I feel so bloody daft. Only just found out about free ebooks from the library.

It's like the library, but with ebooks. From my actual library.
How has this been going on for then?

I'm getting rid of the bloody kindle daily deal email for a start.

All these books. For free!

The first one I wanted was right there on the virtual shelf, so I borrowed it and read it and then sent it back. The next book I wanted was on loan in someone else's computer, so I put a hold on it , and on some others, and today after just a few days wait, ping, there it is, waiting to be borrowed.

It's marvellous.

Ooh. Hang on a minute. Have just checked the library information page on the council website, and yes they do have e-magazines. On the zinio app scuzzle mentioned. Will have to have a look at this...

lavendersun · 18/09/2015 06:01

Yes, Zinio here too for magazines, I now have several on my iPad and phone and am going to cancel my Economist subscription as I only read the online one anyway!

Battleships/Bertie - all libraries in one council area are linked. Your council area is determined by your address. You can use your card in any of those libraries in the area. They should all offer the same online service (and paper books in fact) as it is all paid for by that council.
(Our local library is smallish, but if there is a book you (or DCs) want and it is in any of the libraries in that council area you can reserve/order it online and collect from the local library - really good if you are reading a series/have a favourite author).
But if you have a work address in another council area you may be able to join the library using that address...you would have to check. (locally we live on the border and the other council are happy (or were at least) to let children join their libraries - not sure about adults! )

Don't forget you need to put in the overall library system, not the local library. So Cheshire Libraries, for example, rather than Northwich library.

Zazzyb · 20/09/2015 19:23

Some libraries you actually have to go in with your device to borrow the books, so you might need to ring and find out if they do remote loans.

MotherOfFlagons · 20/09/2015 19:50

I was excited about this, then when I checked out the local library it excludes Kindle. :(

DuchessofMalfi · 20/09/2015 20:20

I bought the cheapest Kobo so I could borrow ebooks from the library, which was on offer W H Smith at the time. In the long run that will work out cheaper than buying kindle books.

ShadowLine · 20/09/2015 20:24

Mother what kind of kindle do you have? If it's a kindle fire, you can still download the overdrive app and get library e-books that way. In my library at least.

Creatureofthenight · 20/09/2015 20:27

The problem is not libraries "excluding" Kindles, it is that Amazon will not agree to make Kindle books available via a library platform.

DuchessofMalfi · 20/09/2015 20:33

You can use the Overdrive app on the Kindle Fire at our library (Dorset) as well.

JemimaMuddledUp · 20/09/2015 20:43

I use my Nook and DS1 uses his kobo to borrow e-books from the library.

The range isn't quite as good as the catalogue in the physical library, but it is very handy.

The only thing that annoys me is you can't return books early to free up space to borrow another. So you have to be able to work out how long you will want the book for (7, 14 or 21 days) when you download it.

MotherOfFlagons · 20/09/2015 20:43

shadow It's a Voyage.

MotherOfFlagons · 20/09/2015 20:45

creature Yes, I know, though it particularly said it excluded Kindles for that reason, so that was why I phrased it in that way.
