Is there a gripping psychological thriller?

Can anyone recommend one to me please? I'm fed up!

I've just finished the lie and thought it was blah. Rambly and kind of immature in style.

Prior to that I read girl on the train and really liked it.

Also really enjoyed the magpies.

Hated before I go to sleep.

Thought gone girl was a bit cack.

I seem to go against the grain of most people! If Amazon reviews are anything to go by.

I'm fed up of feeling deflated after finishing a book. I want something gripping, chilling, unputdownable, mysterious, with decent dialogue and not rambley descriptions. Does it exist and If so, what is it called?

Thanks

I plan to read this book next:-

'The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair' by Joel Dicker

ambermoon1989 · 13/07/2015 20:22

anything by minette Walters has me hooked :):)

applecatchers36 · 13/07/2015 20:38

The silent wife by A.S.A Harrison, a story of a marriage that goes badly wrong, very gripping
Anything by Sophie Hannah

Wisteria1979 · 13/07/2015 20:46

The hypnotist by Lars Kepler. Very gripping, couldn't put it down. It's the first of his joona linna books. I have read the first three or so and they are all of a really high standard.

Marking place thanks all

Psychological thrillers are my favourite light read but it seems to be straying into check lit. I get fooled by the coves but then feel cheated when I get to the end and nothing of substance has happened.
I love tana french, all of them but particularly in the woods. Going to read it again when I get a couple of days to myself

Making a note of some of the suggestions here.

Just finished I Let You Go, which goes onto my midly disappointing of domestic thriller pile of books I've read along with Disclaimer, Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, and Her.

The benchmark for me for this genre was reached more than ten years ago when Notes on a Scandal was published. Now that was good writing.

Hygge · 14/07/2015 20:15

I Let You Go is disappointing, and a bit bizarre and unbelievable.

RiverTam · 14/07/2015 20:17

Barbara Vine
I would call quite a lot of Stephen King psychological thrillers rather than horror.

YonicScrewdriver · 14/07/2015 20:25

Was going to suggest Tana French and the Dublin murder squad books

springlamb · 14/07/2015 20:27

Place saving.
I'll go through all 33 pages on my kindle and see what I have to offer up.

grahamnortonsbeard · 15/07/2015 10:55

Mary Torjussen's My Time, Your Time and The Lonely Cool Before Dawn are both great, fast-paced reads.

insanityscatching · 15/07/2015 11:03

I'm making my way through some of Val McDermid's. Have enjoyed all that I've read so far but was absolutely gripped by Killing the Shadows.

I went to download some of these suggestions and got sidetracked by Stranger Girl by Rachel Abbott. It's ace. Although it does feature a baby getting kidnapped - happens early so not a spoiler - for those who are sensitive to themes like this. I am, and felt a bit 'don't know if I can keep reading this' so there is that.

But I really can't put it down.

I'll add a third recommendation for Tana French!

VivaLeBeaver · 19/07/2015 18:27

Apple tree yard was very good.

Clawdy · 20/07/2015 15:49

The Burning Air by Erin Kelly. What a twist....

LondonRocks · 21/07/2015 23:55

Just ordered The Burning Air and Into the Darkest Corner!

Thanks, all.

I second Barbara Vine's novels. Superb.

BlueBrightFuture · 22/07/2015 12:45

Saw In to the darkest corner in the Kindle sale not so long ago. I can not remember a kindle sale that has not included this book to be honest.

Have you read Tideline by Penny Hancock? Loved it although some people do not like the ending, still remains one of my favorites in this genre.

I also liked Lesley Glaister “ As far as you can go” and the “Poison Tree” by Erin Kelly.

Nothing recent but all still good in my opinion.

loopsyloup · 22/07/2015 23:36

I'd second the recommendation for anything by Nicci French - all brilliant.

Just finished Before I Go To Sleep which was fantastic, and another book by that author has just been published which is top of list to read next.
