I wanted was right there on the virtual shelf, so I borrowed it and read it and then sent it back. The next book I wanted was on loan in someone else's computer, so I put a hold on it , and on some others, and today after just a few days wait, ping, there it is, waiting to be borrowed.

It's marvellous.

Oooh thanks for the tip - headed to my local library website and found loads of books to download

scrappydappydoo · 16/09/2015 16:50

How are you getting kindle books from the library Confused

glasgowlass · 16/09/2015 16:52

How did I not know this?
I'm gonna be all over this tonight! Thanks OP!

lavendersun · 16/09/2015 16:55

We love it OP - we have three library cards and get loads when we go away. Their technology was a bit clunky to begin with (overdrive I think it is still called) a couple of years ago but it has got better and better.

You can also get audio books and download them straight to your phone/ipod/etc.

Fab.

I must add that I have Prime membership and don't know how the free prime library works!

Hornydilemma · 16/09/2015 17:40

Ooohhh I've been meaning to join the library again for years, and you've just motivated me to do so tonight on the way home from work!

AlpacaLypse · 16/09/2015 17:46

Have Kindle and the libraries finally come to an arrangement? I've been using my Kobo to borrow books for some years now, one reason I chose it rather than Kindle was that you could access library e books.

Lipsiensis · 16/09/2015 18:04

They're not kindle books. Sorry by mentioning the kindle daily deal that's a red herring.

No they are ebooks that I'm reading on my iPad and iPhone through an app called OverDrive. which is connected somehow to your local library. I found it by going onto my library webpage which linked me through to OverDrive. But I think you can just download the OverDrive app and then it asks you who your local library is.

Just needed my library card number and password and done. Lots and lots and LOTS of ebooks.

Does anyone know of a way of doing this on a Kindle Paperwhite?

Lipsiensis · 16/09/2015 18:19

I don't think you can Imperial, not with OverDrive.

info here

Thanks, Lipsiensis. I think someone said that I could save it to my iCloud account and access it from there, but I haven't had a go yet. It would be worth buying a Kindle Fire, the amount I'm spending on e-books at the moment!

AlpacaLypse · 16/09/2015 20:41

Sorry Imperial, looks like OP has unintentionally muddied the waters.

I have now got a Kobo app on my phone, so I don't even have to cart the e-reader around to access my books!

Badders123 · 16/09/2015 20:44

I've downloaded overdrive on my kindle fire no.probs

ImperialBlether · 16/09/2015 20:46

I've got a Paperwhite, though, Badders. I don't think I can use it on that.

Alpa, my phone screen is too small to read a novel on it. Doesn't it hurt your eyes?

Badders123 · 16/09/2015 21:02

Ah.
I don't think I could use my phone to read on..too small.

SilverHoney · 16/09/2015 22:41

I had no idea! I've just downloaded the overdrive app but my local library isn't on the list...? Help!

AlpacaLypse · 17/09/2015 10:14

Imperial, Badders - I use the phone app when I'm travelling very light and don't want to cart anything extra about with me. When I'm busy with the dogwalking round, I sometimes end up with five or ten minutes between appointments, so I'll sit in the car and read it then. Since my car spends a lot of time parked in lonely places while I'm walking a gang of dogs, I really don't want to leave anything valuable in it. Once I broke my own rule and brought my bag with me because I was going to pay some cheques in on my way home. It was quite heavy as it had the diary in it as well as wallet etc. so I left it hidden in the car. Even though it was out of sight, some scrote had broken in to the car and grabbed the whole bag when I got back. They got about £12 cash. I got a massive pain involving cancelling cards, asking for replacement cheques from the clients, trying to work out what I'd been doing for the past eight months as the diary at that time was my main record keeping device. I'll bet everything that wasn't cash was thrown behind a hedge but I had to assume the worst.

The Kobo app does come up pretty clear, and you can change the intensity of the screen and font size easily.

cdtaylornats · 17/09/2015 10:37

I do this with my Sony eBook. None of the libraries seem to do kindle books, just epub format. Android based devices can do it with overdrive or one of the eBook readers. My local library does magazines this way as well.

unlucky83 · 17/09/2015 10:52

My library has been doing this for years too - you can't access all the books in the library though and it isn't 'overdrive' - something though your browser? Think you need to go to your council library site and the info should be there - you log in with your library details.
I haven't done it for a while because I prefer a real book - I spend most of the day looking at a screen and I want to rest my eyes - and also I often fall asleep reading in bed and as far as I could tell most ereaders turn off the 'sleep mode' on your tablet - so I woke up a few times with an almost flat battery and a tablet that had slipped under the covers and was boiling hot...which can't be good for it.

Battleshiphips2 · 17/09/2015 10:57

I got all excited then, just downloaded the app and my local library is not on it Sad

scuzzle · 17/09/2015 11:10

And magazines too! It's fab! No longer do I have to waste my money buying sleb tittle tattle!

lavendersun · 17/09/2015 13:31

Magazines, really? I must have a look although am so boring that I only subscribe to the Economist and so tight that I don't ever buy anything else.

BertieBotts · 17/09/2015 13:34

Battleships, I bet you could join another library fairly close to you which is - nearest big city?

lavendersun · 17/09/2015 14:02

Wow - I have just looked at the magazine selection - fab indeed. I often like the look of a cover when I am gliding down the supermarket aisle but never buy as I would rather read a book and think £4 is ridiculous - but I am just about to download the app!

scuzzle · 18/09/2015 02:02

Yes magazines, using the Zinio for Libraries app on my iPad, it's great!

ShadowLine · 18/09/2015 02:48

No magazines at my library Sad not with the Overdrive app anyway.
