Are there any fans out there in the erudite world of Mumsnet Bookclub?

I know the critics view his books as formulaic and of no critical value but I love his work and imo, an author who can transport me into another world with engrossing stories, is very talented. I find his dry wit, pithy delivery and sardonic undertones humorous and once I immerse myself into one of his novels, I find it difficult to put down. DH loves him too and we are on a mission to read all his books (I've read about 8 so far).

I've just finished reading The Broker and it was superb. As the drama unfolded, my heart was racing as I was cheering on the anti-hero. A thoroughly enjoyable and absorbing read. Despite that, I think my favourite book is between The Street Lawyer (I finished that in one day when I was on holiday) and The Partner. I know you might find this strange but I found the ending in the Partner so sad and so unexpected that it played on my mind for daysBlush. Again, I felt so sorry for the anti-hero.

Anyway, which is your favourite Grisham book?

Yes, The Broker is set in Bologna and because of JG's vivid description of the city, particularly the historical buildings and cafe lifestyle, I really want to visit it.

DH has just finished reading A Time to Kill and he said that it was fabulous. I was planning to read The Chamber next but I've decided to give Moby Dick a go. Completely different in everywayGrin

Ive read them all, theyre nice easy books to read.

You know the formula, pretty much can guess what will happen next

Jeffrey Deaver is the same

WelshBoris · 06/06/2006 09:14

My favourite is the pelican brief

speedymama · 06/06/2006 09:21

I enjoyed the Brethren too.

Has anyone read The Painted House. It is not like his other books and tells the story of one summer in the life of a 7yo growing up on a share cropper farm. It meanders along gently with the occasional injection of action and drama. I found the narrative of life in 1950s Arkansas quite intriguing and I kept wondering, if that is what is was like for the poor white folk, it must have been a thousand times harsher for black people. A fascinating and insightful read.

the painted house is semi autobiographical i think

about the family of workers who come to his house

speedymama · 06/06/2006 09:24

WB, I really enjoyed the Pelican Brief too and I think using Denzil Washington in the film was an inspired choiceSmile. The book really races along and I'm so thankful that I have a strong heart. I don't know how I would cope otherwiseGrin

Ahh, thanks for that WB (re painted house). If that is the case, he really has come a long way and done very well for himself. I wonder if the Hank and Cowboy incident really happened?

Love John Grisham's, though disappointed by Painted House.

Broker and Brethen excellent.

My library keeps a record of what you read - it classes me as a reader of revenge novels - not sure what this really says about me.

Has anyone read Shadow in the wind or Rule of Four? Excellent.

Any other readers of Wilbur Smith out there?

saltire · 06/06/2006 18:43

I have actually just realised that I have read another of his book - Skipping Christmas, which is what the film, Christmas with the Kranks was based on. I've never seen the film, but i read the book last year. Its ok

speedy1 · 06/09/2006 22:16

my fave is a time to kill too. he has a new book coming out soon its called an innocent man. its John Grisham?s first work of nonfiction about a guy called Ron Williamson. due out on October 10,

fistfullofnappies · 06/09/2006 22:37

Sorry, but Ive completely gone off JG since I read his last book.

Dodgy arms dealer gets fantastic and lethal secret weapon that's been nicked from the Chinese...tries to sell it to highest bidder...ends up having secret services from several countries plus assorted thugs messing him around...decides to do the decent thing.

Now pause for a minute. What is the decent thing here?
would it be, to return the stolen object to its rightful owners, the Chinese government? er, no
would it be to destroy the stolen secret weapon, for the good of humanity? no again.

In Mr John Grisham's book, the right thing to do is to hand the secret weapon over to that bunch of nutters occupying the White House!
no, he's on my Jeffrey Archer list of authors now. Thats the ones where the bad guys win.
