Lately we’ve had a hankering for the days when a single printed photo was more precious than 300 Instagram shots of breakfast food. That’s why we’ve joined together with publishers Century to give one lucky Mumsnetter a brilliant retro Fujifilm Instax Mini camera with two rolls of film, as well as a signed copy of Dorothy Koomson’s new novel, That Girl From Nowhere. Three runners up will also receive signed copies of the book, as well as the chance to have their favourite photos immortalised as vintage prints, courtesy of Polabox.

That Girl From Nowhere tells the story of Clem, a photo fanatic who covers her wall with pictures of treasured moments, “like crystallised elements of who I was, how I became who I am”. Adopted as a baby, the adult Clem’s world is rocked when she accidentally meets someone who knows all about her adoption and what happened to her birth parents. As a series of shocking events starts to unravel the tangled truths of her past, Clem is forced to question if she’s willing to pay the true cost of actually meeting her birth family…

To enter our competition, share your most treasured photo on the discussion thread below, along with the story behind it. Whether it’s a snapshot of a summer holiday destination or a picture of a family memento, just post it on the thread before 10am on 13th April for a chance to win. That Girl From Nowhere by Dorothy Koomson is published on 6th April 2015.

This competition is now closed

Me at school in 1968. Can't believe mum put a ring round my face x

This photograph(1947) is of my lovely hubby taken when he was just under 2 yrs old,it shows him in his pinafore which he wore when he was one of the first children to attend one of the first Day Nurseries run by the Local Council, his mum was very forward thinking and was having none of the "stay at home wifey" stuff which was usual in that era,she worked full time from when he was 6mths old.The picture shows him with the Pepper-Pot motif on his pinafore, the Pepper-Pot was on his peg next to his shoe bag on the wall. This photograph has been with us all over the world and shows him with loads of golden curls and a quite miserable "lip" He wishes he had hair like this now but he is quite lacking in the hair dept nowadays.

My Grandad, who was killed in the war when my mum was a baby

These photographs mean the world to me because they link me ( and my children ) to the past lives of our family.
The first shows my dad, now in his 70s looking every inch the hipster dude which he was in the early 60s, with his jazz band The Down Town Four. He taught himself to play the guitar and he's here playing the bass guitar complete with resplendent BrylCream quiff! Much to the amazement of my teenage sons, he actually looks a tiny bit cool. Not scoring too high on the Teenage Embarrassment Scale is a win-win situ in our home!!

The second picture is ' WAAY TOO CREEPY!! ' ( according to said teenagers, although my two daughters are more kindly disposed to it. Apparently the occupants of photo put them in mind of the characters in The Woman in Black! This is a good thing (??) I'm told ).

In actual fact, these are my Great, Great, Great Grandparents on my mother's side. Irish gypsies no less, who went on to found a dynasty of farmers, surviving many hardships a long the way. A rich seam of Irish history, involving famine, English occupancy, assassinations by the Black & Tans and all the usual trials & tribulations of family life. From that side of the family, we take our love of poetry and storytelling, music & dance. My dad loved music too, obviously.

When I see how my children take after these ancestors ( training as film editors, actors and writers ), I cherish these links to our shared heritage even more.
