We all loved the last choice, Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.

The Maggie O'Farrell (Instructions for a Heatwave) would be just the sort of thing but it's not in pb yet. We're all old-fashioned diehards, we don't do kindle and stuff.

I'm just stuck.

how about This is How You Lose Her, by Junot Diaz?

LittleFeileFooFoo · 05/04/2013 23:28

Its got bad words in it, though...

MrsBungle · 05/04/2013 23:29

I've just finished Harold Fry.

Have you done the 100 year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared?

GrimbleGrog · 05/04/2013 23:33

Bad words? D'you mean swearing?

ninjanurse · 05/04/2013 23:33

what about The Light between Oceans by M L Stedman? Fantastic book with lots of discussion potential.

LittleFeileFooFoo · 05/04/2013 23:34

oh yes, there's sex and stuff too. But very good!

CatsCantFlyFast · 05/04/2013 23:34

Sorry, personal opinion and not helpful but I hated the 100 year old man with a passion

GrimbleGrog · 05/04/2013 23:34

I quite like the look of 100yo man, mrsbungle, but it appears the plot is a bit along the lines of Harold Fry? Bit too similar maybe?

OP posts:
MrsBungle · 05/04/2013 23:38

Hmm. Same ilk, I would say but not similar really. There is a lot more to the 100 year old man story. I much preferred it to Harold Fry, personally.

MrsBungle · 05/04/2013 23:39

I have seen a few people on here say they didn't like 100 year old man. Seems to be one of those that you love or hate - probably perfect for a book club I am not the author

GrimbleGrog · 05/04/2013 23:48

The Snow Child? Any good?

OP posts:
WillieWaggledagger · 05/04/2013 23:52

snow child was ok, lovely writing

i'm reading 'a woman in berlin' at the moment, and just finished 'the morville hours' (neither strictly fiction though)

racingheart · 06/04/2013 00:03

I was going to suggest The Light Between Oceans too. It's beautifully written and easy to read, with loads of juicy things to discuss about moral dilemmas and right and wrong.

Little Eile, I love Junot Diaz's short stories but haven't read his novels. Thanks for the recommendation.

MrsBungle · 06/04/2013 00:07

Another suggestion is The Lighthouse by Alison Moore. I quite enjoyed that and she was shortlisted for the Brooker prize and my dd does swimming lessons with her ds

DuchessofMalfi · 06/04/2013 07:56

How about The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan? I read it last year and thought it was a gripping page turner. It's available in paperback.

AViewFromTheFridge · 06/04/2013 08:10

The Casual Vacancy? Or would second The Snow Child - beautifully written.

ChippyMinton · 06/04/2013 08:21

Your group sounds a bit like mine. We have Harold Fry and the 100 yo man on our upcoming list. Some of our favourites:

Still Alice by Lisa Genova
The Long Song by Andrea Levy
Pure by Andrew Miller
The Ice Cream Girls by Dorothy Koomson
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell
Bel Canto by Anne Patchet

BTW, we order reading group sets from our library, so it just costs the £2 reservation fee (that's for all the copies, not each). Might be worth checking that out.

GrimbleGrog · 06/04/2013 08:44

Chippy, the Esme Lennox one...perfect.

Thanks all! Smile

Oh my word, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox is a superb book.

Thanks so much Chippy.

ChippyMinton · 18/04/2013 15:47

Phew, glad you liked it!

Shanghaidiva · 18/04/2013 15:56

Vanishing Act is great.
In case you need some more recommendations (these are from my books club)

  • Mao's Last Dancer
  • The Casual Vacancy
  • The Glass Castle
  • The Dovekeepers - this is our April read
- 100 year old man - Little Bee - Hotel at the corner of bitter and sweet
petal2008 · 18/04/2013 16:21

The Legacy by Katherine Webb - superb

TillyBookClub · 18/04/2013 21:00

You could take a look at our author chats and bookclub choices from 2012 and 2013 - we only do PBs, and we did Harold Fry in January including great chat with Rachel Joyce

We've got Maggie O'Farrell coming in October (when Heatwave in PB) so do join us then.

Hope it helps...

mimbleandlittlemy · 19/04/2013 14:32

Instructions for a Heatwave is currently £4.99 for the hardback with The Book People. I just ordered 8 copies for our book club and as the order came to over £30 didn't have to pay postage either. Ordered Tuesday, arrived yesterday, distributed round playground this morning!
