My DH and friends giggle at me but I love her books. Chocolate, sofa snuggles and one of her books and I am a happy lady Smile
Am I the only one?

I read them years ago, my mum was a big fan so had the whole lot. I really need to read them again, anyone know of any cheap boxsets?

somewherewest · 15/06/2013 21:14

My fortysomething aunt loves them too. Not my thing but I can imagine them being a relaxing light read if murder mysteries are your thing.

More importantly, how come the TV series Poirot lived in England for years and spoke fluent English, but still got really basic things like definite/indefinite articles wrong? Seriously? Was it to keep reminding the viewer that he was 'forrin'?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 15/06/2013 21:14

Gosh no, I love her. Smile

Pancakeflipper · 15/06/2013 21:16

I love her too. And some how I often forget why the crime occurred so I get to re-read them.

My grandma had carrier bags full of her books in a wardrobe and when I was in my teens I would borrow them.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 15/06/2013 21:17

I just finished 'A Pocket Full of Rye'. Bliss. Total brain comfort.

DorisShutt · 15/06/2013 21:26

Is it just me or was it a more innocent time then?

Back doors left ajar, vicars on bicycles and brazen hussies!

I think it's the era I'd like to visit - complete with afternoon tea at the Savoy or Ritz in a lovely hat!

Plomino · 15/06/2013 21:26

Oh I adore them . I actually collect her first editions when I've got a bit of spare money , and have about 5 copies of each because I read them till they fall apart .

Ask me which one was my favourite and I'd be really stuck though .

Plomino · 15/06/2013 21:28

Oh Doris I agree . I'm convinced I was born in the wrong era , and that my rightful place in time is about the 1930's .

HelgatheHairy · 15/06/2013 21:29

Doris thank you for that list of writers similar to Agatha Christie. Going to be busy on Amazon soon!

baby I like Agatha Raisin too. I only started reading them as my mother got the first book and liked it so it turned into an easy present to buy her one or two and I ended up reading them myself. I've actually got two out of the library but need to read them myself first before giving them to her!

Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher both should be questioned very closely I think!

Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters is quite good too. Set in Egypt on archaeology sites.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 15/06/2013 21:31

Yup. Born old I was.

MrsWilliamBodie · 15/06/2013 21:32

I love them. I want to be Miss Marple when I grow up.

I wish more Parker Pyne and Harley Quin stories had been written.

MorvahRising · 15/06/2013 21:36

Love them. Also Sayers, Allingham and Marsh. Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayers is one of my favourites.

HelgatheHairy I'm another Amelia Peabody fan! Apart from my family I've never found anyone else who is so am rather excited. The books are great light reading, but you also learn a lot about Egyptology. I keep thinking I need to buy a parasol. So many uses in everyday life.

LondonJax · 15/06/2013 21:43

I love Agatha! Hope they don't make a pig's ear of the new Marple tomorrow. Anyone seen The Mousetrap? Excellent.

MrsHerculePoirot · 15/06/2013 21:46

Love them (can you tell?! Grin)

I have reread all Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence and am on the last Marple... Then going to reread all the others! Don't know what I am going to read after that though!!!

HelgatheHairy · 15/06/2013 21:46

morvah I suspect we're a small bunch! I love Egyptology and really wish I could go to Egypt in those days! And I think a parasol is a great idea!

DorisShutt · 15/06/2013 21:46

Marple? Tomorrow?

MrsHerculePoirot · 15/06/2013 21:47

I loved Mousetrap, saw it about 15 years ago, would love to go again one day!

HelgatheHairy · 15/06/2013 21:49

doris ITV at 8. There was a new Poirot last week.

TheCameliousHumph · 15/06/2013 21:50

Me too.

I have loads and 30 duplicates but can't bare to part with any Blush.

High time I had an Agatha phase again.

Greydog · 15/06/2013 21:51

Another fan here! Love the books, and also enjoy the Hercule Poirot series on the TV. It's all so genteel (unless you're the murder victim!)

SouthernerinMCR · 15/06/2013 21:54

I love Agatha Christie and read all of the Poirot and Marple books years ago but now I tend to listen to the Radio 4 dramatisations whenever I need a 'Fix'. They work really well as radio plays. I like the TV and film adaptations too - although some more than others.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/06/2013 21:59

I am the world's biggest AC fan, or close to it! Grin

I own all of her books, including the Mary Westmacott and non-fiction ones, auto- and biographies, those "bedside companion" type of books, etc.

I've also been to lots of places, all by accident! Couple years ago I was at a conference in Harrogate and one of the dinners was at the Swan hotel which is where she disappeared to that time. Couple of weeks ago I was at another conference, this time in Torquay, staying at the Grand Hotel which is where she and Archie honeymooned.

But my favourite one...

Before we were engaged DH and I went on a Nile cruise holiday and the tour we were on stopped in Aswan. When I realised that was where she had written Death on the Nile I was v excited. DH disappeared with his phone for a few minutes, then came back and told me what he had done. We were leaving the cruise for a night to stay in the Old Cataract Hotel, the very room she had stayed in for several months one winter writing the book!!!!

LondonJax · 15/06/2013 22:00

DH bought me a huge 'guide' type book of Agatha for. It's got synopses of all the stories and plays without giving anything away - which is genius in itself, along with all the characters. So if you wanted to know who Hastings was married to or his children's names as well as who's played him, it's all in there. Marvellous!

Oh and some of the Agatha Raisin stories mentioned on here have been made into radio plays with Penelope Keith as AR. Radio 4 extra have them so you may find them on IPlayer, depending on when they were last aired, along with Hercule Poirot (played by John Moffat) and Miss Marple (played by June Whitfield) - all very good.
