I have just finished The House I Grew Up In (Lisa Jewell) and I liked it but I couldn't stand Meg, the oldest daughter.

I got the feeling she'd really, really annoy me if I knew her Grin Smug, judgemental, bossy and mumsy.

I also didn't like Jill, of the Ruby Ferguson pony books, as a kid. She was always so intolerant of anyone nervy round horses!

Who are yours? I'm sure I have more ...

Jo March in Little Women. Insufferable. I'm glad Laurie didn't marry her.

Emma as mentioned earlier

Helen Burns in Jane Eyre Yes I'm a bad person for that one.

TitaniumOvaries · 09/09/2015 20:54

Anna Karenina. I was glad when she finally

TitaniumOvaries · 09/09/2015 20:58

Oh and Paris in Homer's Iliad. WHAT a weasely, wife-stealing, spineless little cowardly wanker. He was lucky he had a big brother like Hector. Now him, I am still a bit in love with.

TheEagle · 09/09/2015 21:01

Yy to the 2 in One Day. Especially Dexter!

Also hated the wife in Us. Didn't much like the husband or son either.

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 09/09/2015 21:03

Not a book, but Mary Poppins. Can't stand her.

Ubik1 · 09/09/2015 21:05

Pollyanna

Amy March

Chippednailvarnish · 09/09/2015 21:05

Yep, Tess. I just wanted to slap her and her feckless parents...

ReluctantCamper · 09/09/2015 21:06

Also not a book, but I thought Carrie Bradshaw was a tiresome fuck up. In a similar vein, when Bridget Jones came out there was a bit of a trend of people claiming to be just like her. given that she barely managed to function as an adult, I'm not too sure why you'd want to advertise that fact.

Cheeezz · 09/09/2015 21:08

Bella in the twilight books. Bell end.

Tinfoiled · 09/09/2015 21:09

I think Emily Bronte made cathy and heathcliff deliberately unsympathetic. There's actually not a nice character in the whole novel!

Elllicam · 09/09/2015 21:09

Agree with Jo March, quite liked Amy though. Marmee was a bit of a pain as well.

Tinfoiled · 09/09/2015 21:10

Except maybe for Hareton at the very end...

ClashCityRocker · 09/09/2015 21:11

Frannie from The Stand.

She seems to think everything revolves around her and has a distinct lack of spunk.

Also, Ursula from life after life. She's ducking boring.

beaucoupdemojo · 09/09/2015 21:13

I think Cathy and Heathcliff are supposed to be unlikeable.

Mine is Maggie in Mill on the Floss - like in Tess, I wished she'd stip being so bloody wet and do something good for herself!

AnneEtAramis · 09/09/2015 21:15

God, all of them in Little Women. I have a special bit of hatred for Jo but I couldn't bear any of them.

Rose, in The Dust That Falls From Dreams.

bialystockandbloom · 09/09/2015 21:21

biscuits it was Esther I think, in Bleak House. And I agree! Sometimes nicknamed Dame Durden, which totally suited her.

I never liked Jane in Pride & Prejudice. Maybe she was supposed to be the symbol of subservient woman at the time, but god she was dull. Though maybe we weren't supposed to like her.

HarrietVane99 · 09/09/2015 21:32

Jane Austen didn't expect anyone to like Emma, but at least she had a bit of spirit, even if most of what she did was wrong. Fanny Price, now there's a wet dishrag of a character.

And most of Dickens' heroines are dripping wet.

Everyone in jane Austin's poor little niece one, (sorry dislike them all so much refuse to remember any names)

PavlovtheCat · 09/09/2015 21:40

Fitz in the Robin Hobb books.

Sorry hadn't read the whole thread then saw this just above mine:

SouthWestmom · 09/09/2015 21:42

Lego - Mary Poppins is a book! It was a book first!

Tanito279 · 09/09/2015 21:42

Whatshername, the shopaholic. Learn to budget, you stupid woman!

Gwenhwyfar · 09/09/2015 21:44

"The protagonist in Shantaram."

Well, yeah he got involved with the mafia and went to fight in a war. Kind of an anti-hero really.

Tanito279 · 09/09/2015 21:44

Oh and Titanium, I totally agree with you!

Gwenhwyfar · 09/09/2015 21:45

"given that she [Bridget Jones] barely managed to function as an adult"

She had a career in TV, plenty of friends and a close relationship with her parents. Her life wasn't all she wanted, but it wasn't that bad.
