Thread 3 of the 50 book challenge. Here are the previous threads...

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more!)

  1. Her by Harriet Lane. Finished this afternoon. Really enjoyed, that ending gave me the shivers. Read it just before taking DC swimming.

Still thinking about it, will write review for other thread.

  1. The Lemon Grove - Helen Walsh

A middle-class couple and their teenage daughter and her boyfriend go on holiday to Mallorca and the mother has a fling with the boyfriend (not a spoiler). Enjoyed it more than I expected it to - some good observations, loved the ending, and she evokes that part of the world well but it was underwritten in places, much too much use of 'he' and 'she' and I didn't understand why the mother did what she did.

Now on my first Jasper Fforde - The Eyre Affair. Taking a while to get into but OK so far.

  1. The Devil's Recruit by S.G.Maclean.

I think this is about the fifth book in a series. Unfortunately I hadn't read any of the others so the references to the previous stories made no sense to me and actually made what is a good standalone story a bit confusing. In the end I enjoyed it though.

My mil gave me a bag yesterday with about twenty paperbacks in it! I didn't know whether to be Grin or Confused I now definitely need to buy more bookcases!

CoteDAzur · 01/08/2014 09:33

I'm 25% into The Silkworm and really hoping that it will start coming together soon.

I see what you mean by "needs heavy editing", Remus.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/08/2014 12:13

I have given up on another one - Anthony Trollope's, 'The Warden.'

wiltingfast · 01/08/2014 13:29

Oh really Remus? Not sure I've read that one but I did go through a big Anthony Trollope phase years ago. Mind you I was stuck in France at the time and while the library had books in english you had to fill a form and request exactly what you wanted. I ended up reading a lot of classics!

Just picked up we're all completely beside ourselves by Karen J Flower on amazon for 1.80 in case anyone's interested.

  1. Anne Rice "Blood and Gold". Reasonably enjoyable but not my favourite of the series.
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/08/2014 15:02

Wilting - I will give him another go; am just not feeling strong enough for churchy stuff right now!

Book 60 The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde

First in Fforde's Thursday Next series - a re-read for me because I really enjoy these books and was in need of something lighthearted.

CheerfulYank · 01/08/2014 18:20

Oooh I want to join! I've read a lot this year but I'll just do the ones from the past month or so to start.

  1. The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag
  2. Dr Sleep by Stephen King
  3. Welcome to Last Chance by Hope Ramsay
  4. Still Life With Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen
  5. the Secret Keeper by Kate Morton
Cheboludo · 01/08/2014 22:01
  1. Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little

I'd heard lots of rave reviews for this one but, for once, it lived up to the hype. A modern whodunnit with a tabloid friendly convicted (then pardoned) killer / heroine, this is funny and intriguing. It's tagged as Gone Girl meets Mean Girls but I think it's better than Gone Girl because it gets the 3rd act right. Highly recommended.

Trying to figure out what to go for next - I've started several but none are really grabbing me.

Provencalroseparadox · 02/08/2014 06:51

Just downloaded my holiday reading.
Am taking:

Flash Boys by Michael Lewis
Silkworm by Robert Galbraith
Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene
The Underground Man by Mick Jackson
Lexicon by Max Barry
The Various Haunts of Men by Susan Hill

Clearly some of this has been influenced by this thread. Pondering whether to take Her and/or Moneyball as well.

Sonnet · 02/08/2014 21:03

Just finished book 53 - We Are Completely Beside Ourselves'. Mumslife - I really enjoyed it!! I deliberately avoided all reviews so whilst I knew their was a twist on page 77 I was totally unaware what it was. I have The Silkworm on my kindle so have avoided all reviews including the comments on this thread Smile

book 54 is one that has been on my kindle a while - Blacklands by Belinda Bauer

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/08/2014 21:05

Book 79 - an Agatha Christie, 'After the Funeral' which I enjoyed.

I know what you mean remus, am finding it impossible to settle on a book at mo, keep flitting about, a few pages of this, a few of that. Can't seem to commit!

BestIsWest · 03/08/2014 08:41
  1. Caitlin Moran Moranthology
  2. Tina Fey's autobiography These were DDs recommendations and try were both OK.
ShanghaiDiva · 03/08/2014 09:37

Bit late to the party, but have just finished number 56- Sibel hodge's look behind you which was incredibly predictable, really disappointing.
Some of my favourites from the 56:

Life after life
The shock of the fall
Until you're mine
Marriage material
We were liars

Disappointed with:
Silkworm
The telling error
Before you die

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/08/2014 11:09

Book 80: another Agatha Christie, "Hickory, Dickory, Dock." This was the most blatantly racist one of hers I've ever read - jaw dropping stereotyping. Also, the title had absolutely nothing to do with the story, which really annoyed me. Some of the characters were interesting, but overall I really didn't like this.

Iamblossom · 03/08/2014 11:25
  1. Darkside, Belinda Bauer. Really enjoyed it. Good twist at the end and laugh out loud funny due to DCI Marvel.

Last in the trilogy Finders Keepers is next.

WednesdayNext · 03/08/2014 15:02
  1. Jeremy Coller "Splendidly Unreasonable Inventors" Interesting read.

  2. Iain Banks "The Quarry". I loved this.
