From bestselling author Philip Kerr, comes the brand new young adult novel Winter Horses.

Kalinka has lost her home, her family, her belongings, still, she has gained one small, precious gift: a relationship with the rare wild and wily Przewalski’s horses that wander the reservation she is hiding in. Apart from Max the reserve caretaker, these endangered animals are her only friends until a Nazi campaign of extermination nearly wipes them out for good. Now she must set out on a treacherous journey to save the only two surviving horses - and herself.

Many thanks for the book. I found it a very interesting read. I haven't read any Philip Kerr books before but I know that he is extremely talented at describing war, so this was probably a good book to start with as it was based at a younger audience than myself. It was obviously very sad in parts as the subject matter isn't exactly cheery. The characters were fairly likeable, especially Max. I did find if a bit odd that the horses were made out to be more human as it was supposed to be a story based on historical fact. I presumed this was done to appeal to a younger audience.

I have only just found this thread, sorry. I was one of the lucky winners of the book. Thank you MN.

This really appealed to me but I have to say, I did struggle with this a little. I appreciate that the topic meant that it was never going to be an 'easy' read but I thought that it might be one of those books that you don't want to put down. That was not the case at all sadly.

It was interesting and like allybird1, I learned a lot about the war. This was good and I enjoyed learning more. This is a particular historical time point that I find interesting anyway which helped. I also found the relationship between Kalinka and the horses a bit difficult to believe. It just seemed rather far fetched for me.

I am glad that I read it but I would not immediately try and find another Philip Kerr to read. Sorry if this is a little negative but I am being honest!
