How many books are in your to read pile - confess here

Today I decided to count how many books are on my 'to read' shelf/in a pile next to my bed/ hidden in the wardrobe. I own a staggering 131 books that I have not yet read Blush. Even at the rather optimistic rate of 50 books a year that is almost 3 years of reading and this does not include all the unread books on my kindle.

So come on everybody fess up how many books do you have waiting to be read and repeat after me:
I must not buy any more books
I must not go to the library
I must not borrow books from my mum/sisters/friends
I must must must tackle my to-read pile Grin

I'm scared to count. But it looks like well over 131. And I accidentally on purpose went into Waterstones today (after borrowing 5 books from the library) and was tempted into buying 3 more.

I'm starting to think that I've got a problem Sad Blush

Well at a quick glance I have
17 by my bed
3 in my work bag
2 on the stairs
132 on my kindle
I have more downstairs but can't be bothered to leave the gin and chocolate to go and count them. At any rate far too many to keep up with and I do like a new book!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/01/2013 22:03

100 on the kindle
40ish by the bed

EstoyAqui · 12/01/2013 22:06

86 on my kindle and I guess another 200+ on the bookshelves in the spare room. Blush

poocatcherchampion · 12/01/2013 22:08

Oh my! I've got about a dozen and that's the most I've ever had. I'm speeding through them as reading books in my NY resolution.

Myliferocks · 12/01/2013 22:09

I have 28 books on my to read list on my Kindle.
I also have £40 of Amazon vouchers waiting to be spent.
I'm trying to get my to read list down before I buy some more books.
There's not enough hours in the day to read as much as I would like!

EstoyAqui · 12/01/2013 22:11

I just remembered the OU course books that arrived in the post this weekend. That's another 12 in a pile! I have a very busy year ahead.

Worksitoutwithapencil · 12/01/2013 22:26

I feel better already. I knew I wasn't the only person to buy books quicker than I can read them.

Oooooooh
dangerous question.

I went upstairs to try to start working through my proofs box.
Bloody dd means i never get a chance to read. And then i wonder why i can't recommend books that are less than 18months old...

Anyway, 4 whole boxes each with about 20 books in.
And that doesn't include the pike 8 that are on my desk, the shelf of about 15/16 books under the desk and the beautiful entire series of hot key proofs i brought home (another 8)
And the steam street series i bought for dd and intend to read first. (13)

nickelbabe · 12/01/2013 22:31

Scream street

nickelbabe · 12/01/2013 22:33

Can i please implore you never to utter that phrase "i must not buy any more books"
every time you do, a bookseller dies

nickelbabe · 12/01/2013 22:35

I would also like to mention that i have about another thousand or so that are not on my "to read" pile.
Yet.
Sometimes you have to buy books just because.

Novia · 12/01/2013 22:35

Well over 200 - I'm compulsive! I read about 120 a year though! Grin

ExitPursuedByABear · 12/01/2013 22:36

Get you lot. I opened the thread to say that I had 15 by my bed, and Middlemarch, but see that I am seriously outbooked.

CoteDAzur · 12/01/2013 22:36

I'm struggling to understand how you can hoard over 100 unread books and keep getting more Shock

Maybe you like the feeling of collecting books (like stamps) rather than reading them?

ExitPursuedByABear · 12/01/2013 22:37

Plus the four I got for Christmas.

ninjanurse · 12/01/2013 22:44

I think I have 36 paperbacks on the book shelf
About 250 on my kindle.

Yesterday I got 6 more out of the library that I had reserved.

All the paperbacks I get are 2nd hand or passed onto me. People buy me kindle vouchers for christmas and birthday. I justify it by saying I dont have any other expensive hobbies and I dont go mad buying shoes or handbags like my sister.

Well, guilty as charged, but the culprit is my local charity shop that is very well served by the numerous book clubs in the area, so i can go in and buy the whole booker shortlist for a fiver, then a couple of classics that i don't have, take a punt on a few new authors, and my real weakness is non fiction, so i come out with as many as i can carry with the best of intentions. House looks like a second hand bookshop. I do send them back from whence they came though (sometimes).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/01/2013 23:22

One - am half way through and not liking it yet. I'm re-reading The Lord Of The Rings instead but have nothing waiting for me. :( HATE being bookless.

LetUsPrey · 12/01/2013 23:31

I feel a lot better after reading this thread. I've got about 11 or 12 books in a couple of piles around the bedroom waiting to be read. Add to that a couple more I'm definitely going to buy in the next week or two, and several others from the library when I can actually get there.

Instead of reading something new though, I've be re-reading all five of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy for the zillionth time.

GinOnTwoWheels · 13/01/2013 07:18

I've got about 150 unread books on my kindle, about 10-20 normal books that I still haven't read despite having for 3 years or more and about 120 books on my ereaderiq watch list that I will allow myself to buy if they come down to about £2 or less.

DuchessofMalfi · 13/01/2013 09:44

Way more than I can count :o - both paperback and kindle, and some hardbacks. I love reading, and read about 90 books last year.

Charity shops are my main downfall - there's too many in our town, all with lovely books at bargain prices. I must stop looking, and start trying to whittle down the piles of books I already own.

I went through my and DH's books last night, and gathered together five big bags of books we've read but don't want to keep. I only keep the ones I love and want to read again.

I'm feeling really outbooked now.

I have 6 1/2 to read. The first to read are listed here

Personally, it's because I keep seeing new ones that look interesting and that I want to read. And often in the moment I get overly optimistic about my ability to get through the giant piles of unread books that I have already. It's not a collecting thing. The only books I have are ones that I'm intending to read, or ones that I loved and think that I might want to read again. Plus a number of work-related technical ones that I need to keep hold of for reference purposes.

Every now and then I resolve to not enter shops trhat sell books, but I never manage to keep that up for long.
