Looking for something nice to read that won't take up too much time or mental energy.

Has anyone read any children's books, as an adult, that they have really liked and would recommend?

I personally have read a book called Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. This is aimed at young teens. It's a very sweet little novel about the afterlife (It' s not a religious book), and I found it very comforting whilst grieving.

So, what are your suggestions?

Loved Neil Gaiman.

Pompoko · 30/01/2014 18:48

Zom-b by darren shan is brilliant. All of his books are great, i started reading them in high school.

Hadmeathello · 30/01/2014 18:48

yy to most of these, in particular harry potter, hunger games, goodnight mr tom and Eva ibbotson.

Would also recommend the Chaos Walking trilogy, Siobhan Dowd & Kevin Brooks.

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 30/01/2014 18:50

Neil Gaiman - Neverwhere and Ocean at the end of the lane as well as the Graveyard Book...actually just read all his stuff.

Then move onto Ben Aaranovich's Peter Grant series

superbagpuss · 30/01/2014 18:51

James patterson. Maximum ride: the angel experiment. Think there are 4 books in total.

Didn't realise it was teen book when I got it out of the library, but then enjoyed the whole series. Will get for ds when he's a bit older.

ariadneoliver · 30/01/2014 18:52

I enjoyed the Dark is Rising series, I couldn't get on with Harry Potter though.

popsgran · 30/01/2014 18:54

Howl's Moving Castle- I was at uni suffering from a dreadful cold when I first read it. My roommate told me it would make me feel better-it did.

or any other diana wynne jones. agree about Anne of Green Gables books entirely.

Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer.
It astonished me when I'd finished reading that this novel was created and meant for children. I've known children, and perhaps was myself, capable of understanding this novel and appreciating it, but I would venture that it is hardly the norm.

The identity crisis and the challenges involved in this story line are intricate and carefully laid out. I never thought of it as a time-travel book. It's not about time travel at all. It's about knowing who you are, wherever you are, in whatever circumstances you might find yourself. I found it charming, thought provoking, and absolutely beautiful.

I would recommend this gem to just about anyone with a sense of adventure and a self-discovering mindset.

Zara by Joyce Stranger
SUMMARY: Richard Proud coveted the golden-brown mare from the moment he saw her. Although he couldn't afford Zara he bought her nevertheless, to breed him winners - foals that would restore the fortunes of the Yorkshire stud where he bred and trained racehorses.
Intelligent adult novel about the horse racing and breeding world, but also about families and relationships.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland great recommendation. I had friends who lived in a flat in Norham Gardens.

The Owl Service by Alan Garner. Mythology and class sensibilities plus teenage sexual tension. Excellent book.

Both books would have been wasted on my teenage self.

Isabelonatricycle · 30/01/2014 18:59

Michael Morpurgo, Biggles, Chalet School, lots of others I can't think of at the moment...

WreckTangle · 30/01/2014 19:00

I've just moved house and found all my Point Horror books, can't wait to give them another read.

HopeClearwater · 30/01/2014 19:00

Watership Down is most definitely a book for adults. Just because it's got bunnies in it, people think it's for children.

foslady · 30/01/2014 19:00

Nurse Matilda! Brilliant read and have just bought another copy which I said was for dd but she can take her mitts off it . Despite it being the book Nanny McPhee was based on it's NOTHING like the film, it's much much better!

Isabelonatricycle · 30/01/2014 19:00

Ooh, Little Lord Fauntleroy, the Railway Children. Need to leave this thread now before I spend all of this year hunting down books to re-read.

nouvellevag · 30/01/2014 19:01

Definitely Diana Wynne Jones, she was bloody brilliant.

spiderlight · 30/01/2014 19:07

Neil Gaiman, Phillip Pullman, Michael Morpurgo. I re-read all the Patricia Leitch 'Jinny at Finmory' horse books recently and loved them just as much as when I was a kid. I also read The Moomins to my bump when I was pregnant :o

Sunday I read Charlotte Sometimes as The Cure did a song after the book, can't remember it in the detail you have given but do remember enjoying it. First time I've read a book of the back of a pop song!
