Thread four of the 50 Book Challenge.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more!)

Here are the previous threads...

39.Cornish Coast Murder - John Bude - a 99p Kindle deal, similar style to Agatha Christie but not quite as good. Decent enough detective story.

tumbletumble · 27/09/2014 16:11

Thanks Cote, I really enjoyed your review of Escape the Diet Trap (a book I've heard of but never read). It was by far the most 'literary' review of a weight loss book I've ever read!

CoteDAzur · 27/09/2014 21:03

tumble - No doubt I will soon be told to "go read Escape The Diet Trap" by low-carb fans, so I thought I'd note down its shortcomings here for future reference Smile

  1. The House We Grew Up In, Lisa Jewell

On the surface of things, Lorelei is the charismatic and loving matriarch of the Bird family who live an idyllic and carefree life in the Cotswolds. In reality, this is a woman whose self-absorption and obsession with accumulating stuff intensifies after a shocking act within the family occurs. Lorelei's self-absorption and hoarding tendencies damages each person she loves - from her four children and her husband to her new partner and that partner's two children. And yet Lorelei doesn't seem to notice, until too late in her life when she finds herself completely abandoned and alone. But obviously Lorelei is damaged herself and secrets from her past are revealed in the final letters of her life to a stranger.

This book also focuses on the divergent paths her children take into and through adulthood and the effects the shocking event that rocked their family at Bird House had on the decisions they made.

A really good yet very distressing read, and in the end uplifting. I found myself getting so angry and upset with Lorelei, yet trying to be understanding of her mental condition at the same time. And I felt so sorry for her. Highly recommended.

  1. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Finally finished it this afternoon. I'm glad I read it, but it won't be going onto my re-read list or my favourite reads of 2014 sadly. I found it quite a slog through a story I didn't particularly enjoy, which is a shame as I enjoyed The Secret History and The Little Friend very much.

Need to read something light and short next :o

Provencalroseparadox · 29/09/2014 08:11

Wow Duchess I loved Goldfinch and it's definitely in my top 5

Sonnet · 29/09/2014 09:25

Finished Book 67 - Doom Watch by David Burnell (a kindle "cheapie")
a cornish coast murder mystery
Finished Book 68 - The Farm by Tom Rob Smith
Started Book 69 - The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

I loved the Goldfinch too - the only one of hers I have ever read (yet!)

DuchessofMalfi · 29/09/2014 09:25

I am genuinely disappointed that I didn't enjoy The Goldfinch as much as I had hoped I would. Nothing wrong with DT's writing - wonderful as ever, just found I wasn't enjoying the story - so much about drugs and addiction that it put me off.

Sonnet · 29/09/2014 09:36

Duchess - A friend has exactly the same view as you.

Sonnet · 29/09/2014 09:38

I pressed post too soon - I was going to add that she shared this veiw with me prior to me reading the book. Because I was aware of this prior to reading it I think it did not affect me as much IYKWIM!

  1. Gone Tomorrow - Lee Child

Another Jack Reacher, fast and mindless, just what the doctor ordered after a month glued to the TV screen and away from my Kindle. Slightly better than most in the series.

Now on to The Night Circus...

Sparklypants · 29/09/2014 16:43

Place marking for later.

Provencalroseparadox · 29/09/2014 17:03

To me the drugs and addiction stuff, certainly in terms of Theo, was really understandable given what he'd gone through. That whole Vegas period rang really true for me having seen friends go through a less extreme version of it

Southeastdweller · 29/09/2014 19:23

I'm in deep with The Goldfinch. Not even the smallest of complaints from me but I'm not quite a third into it yet. But what I have read is stunning.

Question - when do you read? I am a slow reader, which doesn't help, but people on this thread have read so many books and seem to read so quickly! I have three DCs which doesn't help (youngest one aged 2) and also work school hours so am either busy with the children or tired. Do you not ever go online or watch TV? I am jealous and want to know everyone's reading secrets!

tumbletumble · 30/09/2014 16:13

Whippet, I read for between half an hour and an hour most evenings. I deliberately go up to bed earlier than I need to, in order to get myself away from the TV and the internet. I have evening baths rather than morning showers, and always read in the bath as well as in bed.

I have half an hour on Saturdays when I take DC2 and DC3 to swimming class and DC1 is at football. Otherwise I don't read much during the day - unless it's a really good book and I can't tear myself away! I drive to work so can't read then unfortunately. Haven't tried audio books yet.

I am a fairly quick reader - not mega fast though.

tumbletumble · 30/09/2014 16:14

I loved The Goldfinch btw!

CoteDAzur · 30/09/2014 16:24

whippet - Kindle is the way to reading lots and everywhere Smile I have mine with me all the time and so read while waiting for the bus, in queue in the post office, waiting for DC to come out of school or for my nail polish to dry, for example. It's fantastic.

Southeastdweller · 30/09/2014 16:32

I read on public transport, at home and in cafés. I watch quite a bit of TV and go online a lot (but the time doing both has decreased since starting this challenge Smile). Takes me on average six days to read a book and I'm happy with that.

whippetwoman · 30/09/2014 18:12

Thanks tumble Cote and SouthEast some good ideas there.

I do try to go to bed early and read but I often end up falling asleep, which is a problem. I could go earlier though! I do have a kindle, which I love, but I am obviously not taking advantage of all the times I could be reading, those little gaps in the day, so I will make sure I take my kindle out and about with me at all times as that will help. There are times when I am online when I could be reading too.
Must try harder Grin

Sparklypants · 30/09/2014 20:02

21 (including the one I'm reading now) books so far.

Sparklypants · 30/09/2014 20:12

I read when on public transport or when I get a free moment with DS at pre school. I also read in the bath (and stay in there far too long) I also tend to go to bed earlier so I can get a good hour of reading in Smile

I've got a Nook so I have all my books with me all the time but I do read real books too (charity shop shopper Smile and I think I'm getting a kindle for Christmas...because there's always books on kindle that I can't get on Nook (I've also seen a kobo for £25...)

Clearly I need help (but if one of my ereaders dies I'll have 2 back ups Grin

whippetwoman · 30/09/2014 22:16

Sparkly I love your approach to multiple ereaders. The more the merrier.

Clearly I am going wrong by taking baths not showers. Valuable reading time is being lost Smile

whippetwoman · 30/09/2014 22:18

I mean showers not baths! This is an example of how tired I am. Oh, and also how I should be in bed reading instead of clogging up this thread.
