CHILDREN'S books you've enjoyed as an ADULT

Looking for something nice to read that won't take up too much time or mental energy.

Has anyone read any children's books, as an adult, that they have really liked and would recommend?

I personally have read a book called Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. This is aimed at young teens. It's a very sweet little novel about the afterlife (It' s not a religious book), and I found it very comforting whilst grieving.

So, what are your suggestions?

I mentioned the Wardstone Chronicles ( The spooks apprentice) series earlier in the thread. I'm going to go slightly off topic but there is a film coming out that is loosely (and I mean very loosely) based on the books.

I won't be watching it as from what I can gather, it doesn't do the books justice. Angry

my point is that the books are excellent Smile

I adore childrens/YA books.

Lots of classics already mentioned but there are many great contemporary writers. I think this is a golden age of children's literature.

Meg Rosoff - How I Live Now, What I Was (all her books actually, she's a genius)
Mary Hooper - At The House of the Magician series (Tudor set) and her series set during the plague, Great Fire of London
Sally Gardner - I, Coriander, The Red Necklace. Gripping historical dramas with a little bit of magic.
Kate Saunders - Beswitched. A funny and moving tribute to the classic boarding school tales
Roddy Doyle - Greyhound of a Girl. A moving and beautifully written story about mothers and daughters.
Michael Morpurgo - Private Peaceful. A stunning story about a rural childhood and two brothers who go off to war. I blubbed like a baby.
Patrick Ness - The Knife of Never Letting Go.

There's loads of books on here that I can't wait to read, so thanks a lot everyone. I am making a start with Charlotte Sometimes, as it seems to be quite a popular choice.

This thread makes me want to go to my parents' house and find where they have hidden my old books...

I have William books, Monica Edwards, and Diana Wynne Jones on my list of things I have never stopped reading. Read Harry Potter as an adult too.

Donki · 03/02/2014 14:46

I second the Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett. I am just discovering them with the Young Donki, and they are excellent. Funny, well written and thoughtful.

Also
Citizen of the Galaxy, Starman Jones, and Have Space Suite - will travel.(Heinlein)

Plus loads that have had multiple mentions up-thread.
The Dark is Rising is one of my favourite books ever...

I'm currently reading and enjoying the "Henderson boys" series by Robert Muchamore, a set of stories about teenage espionage agents in WW2 France. All the fun of a grown up war thriller but in shorter books with less sex.

Donki · 03/02/2014 17:48

That sound fun UniS.

FobblyWoof · 03/02/2014 18:27

I've just finished if "If You Find Me" by Emily Murdoch.

Very good, if a little predictable

UniS · 03/02/2014 18:55

They are donki, note that its less sex rather than no sex and rather a lot of violence, and killing. I'll not be introducing these to the boy till he is a little older - like secondary school age .

Donki · 03/02/2014 23:42

UniS Mmmmm, yes, wasn't thinking of giving them to the YD just yet...

basgetti · 03/02/2014 23:49

Cora Ravenwing by Gina Wilson. I loved this book but it was so sad.

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 03/02/2014 23:58

Joan Lingard's Kevin and Sadie books.

Also, at the risk of outing myself as a bit of a loser, I have a huge collection of Judy Blume, Paula Danziger and Sweet Valley High/Twins books that I like to read occasionally Blush Grin

MrsSteptoe · 04/02/2014 00:00

Pig Heart Boy, malorie blackman.

Have just read an AMAZING book called Wonder by R J Palacio.

frenchfancy · 04/02/2014 08:27

Such a good thread with loads of ideas.

i love the Eva Ibottson books - Dragonfly Pool is my Favourite

I also liked One Dollar Horse by Lauren St John

I think we should get this thread moved to fiction so we don't lose all these great ideas.

ChurchStretton · 04/02/2014 09:11

The Lone Pine series by Malcolm Saville are (mainly) excellent providing you buy the full version rather than the abbreviated. They can be read and enjoyed at many different levels.

About half of the 20? books are set in Shropshire where I live.

hells456 · 08/02/2014 02:20

I love a lot of the books already mentioned. I also enjoyed Flowers in the Attic and at the moment I keep sneakily reading the Cherub books my daughter keeps leaving in the bathroom. Not fiction, but the Horrible History/geography/science books are fun.

morchoxplz · 09/02/2014 21:01

Private Peaceful made me AND my husband cry. A brilliant book.

PeasandCucumbers · 10/02/2014 19:10

Wonder, I thought it was amazing, the only book I have ever finished in 24 hours. I lent it to my MIL who lives in Ireland and have thought many times since that that was a bad move as I will probably not get it back and therefore end up buying another copy so I can rea it to the children

Gaige · 20/02/2014 17:21

Malorie Blackmans Noughts and Crosses series and The fault in our stars which had me sobbing by the end. I can't remember the authors name though

JellySnakesLadderedTights · 25/02/2014 22:18

I finished reading Charlotte Sometimes today. I really liked it, so thanks for the recommendation. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it yet, I do sort of wish it had ended differently though.

I'm not sure what to read next, with so much choice out there.
