Dh's birthday is coming up and I'm wondering about getting him some books by some new authors he hasn't tried.

He only really reads crime and he's pretty much read everything by Harlan Coben, Lee Child, Jo Nesbo, Tess Gerritsen, Michael Connelly...

He doesn't like books that are set in the UK Hmm.

Any ideas welcomed!

I like Harlan Coben, Jo Nesbo and Lee Child also. Some of my favourites that are not set in England would be John Connolly, James Lee Burke, Denis Lehane and Tana French. If he hasn't read John Connolly Every Dead Thing would be a good present. It's the first in a very addictive series. Also did someone mention Linwood Barclay? Quite a similar style to Harlan Coben.

Nicola Upson.

James Lee Burke writes fantastic books set in New Orleans. "The Tin Roof blow down" is a crime novel set in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. It comes highly recommended.

Oh yes, I second the Camilleri books. Absolutely fantastic!

Cocolepew · 29/05/2014 19:32

James Lee Burkes daughter, Alafair, writes crime books, set in NYC.

LeBearPolar · 29/05/2014 19:44

Jonathan Kellerman, Faye Kellerman, Karin Slaughter, John Sandford, Jeffrey Deaver are my go-to US crime writers. And I love crime fiction!

I know he doesn't like the UK ones but Mark Billingham's Tom Thorne novels are v. good.

Another UK series is the Logan Macrae series by Stuart Macbride, they're set in Aberdeen and are fab.

JazzTheDog · 29/05/2014 19:49

Also I really enjoy C J Box's Joe Pickett series, set in Wyoming with a game warden in the role of 'detective'.

Lisa See has done a couple of crime fiction novels, I really enjoyed them. They're all set in China. The titles are Flower Net, The Interior and Dragon Bones.

FiveExclamations · 29/05/2014 19:54

I've quite enjoyed a couple of novels by Frank Tallis, they're based in Vienna around the time of Freud.

ladymalfoy · 29/05/2014 19:55

Arianna Franklin
Ellis Peters
Simon Brett

I luffs my crime fiction.

ladymalfoy · 29/05/2014 19:56

I am Pilgrim. Almost finished it.

skinmysunshine · 29/05/2014 20:18

Pierre Lemaitre.

He only has 2 books translated into English at the moment (he's French) but they are amazing. The first is Irene and the second is Alex. It's a while since I've been as blown away by any books of any genre.

They are a bit gruesome but truly wonderful.

Cocolepew · 29/05/2014 20:37

The Prey series, would be better to read in order, its not essential though.
Robert Crais for the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books .

RoadRunner123 · 29/05/2014 20:52

These are great - thanks so much everyone. I think I might print this out and give it to him as a little extra present to keep for future reference!

I just thought I'd throw this in the mix, since it's a name I'm not seeing. I haven't read Edna Buchanan's fiction, but I've enjoyed her nonfiction, from her years when she was a reporter in Florida, and won a Pulitzer prize.

Was the code one by Robert Harris?

DrewsWife · 30/05/2014 09:40

kris Kuzneski
James Rollins
Karin Slaughter

those are my all time favourite books

RoadRunner123 · 30/05/2014 09:46

Thanks again for the latest ones!

No, the 'coding' one was Agent Zigzag. I don't think it's actually about coding, but I remembered its name in the end!

Dennis Lehane and Tana French are two of my favourites.

If he's break his no-UK rule, Stuart MacBride is terrific. Mo Hayder if he wants to really scare himself.

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 30/05/2014 09:55

Ah, ok! "The Ghost" by Robert Harris is a thriller set partly in the US.

MabelSideswipe · 30/05/2014 09:59

Agree Tana French - very good.

For something different recommend Forty Days Without Shadow by Oliver Truc. Its a thriller based in Lapland's reindeer police. It is really dark but loads of interesting details about the life there. Scandi but very different to anything I have read from there before.

SaltyandSweet · 30/05/2014 10:05

JD Robb's "In Death" series with Lt Eve Dallas. So many books and very addictive!

Bithurt · 31/05/2014 12:27

Skinmysunshine, I have just bought both the books! Do you think it's better to read Irene first?
