Any recommendations? Need lots of books for hols. I want lit fiction eg I do not want Khaled Hossein, Harold Fry, JoJo Moyes etc etc (nothing wrong with them, but I don't want them).

I want Mantel/Mitchell/Houllebecq type stuff please and thank you.

Three men.....the tent erecting scene...oh dear God. Have a cylinder of oxygen at the ready.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 28/06/2013 14:59

Hully, I agree with you about Anne Tyler, but even her not-so-great is better than many writers' best.

"Three Men on a Bummel" the sequel to "three men in a boat" is free on Kindle. It's worth getting it for the dog incident alone.

The thing about Anita, the comforting thing, is that every book is exactly the same.

TheRealFellatio · 28/06/2013 15:07

Why suspicious?

SconeRhymesWithGone · 28/06/2013 15:11

Hully, my favorite Rose Tremain is Restoration; I am a history geek and Tudor-Stuart is my period. I also think the film of Restoration could be in the running for a most-faithful-to-the-book adaptation award, right up there with To Kill a Mockingbird.

TheRealFellatio · 28/06/2013 15:14

OK, in the free list what about Riki Tiki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling?

'This is the story of a boy and his weasel, a bird and a snake, India and the British Empire. Rudyard Kipling's dramatic tale, here excerpted from the greater volume of The Jungle Book, is the story of the loyal mongoose, Rikk-Tikki-Tavi, and the lengths to which he must go to protect his adoptive human family.'

Hullygully · 28/06/2013 15:18

suspicious - I don't know, I don't like the cut of its jib

is it good then?

Restoration v gd too
