Mine is 'The Sneetches'. Not widely available (you can get it in a collection of Dr Seuss on Amazon). Has great morals about social class, exclusion, wanting to be someone else/ desire to fit in, and many others - as well as being hilarious...like Green Eggs too

I can't remember the name of the one I am thinking about. It has a strong environmental message - if you chop down all the trees, then the wildlife will disappear and the planet will become grey. It was written in about 1970, so was well ahead of it's time.

nebthenoob · 06/11/2006 12:43

Oh, the places you'll go

Fab for anyone trying something new. Also the Zax - especially for stubborn toddlers.

MrsBadger · 06/11/2006 12:46

The one with the trees being cut down was (I think) The Lorax
I liked it because of the word 'thneed'.
Also liked Green Eggs, which was the first one I ever read.

foundintranslation · 06/11/2006 12:48

ds is nearly 18 months and loves 'Green Eggs' - he will bring it to me to read, saying 'ham, ham'

foxtrot · 06/11/2006 12:52

help me out here - the one that list all the brothers called Dave who should've had names like Marvin O Gravel Ballon Face???

clerkKent · 06/11/2006 13:13

Yes, The Lorax. I find it hard to believe this:

"The Lorax is arguably Seuss' most controversial work, having been banned in some schools and libraries for its political content"

Dr Seuss banned!

My first introduction to Dr Seuss was the beginners dictionary in French - ABC with every phrae in two languages. I did not come across Dr Seuss again for 35 years!

MrsBadger · 06/11/2006 13:16

Foxtrot, it's called, um, Too Many Daves

foxtrot · 06/11/2006 13:20

ah yes, its all coming back to me now (courtesy of a peep at amazon!) Mrs McCave and her twenty three sons and she named them all Dave.

Ellieorange · 06/11/2006 13:39

Oh yes, the Dave's are brill, only found it after I'd named my ds unfortunately - and the Zax is great too, about 2 very stubborn creatures who meet and won't budge so they are stuck for eternity. Those 3 are all in the collection I bought my mum along with the star bellied sneetches who had stars on their bellies and the ordinary sneetches who had 'none upon thars'.

love Are you my mother?

can't stand reading Fox in Socks

foxinsocks · 06/11/2006 18:22

ds and dd love Dr Seuss

One Fish Two Fish is a fave of theirs

The Lorax, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Green Eggs and Ham, Cat in the Hat, Yertle the Turtle and of course Fox in Socks

foxinsocks · 06/11/2006 18:28

btw, if you like the books, there are 2 great cds (1 called 'The Cat in the Hat and other stories' read by Adrian Edmondson and the other 'Dr Seuss Collection' read by Rik Mayall) which are really fab. For at least a year or so, those CDs were my children's favourites.

mamama · 06/11/2006 18:31

Never had Dr Seuss as a child so have enjoyed discoering the books with DS. 'Oh the places you'll go' is a wonderful story but our current favourite has to be 'There's a Wocket in my Pocket'

Steppy1 · 06/11/2006 18:33

DS loves reading green eggs and ham to mummy and his little sister...we laugh out loud with him to...my fave !!

Ellieorange · 06/11/2006 18:40

forgot about One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

just about to read it to the dds!

janeite · 07/11/2006 20:04

"Too Many Daves" is such a fab story. But even better is -
"I saw a pair of pale green pants with nobody inside 'em".

"Well I got out, I got out fast, as fast as I could go sir,
I was not scared but pants like that I did not care for, no Sir!"

GraceUnderFire · 07/11/2006 20:06

Love Dr Seuss. The Grinch is fab at Christmas - we also love the Sleep Book, the Lorax, The Sneetches, Horton Hatches an Egg...oh there are so many.

GraceUnderFire · 07/11/2006 20:07

The empty pants one used to scare ds1 - I had to skip it

Fauve · 07/11/2006 20:09

The Lorax has a very sound environmental message. We like all of them, though. Not sure if we've seen The Sneetches, however.

foxinsocks · 07/11/2006 20:10

oh I had forgotten the empty pants! I love that one!

Spidermama · 07/11/2006 20:11

Empty pants is great but so eerie.
I love Yertle the Turtle for its good old fashioned socialist message.

foxinsocks · 07/11/2006 20:12

I put my arm around their waist
And sat right down beside them.
I calmed them down.
Poor empty pants
With nobody inside them

(snigger)
