recommendations for books for 3 year old boy's birthday please

At Christmas he loved the Man on the Moon and Rumble in the Jungle. We've looked at most of the ones on the Mumsnet recommended list (but I find I get more unusual recommendations on this thread - like the 2 books above!). Any suggestions of books that your son has loved at this age? Was also planning to get a Where's Wally book.

our son loves the Thomas word book from M&S, drives us nuts as we read it most nights. But it amazes me how much they take in at bedtime.

Yes, hate the mole book.

Custard on your cornflakes and rocket countdown by Nick Sharratt also went down well.

Anything by Doctor Seuss, all rhymes so they can guess whats coming. There is a great bedtime story book.

ok, going with:

  • reluctantly, the digging book (not being grudging about your choice, just wondering whether to dig my heels in over the amount of mechanical literature we have). That means no Thomas or little red train even though I know he would love them (but I have to read them so surely I have a say or am I harming him psychologically by denying him these mechanical outlets?),

  • Billy's bucket sounds really nice and anything that suggests parents are in the wrong and are being stupid will go down a storm at the moment; and lastly

  • something smelly? Perhaps not the poo book. He's already way too interested and is getting plenty of entertainment anyway commenting on his newborn sister's poos. Or Custard on your Cornflakes?

Would like another Dr Seuss but can't find an age appropriate one. He loved Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Wocket in your Pocket, Marvin K Mooney but the rest seem to jump to a much older readership? Any suggestions by name, Secondhand Rose?

Noooo dig dig digging too young for a 3yo (IMHO)
ALl my 3 have been mad about it but I rarely read it now even to DS2 (3) - more of a 18mo-2.5 yr book.
DS2 really loves Richard Scarry's What do People Do all day and an Usborne book called Fred the Firefighter.

No!! Little red train fab. Loads of lovely detailed pictures, my ds would pore over for ages and great to read aloud.

ok, maybe jam sandwich one. but not digger. have 2 little red train books. could either go with another in the series or one of clary's 2 suggestions. will hang on and see if anymore votes come in :). this is really helpful - much appreciated.

sorry, i'm not secondhandrose (!) but i love the sneetches by dr seuss - along the same lines as the ones you mentioned. my copy is the sneetches and other stories but i've leant it out and can't remember all the other stories - i know there's too many daves (challenge you to read 'soogy muff' without sniggering!) and one about 'pants' (have to explain americanism) that are alive and seem scary but are really kind.

Do you use the book people to buy kids books - they have some great deals, totally bargain kids books.

Oh yes of course - the gruffalo, smartest giant in town, the gruffalos child, room on a broom.
The book people were selling a whole pack for £10. Classic stories.
