Lately we’ve had a hankering for the days when a single printed photo was more precious than 300 Instagram shots of breakfast food. That’s why we’ve joined together with publishers Century to give one lucky Mumsnetter a brilliant retro Fujifilm Instax Mini camera with two rolls of film, as well as a signed copy of Dorothy Koomson’s new novel, That Girl From Nowhere. Three runners up will also receive signed copies of the book, as well as the chance to have their favourite photos immortalised as vintage prints, courtesy of Polabox.

That Girl From Nowhere tells the story of Clem, a photo fanatic who covers her wall with pictures of treasured moments, “like crystallised elements of who I was, how I became who I am”. Adopted as a baby, the adult Clem’s world is rocked when she accidentally meets someone who knows all about her adoption and what happened to her birth parents. As a series of shocking events starts to unravel the tangled truths of her past, Clem is forced to question if she’s willing to pay the true cost of actually meeting her birth family…

To enter our competition, share your most treasured photo on the discussion thread below, along with the story behind it. Whether it’s a snapshot of a summer holiday destination or a picture of a family memento, just post it on the thread before 10am on 13th April for a chance to win. That Girl From Nowhere by Dorothy Koomson is published on 6th April 2015.

This competition is now closed

Winner: UterusUterusGhali

Runners-Up: emmastevenson777, Kaytee75 and JoylessFucker (perhaps this will cheer you up?!)

Thanks for all your wonderful contributions and congratulations to the winners!

I have suffered a series of three bereavements over the last couple of months. We lost both my mother and father in law the week before Christmas and then last month my husband died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage. The photo I treasure is the pil's wedding photo, we used it on the cover of the order of service from their joint funeral on January. They'd been married 64 years.

My mother was a FANY in the war in Kenya & was dispensing medicines to the sick or wounded soldiers when she met my Father & they got married. Happily he got back to England safely when the war ended surviving the horrors of Burma.

I love this photo, me and my cousins on our Grandads doorstep. Every week without fail all the family would go to his house on a Saturday for lunch and a catch up, he was the heart of our family. He passed away in 2006 and it hasn't been the same since. This photo reminds me of happier times

I'm a terrible person, I've had to add 2 photos because I can't decide which one means the most to me!
The first one is Bruce the Beagle, and this photo was taken the day he became ours after a couple of months fostering him. He is only 6 and we're his 3rd family and he started off his life in a laboratory being tested on :( As you can probably tell, it was just before Christmas!
The second one is of my French Lop bunny Mozart, he died 13 years ago, and I don't have many photos of him, but I was going through a really rough time with depression at the time and he really kept me going, he was so affectionate and knew when I needed a cuddle from him (most of the time!!). I knew I couldn't abandon him when he was so bonded with me, and that's the only reason I'm still here now :)

My lovely Dad was a test driver for a tyre company. He was offered a 6 month rotation in the USA and the money was brilliant. Mum had just found out she was carrying me and had they known he would have been forbidden from going, but they needed the money desperately. So, they kept quiet.

Here is Dad, looking like an extra from a cowboy movie, a few days after I was born. He came back when I was a month old. The hat he is wearing in the picture is probably my most treasured possession of his. He died 6 years ago this month and not a day goes by when I don't miss him.

My gt gt aunty's wedding, in 1942. She was a twin, but her sister passed away at her birth. Her husband and two of her brothers would die before the end of the war, leaving her with an infant son. She passed away herself in 1976 still quite young, having since remarried.

The wonderful thing however - the church that they are stood outside, most of my ancestors on her fathers side are buried from mid 1800s onwards. Most of my family married there, and when it was holding a weekly mass a great number were baptised too. The church still stands in the middle of the glen, although used very infrequently, and I feel genuinely surrounded by family when I'm there (even if a lot of them are 6 ft under!)

My mum and dad's wedding, both no longer with us, but it captures the era beautifully

Me, my mum, my nana, 20 odd years ago. At the stages of our lives, we have looked exactly the same.

Now nana is dead, and mum is ever deeper into dementia and doesn't know who I am. But looking at that photo, the moment of standing in nanas pristine garden, smelling the salt in the air, is back in an instant.

Sally, love your photo! My parents' wedding photo looks just like that!

This is me, my sister and our big brother, this photo means a lot to us as we came so very close to losing our brother a couple of years ago when he was horrifically attacked by his own step brother. Although it was over two years ago, my brother is still affected by it, he isn't as strong as he used to be, both his lungs were badly punctured and he now has the lungs of a man more than twice his age because of the damage they received. His voice is a very hoarse whisper and is showing no sign of coming back any time soon. He spent 4 months in hospital after the attack, for 1 of those he was completely unconscious (he was most miffed that he'd missed New Year!).

Every day our entire family thanks our lucky stars that we still have him with us, as it's nothing short of a miracle (and the fantastic team that treated him!) that he is still alive.

My little 2 and a half year old Georgie may never make a ballerina, but hey, who is to stop her trying?! She reminds me of myself at that age and I love that she throws herself into her ballet classes wholeheartedly. I like to look at this photo and see it is as a reminder of that age at which children are totally innocent and naive to prejudices of their peers. When this stage is passed I will always treasure this picture as summing up my girl!

And I may well drag it out to show her first boyfriend and make her cringe! So much to look forward to!!

The local people of the Okavango delta in Botswana took us out in their makoros for sunset. It was a truly magical experience and one I'll remember for always.

My mother , born 1922, with her father.
Her mother suffered Postpartum Pyschosis which in those days was treated with admission to an asylum and no drugs. She was in and out of hospital until mum was 11 and then stayed until she died in the 70s.
My mother was raised by her father and this photo hangs on my wall as it makes me happy that he did such a marvellous job as a single parent .
My mother visited her mother whenever she could for the 40 years that she was hospilised for, sometime throwing all 3 of us into the back of the small 650cc engined Gogo mobile and doing the return trip from Bristol to St albans in a day .

Trumpton - your grandmother and mine had the same story almost - mine had PP after my dad was born, in and out of hospital but got pregnant again when he was 13, and was worse after having my aunt. In and out again for the rest of her life.

JoylessFucker · 17/03/2015 13:53

This is a picture of my father & I taken at a fancy dress party on board ship crossing the Atlantic. Its brings back memories of early childhood when we travelled by ship a fair bit. My Dad's a big man (6' 4") which I think heightens the cuteness factor. He's shrunk a bit now, but is still very special.
