At Christmas he loved the Man on the Moon and Rumble in the Jungle. We've looked at most of the ones on the Mumsnet recommended list (but I find I get more unusual recommendations on this thread - like the 2 books above!). Any suggestions of books that your son has loved at this age? Was also planning to get a Where's Wally book.

DS really enjoyed poetry books at this age (still does)- Night Night Knight (ed Michael Rosen), Wriggle and Roar (Nick Sharrat), and we have a lovely anthology edited by Grace Nichols and Jon Agard, I think.

Don't get the where wally book - very hard. Usborne (I think) does a 1001 things to spot series - fairues, bugs, underwater, castles, history - loads ..they are all fab!

DS loved all the gruffalo series and the little red train ones at that age. Little red train preferable to Thomas IMO. Also liked Harry and the dinasours although I am not so keen. Little Duck on the Moon. Hmm not sure if that is the name - will have to sneak into his bedroom.

Yes I got it right and it is by Michael Burgess.

These sound great. Very exciting (how sad am I?). How many books do you get your kids for b'days/Xmas? I find myself buying loads although I do spread them out, take them away when they've been overdone and then reintroduce them but maybe I should just buy one or two really good ones? I also really need to get on that website Kaz suggested. Would be much cheaper than Amazon.

What about Alfie... or Burglar Bill?

Clary · 23/05/2006 01:03

Was thinking about this and of course, Gruffalo, Gruffalo's Child and Room on the Broom if you don't have them.
Agree Fred the Firefighter not the best piece of writing but for some reason it appeals to DS2.
We also like Kipper, eg Kipper's Beach Ball, Kipper's Birthday etc.
If you get Richard Scarry go for Amazon, my local Waterstone's said it was out of print but Amazon had it and it was £5 off too!

All the Julia Donaldson ones and Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaur Rumpus is also great!

My ds loves Dirty Bertie atm.

If you are always buying books why not become an Usborne organiser? You get £150 of books for £38 at the moment. There is no obligation to sell anything but big discounts/commission if you do. You dont have any targets or anything. Its great! Contact me and I will send you some more information. [email protected]

The Book People are doing a selection for that age group \link{http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/paperCatalogPage_10001_10051_100_18751_26097_5\here} plus the Gruffalo books and other Julia Donaldson \link{http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/paperCatalogPage_10001_10051_100_18751_26094_3\here}

there are some sites with children's recommended book lists that you could try eg www.readingzone.com, www.bookswelove.co.uk, www.wordpool.co.uk, www.booktrusted.co.uk

Ds1 has just turned 3 and Dig Dig Digging is his absolute favourite - he'd have it every night if i didn't keep hiding it! Although he makes up for it by reciting it to himself word for word!
