Family sagas / long series

Right. I have exhausted all the family saga type series I know of. What can I read that's similar to the Cazalets, the Clifton Chronicles, the Forsytes, anything by Penny Vincenzi, the Emma Hart books, Outlander etc etc. Inspire me! I want easy reading, absorbing, long and ideally multiple volumes....

How about Cynthia Harrod Eagles?

KatieKaye · 04/07/2014 20:54

How about Susan Howatch? Penmarric, Cashelmara, The Wheel of Fortune and The Rich Are DIfferent and it's sequel Sins of the Fathers?

I Claudius and Claudius The God by Robert Graves for the ultimate in dysfunctional families.

Kikaninchen · 04/07/2014 20:55

Sorry posted too soon; Cynthia Harrod Eagles, The Morland Dynasty books.

MollyMaDurga · 04/07/2014 21:03

LeBearPolar · 04/07/2014 21:06

Have you read the Wideacre trilogy by Philippa Gregory? Here

Ragwort · 04/07/2014 21:07

Have you tried Jodi Picoult novels - a bit similar but each one takes a theme and gives different characters' perspectives of it? Not very heavy but easy to read Grin.

Bunbaker · 04/07/2014 21:11

The Wideacre Trilogy by Philippa Gregory
The Patteran Trilogy by Patricia Wendorf -

DuchessofMalfi · 04/07/2014 21:59

Have you read R F Delderfield's novels. A Horseman Riding By trilogy, for example. Or To Serve Them All My Days, and many more. Should satisfy the need for long family sagas Smile

The Jalna series by Mazo de la Roche - lovely books.

magimedi · 04/07/2014 22:41

The Forsyte Saga - John Galsworthy.

Just the best ever family saga & a forerunner to many mentioned above.

magimedi · 04/07/2014 22:42

Sorry, it's late & I've had Wine & just re read the Op & seen you've read the Forsytes.

comfycushion · 05/07/2014 08:28

I'm almost embarrassed to suggest this, but have you ever read A Woman of Substance and its sequels? It's Barbara Taylor Bradford so a bit cringey but I've read them a few times and love them! Very epic family saga type stuff.

KatieKaye · 05/07/2014 14:16

If you like the Morland Dynasty, then how about the Daughters of England series by Philippa Carr (aka Victoria Holt aka Jean Plaidy)?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/07/2014 14:19

Ken Follett, one set around first world war, 2 volumes out so far.

Bunbaker · 05/07/2014 16:26

I loved Ken Follett's The Pillar's of the Earth and World Without End.

Is that The Century Trilogy you are referring to Five? Are they a good read?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/07/2014 22:33

Yes, I have never read any of his before, they were OK, lots of historical facts I didn't know and a lot of intertwining families. He can't write a sex scene thoughGrin

Rosarosae · 09/07/2014 23:27

One of my favourite novels is Middlesex - a very long book which is different from all the family sagas and absolutely captivating. By the author of The Virgin Suicides, but this is a much better novel.

CointreauVersial · 09/07/2014 23:29

Penmarric by Susan Howatch.

JimmyCorkhill · 10/07/2014 22:14

Yes, yes, yes to Middlesex! Amaaaaazing book. Also The Poisonwood Bible. I am currently reading The Thorn Birds.

This might help.

DistantShip · 10/07/2014 22:23

Wilbur Smiths Ballantyne series, set in Africa 19tj/20th century are on a Kindle offer. I loves these as a teenager and have recently read again!
