Read Empress Orchid a few weeks ago - slow, and doesn't get much better, imo. Interesting detail about life at that time, but not enough plot for me. Just started JPod, by Douglas Coupland. Quite enjoying it so far. Also read that 'Sophie's bakery for the broken hearted' and although it definitely is chick lit, it was quite enjoyable.

Lact8 · 03/10/2006 21:54

Just finished Anansi's Boys by Neil Gaiman.

Have recently read American Gods and Neverwhere by him too. Usual fantasy I read is Robin Hobb/Terry Goodkind so a bit of a change of style.

Anyone got any suggestions of what to try next?

I hate not having my next book ready to start, could end up doing ironing or something!

MrsSpoon · 04/10/2006 12:13

Emmylou, IMO Life of Pi is just about to get good, I found the first 100 pages a slog but after that it was the most amazing book I have read.

I have just started Teacher Man by Frank McCourt.

Expat, I have had Cold Mountain languishing on my bookshelves for a couple of years now , you have encouraged me to bump it up my to be read pile.

lucyfercat · 04/10/2006 12:24

I've got a copy of The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve if anybody would like it?

okish, bit down and you can spot the ending a mile off!

god I'm really selling it aren't I?

sophiewd · 04/10/2006 12:30

Just read Christ the Lord by Anne Rice, quite heavy and deep in meaningful, going onto The Constant Gardener.

Expat did you find cords?

sfxmum · 04/10/2006 12:31

lact8 if you liked American gods may i suggest China Mieville - Perdido street station is fab, but i like all of his stuff

currently reading Black Swan Green - david mitchell
and i hope to follow up with
the night watch and cloud of sparrows

singersgirl · 04/10/2006 12:32

"The Terrorist" by John Updike. And before that "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and before that "Alentejo Blue" by Monica Ali, which I warmed to after a shaky start.

lilibet · 04/10/2006 12:34

I'm reading Little Women for book group and really hating it.

Those girls want slapping

I really enjoy Anita Shreve's, nice escapist stuff.

After I have finished Little Women I am going to re-read The Quincunx.

foxinsocks · 04/10/2006 12:40

I'm reading 'DC Confidential' by Christopher Meyer, the new Irvine Welsh (for some reason, the description tickled me) and I'm still reading 'Shantaram' which is exceedingly long!

Not sure you'll like 'May contain nuts' expat. I couldn't force myself to read it all - it's v cliched.

lucyfercat · 04/10/2006 12:42

lilibet - I think you have to place Little Women in the context of when it was written, 1860's America iirc - Civil War and all that.

They are a bit wet though aren't they?

hannahsaunt · 04/10/2006 12:53

About to start The Secret River (Kate Grenville); hope it lives up to it's billing. Also off to library for Deaver type trash for long weekend away

kslatts · 04/10/2006 13:12

Just finished Perfect Match by Jodi Picoult, really enjoyed it. She is my favourite author atm. Just started Death of an Ordinary Man by Glen Duncan, only on page 86 but finding it quite confusing.

wheelybug · 04/10/2006 13:29

had started reading 'The Parasite' by Daphne Du Maurier but thinking of re-reading Jane Eyre(although don't think I ever finished it first time round a long time ago - ).

saltire · 04/10/2006 13:30

Have just finished Arthur and George, by Juliam barnes, it's our latest book groupp read. Enjoyed it. We had the Ukranian tractor, and i although i enjoyed it, i certainly didn't find it funny, it said on the back cover it was "hilarious", well i didn't think so. I'm about to start "The Island" by victoria Hislop

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 04/10/2006 13:31

I felt a bit let down by the ending of 'Arthur and George', Saltire - somehow inconclusive, and I wanted a big denouement, which never came.

saltire · 04/10/2006 13:54

i know what you mean Jackie, i felt a bit let down, especially as there was such a lot written about the "crimes" george had allegedly comitted.
Not saying too much in case anyone not read it

MsBionic · 04/10/2006 13:57

kslatts have you read My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult yet? It's my fav of all her books.

I also really liked The Time Travellers Wife - Weird but wonderful

maycontainstress · 04/10/2006 14:34

I'm reading Light On Snow by Anita Shreve at the moment. Its easy reading but I'm not exactly gripped, as in, I couldn't be arsed to find out what happens next. I may or may not finish it.

Not sure what's next, I want something to get me teeth into.

kslatts · 04/10/2006 14:47

Hi MsBionic, I have read My Sister's Keeper, I agree it was one of my favourites too. I have also read Vanishing Acts which I also enjoyed. Have you read The Pact? I've heard it's one of her best.
Kslatts

MsBionic · 04/10/2006 14:48

maycontainstress what kind of books do you like?

MsBionic · 04/10/2006 14:50

Yes I've read The Pact and it was good. The only one I havent read is Keeping Faith which i will get after I've finish Predator by Partica Conwell (she's fab!)

indignatio · 04/10/2006 14:50

Call me Elizabeth - v disturbing

brimfull · 04/10/2006 14:51

I'm reading "A Year of Wonders" by Geraldine brookes ..I think that's her name. It's about the plague and how this town in derbyshire decided to quarantine themselves to stop it spreading.Quite good, unusual.Apparently based on truth.

doggiesayswoof · 04/10/2006 14:51

My lover's lover by Maggie O'Farrell. I think her books are great but I do find them a bit emotionally draining. Before that I read The Accidental by Ali Smith which I just loved from start to finish - so I've got Hotel World by her next. Then I might try some Iain M Banks - I've never tried his sci-fi stuff.
