1 month to go and I already know that this will be the best book I read this year. I absolutely loved it. It's £2.99 for the Kindle version and you'll want to read it again as soon as you finish.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August

Augustus by John Williams!

Corygal · 07/12/2014 22:25

Stoner was achingly sad, I loved it.

EBearhug · 07/12/2014 22:28

A Welsh Dawn by Gareth Thomas.

GiantGaspingSatanicCyst · 07/12/2014 22:32

Americanah.

DoctorTwo · 07/12/2014 23:11

The Wolf In Winter by John Connolly.

I struggled to find a fiction book I liked this year. None of the fiction books I read stood out to be honest. Hoping for a better 2015 Kindle year.

Having said that I really enjoyed Lynda Bellingham's "There is something I'm dying to tell you" ... on Kindle for 99p at the moment.

Apple Tree Yard - starts with the protagonist at her own trial indicted with conspiracy to murder ... the novel is about how a nice girl gets to be in that situation. I also loved The Goldfinch and We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves.

We Were Liars
Bought it for DD, borrowed it and read it in one sitting, loved it.

BauerTime · 08/12/2014 20:04

Marking place so I can come and get some inspiration later!

awaynboilyurheid · 12/12/2014 18:24

Paula thanks for the info, I did not know that ! looking forward to seeing it , it will make a great film, if they stick to the book.

Galaxymum · 14/12/2014 14:40

I have felt quite lost with my reading for several months and haven't concentrated very well. I am looking through the thread for inspiration.

ktlq · 16/12/2014 20:42

I'm another one for The Goldfinch. I loved Boris. Truly one of the best characters in literature! Also loved Apple Tree Yard. It was great to see a 50+ woman as the central character...

IsabellaofFrance · 16/12/2014 22:39

I loved The Snow Child, it was fabulous and I cried a little when I had finished it.

I also really liked The Undertaking, although it was hard going in places.

Postchildrenpregranny · 17/12/2014 12:44

Oh bibliomania I have never met anyone else who has read A month in the country which I think is a wonderful book . Will try The History of Rain and Stoner

Postchildrenpregranny · 17/12/2014 12:48

And wookiecookie I too loved The Garden of Evening Mists, which I have read twice, once for book club (I rarely re-read). Very unusual and I love books set in ''exotic' locations, other times .
The Wake (Anna Hope) is a very moving (fiction) book about the aftermath of WW1 And Helen Dunmore is back on form with The Lie,also post WW1 .

Cocolate · 17/12/2014 12:49

I got The Goldfinch for last Christmas and didn't finish it I got so bored about two thirds of the way in. Loved Apple Tree Yard too but also "The Safest Place" by Suzanne Bugler.

Last year my favourite book was "Tatiana and Alexander" and it would still top any 2014 reads.

Cocolate · 17/12/2014 12:50

"The Snow Child" was very good
so was
"Last Train to Liguria" by Christine Dwyer Hickey

Johnogroats · 17/12/2014 12:57

Goldfinch
Americanah - difficult to choose, but loved both.
Luminaries - enjoyed, but struggled a bit.
Robert Galbraith (ie JK Rowling) enjoyed both the silkworm and the first one....so much that I can't remember the name.
Also lots of books about cycling... The secret race being the best.
Away for Christmas so hoping to read lots, including Ben macintyre on philby.

mrsbabookaloo · 17/12/2014 12:59

Sorry, haven't read the whole thread, but I will come back to it later for ideas. I just wanted to add my favourite, which was "She left me the Gun" by Emma Brockes. A great true story.

Of the ones that people mentioned, I also loved "We are all completely beside ourselves", but I didn't get along with "Life after Life" or "The Paying Guests" - and this despite the fact that I love Sarah Waters and the book is set right where I live!

GertrudePerkins · 17/12/2014 13:09

I really enjoyed The Children Act, and Life After Life. The Goldfinch is still in my "to-read" pile nine months on. I loved The Secret History but hated The Little Friend so I can't decide whether I fancy this one or not. Although the best book I've read this year was an oldie - Isherwood's A Single Man. oh, and The Evil Seed by Joanne Harris.

annoyedofnorwich · 17/12/2014 13:12

The Chronicles of St Mary's and the rest of the ones in that series.

TheLovelyBoots · 18/12/2014 10:55

I loved Stoner.

Poisonwood Bible.
Life After Life (although truthfully I read that last year)
and yes, Suitable Boy. He's writing a Suitable Girl now, I understand?

I liked the Goldfinch, but didn't love it.

the go between.

nobutreally · 18/12/2014 11:00

Loved The Goldfinch, and The Song of Achilles, which is just be-au-ti-ful, but my favourite was one I should have read years ago: The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell.
